Have shot archery for a long time, but years ago, nobody was talking about FOC and the magical arrow flight it produces. I remember the first time I shot an unfletched arrow with a 200 grain field point thinking there was not way this is going to work and was shocked at the arrow flight.

Jeff, after watching many of your videos, I am finally ready to make a purchase. I went back to the drawing board after watching your videos, and I'm actually pulling 28" with a 45lb Black Hunter Longbow. My arrow length is going to be 29.25" based on needing a little over an inch of clearance at my 28" draw. My question is, at that arrow length, and trying to decide between a 400 or 500 spine Gold Tip Traditional Arrow... what Spine, Insert and Point (broadhead) weight would you suggest for hunting?

Another Great video Jeff. My archery adventure took a sideways step. I picked up a Jennings Buck Master Lite Compound bow at a garage sale for $10. Got it set up with sight and w biscuit and a trigger and arrows off Amazon for about 80 bucks. Now that I'm shooting it, while it's fun to be shooting arrows now. It's REALLY not the kind of bow I want to be shooting. As I'm remote from any bow shop what I try is hit or miss at this point. My plan is still a recurve , traditional, split finger. Watching your vids just makes me want that all the more.

I macro tune with bare shaft, then micro tune with broadheads vs field points. The groups will give you the same information as bare shaft testing but to a finer degree. E.G. broadheads hitting to the right; shaft isn’t stiff enough; reduce point weight, shorten arrow, etc.

Using a 2117 aluminum this year with 225 Simmons great white out of a 57lb longbow. A good rule of thumb, as you said is 10 grains per lb and run as much FOC up front as reasonable, usually you end up around 20 percent. Also, going above 10 grains per pound I have found you really only loose trajectory, not gaining much, but if you shoot under 15 yards it probably won’t matter if you go up to 12 grains per lb.

Yes I like the 10 grains per pound in arrow weight.. Some of my arrow builds end up below or above the 10 grains per pound. My longbows of 44 to 46 pounds like the 500 spine while my 48 pound plus bows like the 350 spine arrows. That 2 to 3 pounds can determine your arrow spine and I run 200 to 250 grains up front with my arrows.. I like the 10 grains per pound arrows for target shooting to 30 yards as the arrows don't drop much..

Jeff, great content as usual. Love my Passion C2 by the way but we can never have enough ! I just had an ASL built for myself, a Mushin' stick from St. Patrick Lake Longbows. It's 66", 47lbs@29", cut to center on a G10 riser. I draw about 28.5. I usually have arrows cut to 29.5. and I prefer a .204 ID carbon arrow. I was thinking a 500 spine with a 50 gr. insert and a 190 Simmons Shark, can you please advise on the arrow selection or what you'd advise for this setup ? I'm wide open for your suggestion. Thanks, Joe

Trying to shoot as much as possible to get ready for hunting season but I believe my arrows are too long and not sure if they are the best set up. What is the most cost effective way to tune those arrows (no idea if they have added inserts or not), or should I switch and start from scratch. I do have another quick question. As you know I have been out of shooting for awhile. I noticed all of those strings had a yarn type silencer on them. What do you recommend for today’s bows with today’s silencing materials? The last I used were beaver ball string silencers. If you find that yarn works as well or better , tell me where to get some. Also what I have seen you put on some of your bow limbs. Thanks friend, Steve.

Thanks for the video. Love your channel. I've been trying to bareshaft tune to the point of frustration. I'm shooting an ILF recurve bow that's 47# at my 29.5" draw length. I'm shooting 31" 2016 Gamegetter arrows. I don't want to go too heavy, but I've tried 175 and 200 grain field points and its coming up stiff. Just got some 225 grain points which would have me at 605 grains without fletching. What would you recommend? I was wondering if I should try 1916s or put my 55# limbs on, but I really don't like shooting that heavy. I'd appreciate any help you can offer.

At your long draw length your probably pulling close to 55 pounds now. I would try a 2117 aluminum or 400 or 350 spine carbons. I shoot a 45# Bear Takedown at my 29” draw with 400 spine carbons cut to 30” with 100 grain brass inserts and 125 grain field point or broadheads and they shoot like darts! Total arrow weight is about 550 grains with 19% FOC. I hope this helps. Good luck and keep experimenting !

Jeff I shoot wood arrows and have switched from Douglas fir to Sitka spruce this year for lighter shafts. I have noticed that the same spine woodies of different type, tune a little different. When I bare shaft tune my wood arrows I have just accepted in the past that I am going to break at least 3 arrows. Do you have any suggestions on how I can have less broken arrows? It is like I can get them perfect at like 10 or so but as soon as I step back a little, they slap the target sideways and break. Should I just be satisfied with a ten yard tune?

Hi friend, I speak from Brazil, here we are laymen in archery, I wanted you to clear up some of my doubts I have many, and I admire you in the way you do things and your channel teaches me a lot every day I learn many things, I wanted to know if you can explain it to me , I have a Chinese bow, because when I put the blades at 55 pounds and I measure only 50 on the scale, and what is the ideal weight for 30-inch arrows and a 50-pound bow, I saw that it would be approximately at least 8 grains per pound that gives approximately 400 grains, but I see you using heavier weight arrows why?
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Жыл бұрын
Greetings my friend! I personally use slightly heavier arrows for hunting simply because the chances of hitting some kind of bone are very likely and the heavier arrows will break through much better than light arrows for sure but target shooting really doesn’t matter as much, I’ve just been way more successful hunting with arrows weighing at least 10gpp and it makes the bow quieter as well 👍🏻

I would think you’d want to go with a 500 spine and the 50 grain aluminum inserts with the swamp shark in 190 grain, that’s if your arrows are cut around 28” especially since they need to get around the shelf, I believe a 400 would be a little too stiff, you could also go with the 175 grain and a slightly longer arrow and honestly the warriors are great especially if you want to maybe get a half dozen pre fletched from 3 rivers, they’ve got the inserts as well 👍🏻

Yes sir and it really doesn’t matter which way you choose to go with but as far as getting setup right just remember for every additional inch of draw length past what the bow is marked @ 28” you’ll gain at least 3 pounds also you’ll want at least a 62” bow and definitely go up a spine on arrows, weight wise you want to be at least 15-20 pounds lighter than your compound, in general a full length 500 spine is good with that draw length up to 45# past that go with a 400 and possibly even a 340 to run heavier point weight and that’s if you’re drawing 30” or more and holding above 45 pounds because longer arrows will get weakened way faster than cut down arrows but usually a 400 spine is plenty for most long drawn recurves and longbows under 55#

Same way but they’re very difficult because they’re not consistent In straightness usually but you can easily get them in the ballpark just have to start long and keep cutting and tapering until they get stiff enough to shoot straight, it’s a task for sure lol

So are the 100g and 125g G5 Montec a total waste of time? I heard they are really good at killing deer but you're all about the heavy broadheads. Or are they only good on light poundage bows?
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 8 ай бұрын
The only ones I would shoot are the new solids because the vented ones are literally the loudest heads I’ve ever shot and a deer will 100% duck your arrows way before they get to them but it’s only because of the vents and that’s the only reason I don’t shoot them. The 125 grains is fine with some 100 grain inserts behind them, that’s usually plenty of point weight just stick with solid non vented heads in a 3 blade if possible 👍🏻

Thought you were a 3 blade vpa man because they out penetrated 2 blades?
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Жыл бұрын
They do penetrate very well but I wanted to try the sharks out last year and they were amazing, huge holes and put them down quickly with excellent blood trails plus they’re easier to sharpen by far so I’m definitely a fan, with that said the VPA is an excellent head just have to spend the time to get them sharp 👍🏻

@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 thanks for the reply. I’ve shot both and although I’m a huge fan of Simmons I ended up picking 3 blades simply because they are easier for me to shoot accurately with my method of split vision. Only down fall to the big simmons were they caught my eye much more than the 3 blades

@@matthewgill9820did you ever try positioning them so that the shelf and riser are covering the blades from your field of view? That’s how I do it with 1.5 inch abowyers and iron will wides on my bear recurves. I also shoot split vision as well and didn’t want to see any major amount of blade in my sight picture.

Hi Jeff, I wanted to get your opinion on a potential setup, GT Warriors 500 with luminok and a 190 gr. Treeshark,total weight 482 gr. with 240 up front out of my recurve shooting 45lbs @27 on a,28" arrow, is that enough to blow through a deer?, or should I use a smaller head to increase passthrouh potential?

For the past 40+ years, IVE tried over 70 different broadheads, which only make for 12 basic designs. All 2 blade and 3 blade, and various weights. ABSOLUTELY ALL OF THEM WERE GREAT FOR HUNTING, OUT TO 35 YARDS. much of this modern craze stuff, in the last 20 years, is just new fangled snake oil nonsensical OCD BULLSHIT.
