I've wanted to act since I was a preteen, and watching backstage stuff like this just gets me so buzzed. Not because of the glitz and glamour and the obvious attraction of being a star, but seriously, just look how much fun they have together! Acting is hard yes, and completely emotionally and physically draining sometimes, but the family you get from every show you're in is so strong, and the injokes and random sing-a-longs, and just everything about it is so much fun that it doesn't matter how tired you are afterwards! Plus it's just such a fascinating process bringing stories to life on stage with just a few costumes, a set and a script. If I ever get to be a chorus member in Hamilton, my career will be made.

AHHHHH why is everyone in the cast so talented and adorable and just totally awesome people? Secondly can someone explain what the difference between a swing/understudy/ensemble is? Also Andrew Chaplelle understudies SIX PARTS HOLY CRAP that's a lot. Leslie's "Without You" from RENT is just WOW like I need a full cover of that right now. I loved seeing a bit of rehearsal even that tiny part is amazing. Also anyone else see Seth at 8:11 and think "Graffiti Pete!"?

So, to my understanding: Swing: Cast member who learns multiple parts (either ensemble or named) that could be expected to perform them at any point if the usual actor is out for the day. Swings have an incredibly hard job. In some shows, swings are expected to be able to cover every part if needed. Understudy: Cast member who typically learns a few parts in their entirety in case the usual actor is out. Typically an understudy would not learn more than 2-3 parts, but they are the first-string replacements for main named parts. Ensemble: Cast members with supporting roles. They are the dancers and ensemble singers that accompany scenes with the named lead characters. Hope this helps!

Something like that! Generally, an understudy is the first replacement for a major part. One person may be an understudy for several parts, so if the main actor isn't there, one of his/her understudies will go on. If for some reason half the cast is out sick with the plague, then yes, a swing would most likely fill the role. Swings/understudies are almost always ensemble members unless they are needed to fill major roles for a night. That way, they can watch the show and keep track of the blocking and choreography for multiple parts while performing every night.

Navy Spiecker dang being a swing sounds like it's the hardest part aha also are there understudies for the ensemble? Like what if they have 10 members of the ensemble and someone is out... they'd need someone else because then the numbers and formations for dances and such would be off

It is! Swings are impressive as hell. And generally not, if a member of the ensemble is out then there would probably just be a hole onstage. HOWEVER, sometimes a show may have a B cast that performs some days of the week but not all. Casts may switch from day to day, and in that case, a member of the B cast could come and fill the spot for the A cast. However, this is rare, especially on Broadway.
