I live just west of Arbutus and see this every week while walking the area. From 1982-92 my office was right on the corner of Broadway & Cypress and I would have had a near bird's eye view of the work. The noise and vibration would make life pretty miserable though. I later had offices on the corner of Broadway & Arbutus - the western terminus and then Broadway & Burrard. All of these would have given me great vantage points. I still remember the regular trains that ran along Arbutus and crossed Broadway a couple of times each day. Oh, how times have changed. It seems that the organizers of the project have learned a thing or two about managing vehicle traffic after the mess that they created along Cambie Street and the businesses that suffered from lack of customer access. It's not great towards the Arbutus terminus but it's mostly accessible and the businesses are surviving.

Great progress and good news with new development. I lived on broadway from 2017-2021. So much potential. Not having a fully protected one way bike lanes on both side of the broadway street is a big miss imo. It will be years before this street is redesigned
@izikavazo4 ай бұрын
I'm not a biker, but I fully support additional bike lanes. Out of curiosity, how is 10th for biking? I walk out between Main and Oak, and it feels really ideal. But maybe a little too far off the main thoroughfare?

I wish California could learn from Skytrain to build projects at a decent cost. They should have just kept the TBMs going further west.
@eugenetswong5 ай бұрын
No. They should spend that specific money on other transit projects. This subway extension is worth the money, but not all the way to UBC.
@arden67255 ай бұрын
@@eugenetswongit’s embarrassing that one of the biggest universities in canada isn’t connected to rail
@eugenetswong5 ай бұрын
@@arden6725 That's just not true. The buses are 70% empty at the last few miles before the University during many times of the day. Either Rapid Bus or Bus Rapid Transit will do just fine for the bang for the buck. The last mile will always generate less revenue and bring less value per dollar, so choosing a cheaper service makes sense. It's basically a suburb, or a poorly designed downtown. The saved money should be invested in the north shore or maybe the highway bus routes. Service there will alleviate traffic jams that the university will never experience.
@libshastra5 ай бұрын
This is good reporting. Besides, I wonder if precast segment would be less expensive to build rather than building formwork for every construction project. It seems like we are paying somewhere between 1.5 to 2.5x in construction costs compared to Europe and Asia.
@StainerTheFirst5 ай бұрын
It really does depend on the project. All the beams for the guideway are precast, same with the tunnel ring segments. But since the station boxes are all unique to match their sites, and having strict buildings code to follow, precasting doesn't really fit. Also have to remember that land costs, years of planning, business cases, and designing are all included in the 2.8B price tag. Could it be done cheaper? Probably. But would we've made the mistake once already by going cheap (Canada line).

10:37 that worker eyeballing your drone. Do you have to get permission to film/fly to capture this footage? Or how does that work for you? Do you have any footage of ‘hostility’? 😅
@StainerTheFirst4 ай бұрын
10:37 is just a camera peaking over a fence :) I shoot everything from public property and follow all the regulations when flying my drone. I've been approached a couple times by crews when flying, never hostile, mostly just curious as to what I'm doing. You can get pretty far with a positive attitude and a smile!

As someone who lives south of the Fraser the expansion of Sky Train on Broadway is an ongoing disappointment. Trans Link is still part of the underdevelopment of this part of Metro Vancouver. South of the Fraser has much less transit than the rest of Metro, We also have only one major hospital which still can't do angioplasty. This results in many hundred of unnecessary ambulance trips to New West and municipal Vancouver. Yes the line to Langley is in its infancy but long, long overdue. Trans Link resolutely ignores the rail line to Chiliwack. A community group saved the passenger rights on the line. Trans Link didn't. South of the Fraser is an automotive society and still be that long into the future. Municipal Vancouver is a weight around the neck of Metro Vancouver. Tear up its special charter and put it back under the Municipal Act. like all of the rest of the province. Stop the special treatment. Vancouver is a small minority of Metro.
