A beauty from the days when car designers worked on a drafting board with paper, pencil and slide rules. The aerodynamics were of the the "if it looks good it flows good" method. Engines were tuned by looking at and reading spark plugs and changing carb jets. Handling was "how does it feel?" Nowadays a gaggle of PhD's sit at CAD terminal, sending their work to CAD/CAM machines. Engine tuners stare at telemetry screens. Cars had sponsor decals but weren't fully plastered with them. And drivers after a race didn't have to make sure that they mentioned every sponsor. The cars back then embodied that designer and had some of his soul in them. Now they are just one design computerized rolling billboards.

But, and you can't argue otherwise, new racecars are a lot faster, and if it's a race, that's the point. However I agree with you, it is a little sad that newer racecars don't look this good. At least high performance road cars nowadays go as fast and look almost as good as racecars from yesteryear.

you guys forget an important detail. safety regs and the dreaded rulebook every single official competition comes with. if rules allowed pretty looks, it would be a whole other story.

This is my 500th time watching this!!! its a milestone for sure! this is the greatest vid on youtube or even the internet as a whole! I watch it every day, and anytime i need to feel something powerful inside myself, the love I have for this car is forever! I have never driven anything like this car but I know it is what I have been looking for all my life, it is the proverbial dragon I have been chasing, it is why I'm here in this stupid planet, I NEED this car in my life.

What an amazing creation. I have loved this car since I watched Robert Duvall outrun the robocops in THX1138. This is my epitome of a race car. The sound. The look. I hope to find a place to have a track day with one.
@AndieBlack137 жыл бұрын
Beau Grant Yes indeed, the future as portrayed in THX1138 had a Lola...but the Lola as portrayed has a Gas-Turbine engine making it go...The gas turbine much more now than then...is somewhat less expensive, but far more powerful. The jet-boating community that races jet-boats in Canada, has embraced gas-turbines for power...some 1,350 HP is common. Now,...put that 1,350 HP in a Lola & let's see what happens...some intense aerodynamic studies will be needed for that 300 mph.

+Seige CJ this, the ford GT40, the AC/Shelby cobra, all excellent cars, just a magical combination.
@coenijn6 жыл бұрын
I mostly agree but an even better example of American power and European chassis is the Bizzarini A3C: Italian styling and chassis with a Chevy 327 cu in V8 engine, first in class at the 1965 24h du Le Mans in the 5000+ cc class. That to me just screams greatness. However, the Ford GT40 was loosely based on the Lola Mk6 so there is a bit of British chassis history in America's greatest endurance race car.
@theant98216 жыл бұрын
coenijn the gt40 was a British car with a British built American engine, like the t70. only the ford mk4 was American and that wasn't a gt40, it was a completely different car.

At 2:50 "but not be worrying about the age of any of the components, and thinking Is this about to break?" According to legend, if you were racing a brand-new Lotus in the 1960/70's, you would be right to worry about what was about to break! I get the feeling you could hammer an original fifty year old Lola with greater peace of mind. 😉

@DonnyDonnMendoza8 жыл бұрын
They were built using the actual original moulds used to build the lola t70. The quality and attention to period-correct detail is such that the FIA classify these as "classic" and allow them to race in officially-sanctioned events against T70s, GT40s and other cars from the era. As an aside, Broadley Automotive also take their name from the founder/creator of Lola, Eric Broadley.
