When I stopped cutting hay in my hay field and mob grazed it, I ended up with heaps of red clover. I guess someone spread seed at some point before I purchased the land. Your right, that seed stays in the soil bank until it's got the right situation to grow.

The seed does last for decades I'm sure. Winter before this one we took out the overgrown maples that shaded my front yard and threatened the power lines. Never had clover in my yard, and it EXPLODED in white clover last summer. It was amazing. I could not have planted it so thick. Seedbank indeed!

GREG, i love them beaver! as long as they dont cause me to have to work, i used to do damage control work and them beaver can mow down a corn or bean as good as a machine can! they are also a danger to farmers when they under cut banks close to their feed stations,, tractors, atv`s, and live stock can get hurt that way and cause all kinds of trouble for farmers and ranchers,, great video

We spread red clover on at 25 to 40 pounds an acre here in Michigan. We like to burn off the old grass and lightly disk the ground if needed. We then spread on the seed and let the freeze thaw cycles work the seed in . Our cattle enjoy the nice feed and the pastures regenerate nicely. We spread rye and clover on as cover crops on our corn and soybean ground as well . We farm 8000 acres and raise 300 head of Hereford and Angus cattle and we cover crop about 75 percent of our fields during the winter. We notill soybeans into standing rye and we see a significant yield boost. When we plant corn we have to till the rye under to help with emergence. Soil health is very important and crop rotation is very crucial to build up topsoil. Take care and stay safe !

I have had a Herd seeder like that for about 25+ years and love it. That is one company and product that I brag on. I dont have mine that high up in the air though. I think you are gaining some spread width by doing that, is that the reason?

Getting the seeder higher in the air does give you a larger swath with each pass. It also keeps the seeder high enough that the mud and water is not thrown up on the seeder which prevents it from clogging up.

Nice pickup on the hay Greg, congrats! Hopefully the young man who owns it doesn't put it to beans but it's hard to talk someone out of something like that when they see a particular $ amount per acre. Unfortunately it's pretty hard to compete with crop land rental too. Hopefully he sees there's a larger value in keeping it to grass and helping the farm rather than hurting it.

There is probably plenty of seed in the field already. I used my compact tractor mounted rototiller to even out a dead furrow and had the nicest crop of red clover I've ever seen without doing anything else.. I would try something like that in 50 foot diameter test plots first all over the field. Maybe try some with deer food plots. Alfalfa may come back too. Try that for a year or two and then make a decision. You might try some 0-20-20 fertilizer on some plots..

I used to be a fertiliser and pesticide sampler for the South Carolina Dept. Of Fertiliser and Pesticide control. Used to anyway, 0-20-20 was considered a luxury because it was used mostly as fishpond fertiliser. As a result, it was pretty expensive because it was subject to luxury tax. So yes it's good for legumes, but you can do about the same with a mix of 0-46-0 and 0-0-60.

What about some "soil disturbance" prior to seeding? Not aggressive, just roughing up that matted grass. I have a similar plan to seed Crimson Clover, but I'll start with a dethacher or similar tool to expose some soil. Any thoughts?

Good day sir. I have a question about broadcasting legume seed. Would the inoculation of the seed hold up lying in the sun till germination happens and how does one protect cattle from bloating on red clover. Want to broadcast legumes on to my existing pasture but I'm afraid that I'll loose the nitrogen fixing ability if not drilled into the soil. Thank you in advance. Enjoying your videos

We have a similar bottom about 2 paved miles from our cattle. The creek can wash fence out on 1/3. Creek is the only water on it. Neighbor puts chicken litter on at no charge, he cuts,rakes and bales on the halves we pay nothing. I'm not sure that is the best use of this land. Any suggestions. Thank you!

Hey Greg I know this video is older. I have the same seeder. I recently cast red and white clover. Am curious, can you tell me what setting you have your seeder set at? The sticker on the side only indicates red clover at 22#'s per acre. I put five per acre as well and have mine set at about 3/8" opening. It worked, but do you have an insight?

The CRP program is a cost sharing arrangement with the government. There is a ton of info if you willing to put in the time yourself. Just type "CRP program".

You could try a parcel and see what you get. Once you get the soil ph over 6, the clover will do much better.

Greg what about hairy vetch. I was thinking of doing this because of the higher protein content during fall and winter. When I stopped fertilizing the clover stayed to come back into my fields and have seeded none of it

Our established older farms do not ever need seeding. With our grazing management, we can keep legumes in our pastures without seeding anything.

There are difficulties in separating every single weed seed out of a seed crop, because the seeds of certain weeds and certain crops are really close to the same size. So the government permits a small fraction of weed seed in crop seed, but the species of weeds and the level of them have to be stated on the seed tag.

No I have beaver it's not life it's death it's easy for you to say with all the land that you have. But when you're raising corn and Alfalfa and milk and cow's know you want to lose money. Have beaver in your creek sweeper near lost our farm because of beavers in every acre that we seen the rent had beavers in the creek. Me and My Neighbor pour out 24 beaver dams in 4 miles.

We like our beaver, they hold water in the creeks all year long. Some of their pools are a couple hundred yards long. I would not be so fond of them if they took out a corn crop!!
