The Landscape there is so hilly and rocky but it looks really beautiful on video. Thanks for giving an explanation of your words to direct your Sheep dog. I couldn't understand the process but now it makes more sense. Can tell your dad has been working with sheep for years and nothing seems to phase or discourage him. Hope he can rest some and heal that sprained Ankle.

Charlie is an excellent drover. Great to see a fit Labrador. The lamb and dad good company. When we came to our small hill farm the hedges were gappy and ugly. We stock fenced on both sides and soon the hedge filled the gaps itself. We cut in an ‘A’ shape as high as the hedge cutter will go and now our farm almost looks like a country park and the stock get shelter. We also planted some tree shelter belts of mixed woodland. Hawthorn, field maple, holly, sweet chestnut, oak, beech and hazel. It wasn’t instant but seven years later quite impressive. Also getting a few nuts to pick. We did get some government grant aid for the tree planting. Oh and another grant scheme involved fencing stream side corridors and planting trees. They look really beautiful with lots of tree varieties benefitting wildlife. But we do have water troughs so stream access not needed.

I planted Norway Spruce, also called Mountain Spruce (Picea abies) common in Europe. They are fast growers, 2 to 3 feet a year once roots are established. They spread broadly and my sheep prefer being under them compared to the small sheep shelter I built. I have a line of them planted along the field edge decades ago. Sheep will nip at the lower branches in winter and they do nip the new growth in spring if no grass is left. Deer leave them alone. I plan to plant a cluster in the field like an island and they'd need protecting from sheep nipping new growth. I also have apple trees the sheep love scratching on and eating lower leaves and apples that hit the ground. Those def need protection as they scratch on saplings and the ram kills them scratching his head. The ram lambs learned they can lift the wire protection cage and eat apple leaves so I had to get metal camping tent ground pins to hold the cage down.

You would need some trees that will stay green all year round leylandii would be a great shelter belt on lower fields the grow about 18” a year sowing a meter apart the fill in very quick offer great wind break of ewes and lambs some people don’t like them but if you want shelter there hard to beat imo other options fencing with the green wind breaker netting would offer a good protection at short notice

Are you using your hands to give Sally direction, only asking as she keeps turning off the sheep looking back at you, this can cause confusion for her as the right/left command become reversed when she is facing the wrong way. Better to wait until she looks back in the direction of the sheep before giving a command. Keep up the good work and best of luck with the training

Sally doing really well. Plenty work over the Summer and she will be a mighty dog. Go easy on the treats cos she will end up with health problems when she is older. I think if you put in hedges they would work well for you and you would be able to get them cut with the hedge trimmer. You would need to fence them off to keep sheep out from them.

As the trees won't be grown for a while, consider building a few 3 sided shelter with a roof? I'm not sure if that's a good temporary solution with your wind, but if they are moveable at least you could locate where they are needed. I'm surprised Father went to the doctor at all! Must have been a near amputation! He's an accident waiting to happen most days, but then it was a not so dramatic issue that got him. Good luck?

Slow down on the commands you give and make sure she does follow the command even if you have to repeat it before you give her another , that will do should only be used when you need her to stop and come back to you not when you mean lay down or stand before a new command , you are confusing her so she's looking at you for conformation when she should be looking at the sheep

Hawthorn, blackthorn will provide a wind break if you lay them in their second or third year and are pretty fast growing. Not sure whether you have a tradition of hedge laying over there, but there are plenty of tutorials on KZbin to give you the general idea. The advantage of the thorns is that it's easy to grow more as and when needed.
