In this video I attempt to fix a 1986 Atari 2600 Junior purchased faulty from eBay. Can this 38 year old console work again? Let's find out
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in these videos.
Many thanks, Vince.

Nice Job mate 👍Was one of the first home consoles I ever played on (belonged to be one of my friends from school) back in the 80s. I think you are thinking of Missile Command possibly or centipede, they had trackballs, but Williams defender had a joystick with only up and down and a button for thrust / fire and hyperspace and smart bomb if I remember...

Seriously, do a composite video mod on it. It's relatively easy and the kit on aliexpress is cheap. I personally don't use the connectors, though, instead I got a bag of 3-point stereo jacks and fitting composite cables. The antenna output doesn't work anyways anymore after the mod, so I remove the antenna connector and place the stereo jack there, which means that I don't have to cut the case. The picture is way better than with the antenna signal.

There is also a version of this console with only one chip, the whole Atari on one IC but it is pretty rare. Ben Heck did a video on this to build his portable Atari - "Atari 2600 Junior Single Chip Portable".

I bought one that had those cartridge tabs break off. I ended up using 2 M3 bolts and nuts to fix it. I installed the M3 bolts from under the cartridge slot. I put the bolts through the center cartridge slot as far to the side of the slot as possible. I used M3 nuts to tighten them as much as I could, then cut off the excess of the bolt so it doesn't protrude out too much. I did that about 8 years or so ago and it still works fine. Also, I recommend doing a video mod to it. A basic composite video mod works fine, but I highly recommend the UAV, Ultimate Atari Video. Awesome job bringing that console back to life, Vince!

It says Atari 1983 because it's copyright 1983, based off the 1983 revision of the board. If you look on the back there's the number stamped "9026". I'm guessing this one was manufactured 26th week of 1990. (Yes, Atari were still manufacturing these until 1992-ish)

I have a few of these jr 2600’s in the loft. The 2600 had very limited sprite capability, I think the max was three or four and then they’d start flashing if they all needed to be on screen or some were blanked out to maintain the others. A fantastic machine in its day but nowadays….. its 4bit (I think) processor is laughable but shows how amazing the programmers must have been. Arguably it’s best game to many, Adventure, a fantastic game, all fitted on a 4k ROM cart…. That’s 4096 bytes for graphics, code and the Dragon/Bat AI !

I'm surprised you could even tune it in. Here in Australia, our Analogue TV network was shutdown in 2013, we haven't had TVs with an analogue tuner in them for a good 7yrs or so now, so I have to rely on either modding my old consoles or if they have composite, use that instead. But even with composite, most of my consoles just show a fuzzy picture on all 3 of my TVs (with my oldest TV being 2008 -- Which has an analogue tuner).

11:00 you should always insert and fasten the screw before soldering such components. Otherwise you might have to reflow it to align it properly, or the solder gets mechanical stress when you fasten the screw and might break or even rip off pads.

Vince, in general it is not a good idea to try to fix a trimpot if you want a long lasting repair. Suppose you could not get another trimpot, you still would have the option to use a simple resistor (or combination of resistors) to replace it, considering that a trimpot is simply a variable resistance component. You would only have to determine the resistance that works for the circuit.

Great fix, Vince!! A couple things about Defender on the 2600. If you move the ship all the way down into the city and press fire it will set off a smart bomb and kill all the aliens on the screen. You have three smart bombs to start as shown in the lower right of the screen. If you move all the way up your ship will disappear and when you press fire it activates hyperspace and you appear randomly in the play space. If all the humans die (the things you are saving) it takes you into a special play area where you get attacked by monsters.

I had an Atari back in '83/84 with the original leaf switch joysticks, which kept snapping on the leaf parts - went through a couple of those. I used to love Atlantis, such a great game. Fab fix as always Vince! So close with the thermal paste too, keep practicing, one day you'll get the hallelujah sound!

The atari 2600 can be played with a sega genesis/mega drive 3 button controller in place of the standard joystick that came with the 2600. Also atari just released an actual official game pad on their website that came out this month of May and is compatible with 2600, 5200, 5400, and 7800 and all new VCS game console and I believe the 400 mini console as well.

@MyMateVince The cart block is easily defeated if you take the cart port mount apart and remove the locking mechanism that surrounds the cart connector pins. Open it up and you'll see what I mean. This was a common failure point and I have lost count how many times I made that mod. Never understood why Atari made it that way, it served no real purpose.

Nice fix, Vince :) Bur didn't you have any scrap/donor board to get a potentiometer from? Or at least parts for it? The 2600jr was also MY first experience with color video games, besides the C64 we each had at home. For the card connector, you can get a clone console dirt cheap, and replace the connector.

I would replace the 7805 with a 78S05 which runs cooler and gives you a much more cleaner output which can also improve the Picture Quality. On the SNES it definitely improves the Video Quality. The 7805 is also known to fail on older Devices which cause dozen of Commodore 64 to fail because when they fail they short and input Voltage will be forwarded to the Output which kills sensible Components on the Mainboard like the CPU or RAM.

The picture is way better than with the antenna signal. At the moment I am trying to fix an Atari 7800, which so far gave me multiple headaches. I think I've finally nailed the fault down to a defective transistor, after replacing defective switches, a defective flip-flop-chip, all three caps (one exploded while I had the console in my board holder) and other parts that I can't remember. That thing has the most overengineered power on circuit I've ever seen, literally half the components on the board are for switching the console on and off. At the moment I am waiting for the replacement transistor (MJE210) from aliexpress, and if that doesn't work I am going to short-circuit the transistor (if I do that at the moment, the console works) and put in a push-switch in the wiring behind the power connector. Reset won't work that way, but I'm at the point where I stopped caring.

The best thing you could do for these consoles is replacing that tired voltage regulator with a new one and change the caps. This will protect other old components. You can upgrade your RF modulator to composite out for under $15, especially if you decide to keep the console. The mod improves video and audio as well. From these two consoles, the heavy sixer is the more desired one. With that you have plenty of content to make another cool video :).
