Relatively a sequential trans can handle like 3 or 4 times the power application of your conventional manual or automatic trans by design because of the tooth sizes cut into the gears and depth of each locking, you run into problems like this when you neutral drop a gear and slam it into the next. It's extremely common for motorcycles typically to drop a neutral shift when up-shifting and then the operator will typically try to force the shift to happen and the pressure of the gear slamming into place typically breaks gear selectors and often the gears themselves because of the spinning momentum and immediate contact with no relief from the clutch. It's annoying but the standard operating procedure for missing a shift is doing nothing but bringing the vehicle to a stop and then running all the way down to first gear as not to allow momentum from the vehicle to spin the gearsets and cause a failure when selecting. You can usually get away with forcing the gear selection a few times but after that you're going to get the exact result from what you got here, just gotta figure out your shifting setup better to avoid the false neutrals.
@Nebbia_affaraccimiei4 жыл бұрын
I feel like this started to get stressed when he was "missing" 4th on the first few times out, probably due to not enough travel on the selector (they looked at it with Matt months later when he was visiting).

If you watch the video you can see on his 2-3 shift he hit a “false neutral” rather than fully engaging 3rd gear then proceeds to slam it into 4th.
@ymsmmnt4 жыл бұрын
J K false neutrals are pretty common on motorcycles, but I disagree with the procedure of getting out of them. You simply release throttle, apply clutch and get the next gear in, as simply as that. The gearbox can handle it perfectly

At around 18:30 in the video where y'all assembled the dog box 11 months ago, when torquing that "loose nut" (the one you noted was loose upon opening it here) the torque wrench never clicked at its set torque, around 125 lb/ft if memory serves, though in the video you said it was 80 to 90 lb/'ft. Its alright though, we all make mistakes in life, so the fact y'all are moving forward to rebuild it and taking it like champs, that's good. When you shift a sequential with dogs it's essential that the dog disengages and then the next one re engages. I think there might have been two issues, one give the engine cut more time off, we're only talking fractions. The second is that you must pull the gear selector right through so it's pulled the gear fully together. I think you're work around for the over sensitive strain gauge meant you weren't pulling the gear home and so it bounced off the edge of the dog. In the sequential in mine (no auto engine cuts) you need to give it a firm, solid pull through each gear, rather than a flick of the wrist.

You might want to check your shift cut settings too. If it half engages or doesn't go in properly from a large RPM differential it'll beat the dog rings out of it. Raceweek (or for that matter Dragweek) take the minivan! You will win hearts and awards - and there is plenty of room of crew and parts.

If I remember correctly LZ had a very similar issue with his Samsonas sequential in his S15. It was caused by not pulling hard enough on the shifter. Sequential boxes need a solid pull when you change gear. You can’t just flick them in like you did when it broke. You need to look at how your strain gauge is set up and change it so that you can hold the shifter and give it a solid pull as you go through each gear. It’s just a case of teething troubles really, expensive teething but you’ve not done anything really wrong. You should get in touch with Quaife and get some advice from them about optimal setup for drag racing. I’m sure they’d be happy to help you out.
