I've been using it for the last year or so. It's been great. Much better than the old GIMP. Still not photoshop, but at least it's a bit nicer to use than it was before.

As long as GIMP is not getting a major UI rework, it is going to stay in it's niche. It's kinda in the same situation as Blender was prior to 2.8. The UI is terribly unintuitive and cluttered and the GTK3 rewrite has not changed anything about that.

To merge an FX to a group, you’d have to flatten the group By keeping it non destructive, the group can be manipulated, then the FX applies and recalculates. Flattening the FX would flatten the layers

While I will only jump to GIMP when they add Non-Destructive Editing(which from what the devs said, it's not coming with 3.0 - but at a later update), this video gave me hope that things are still going to the right direction. And the fact that PhotoGIMP still work making the UI useable is also great news.

I am not in the graphics field at any level, but if I had insane amounts of money, I would fund an OSS project to go after Photoshop and the rest of Adobe's stuff. No, it would not build off Gimp, Inkscape or any other trash.

Obviously it would be great to have a FOSS replacement for Photoshop, but it makes no sense to act like improvements don't matter unless they reach that threshold. Change happens on the margin, so every small step means that GIMP becomes a viable alternative for more people. Maybe you use Photoshop professionally and that's not you, but the majority of people are not professionals and just need somewhere between basic and intermediate editing functionality

@@jenbanim Maybe Gimp(3.1?) in 2070 can be on par with Photoshop from 2010. If you want a project to be relevant, it has to be able to compete. Not just for Linux adoption, but for Gimp adoption across all platforms. Gimp is a non-starter in that sense. Honestly, I just run a Windows 10 VM and use paintDOTnet for the few times I need to do things with images. It is so much better than Gimp. It is not OSS, but it is free, has lots of features, and gets improved often. If the devs ported it to Linux, it would end Gimp and that would be for the best.

I dont care much about the new vs old icon but i wonder how the new looks more modern. The old Icon is 3D where as the new one looks flat, like someone used a bunch of tools to create shapes and then filled colors. To me thats a step back in quality in terms of Icons, at least personally i would consider a 3D icon to be more modern then something like that design.

GIMP 3.0.0 will use SSD by default with an option to enable CSD. This is done by default because there are some X11 window managers that draw decoration even if CSD is enabled.
