Obviously I haven't seen their program performed live yet but I really like how the music from the pit and the battery is so disconnected. At the beginning it almost feels like two separate shows that are trying to combine, to "Mend" the gap between them. I wonder if the visual book supports this theme. BCP always has this unique tone that no other group has ever pulled off, and it feels so effortless when they do it. Like seriously, this book is actually nuts considering how free-form it feels, with all of these distinct juxtaposed rhythms clashing against each other. That stuff is INSANELY hard to do, even disregarding that they have to get like 40+ members all synced up to this same idea. This show is good, I like it.

Yooooo, every year it feels like the writers “speak drum” Like it always feels like more than just, show beats, it feels like the ensemble is actually communicating through music, their writing just oozes tastefulness and expressiveness, and the players always seem to be able to convey and interpret that writing perfectly. This is why BC amazes me, not for their GE which is magnificent in its own right, not cause they’re partnered with Adam watts who is an amazing musician as well, not because roger seems to know how to get exactly the sounds he wants from these drums and players, but because the writing and execution of the music is just a masterclass in what I refer to as speaking drum. Sometimes other groups get close but nobody is as consistent with it as BC.

Solid job on the multicam work! Guessing you have a GoPro on sticks and a handheld cam for closeups? Can't beat it!

I can really appreciate the extra demand this more free form approach brings to the performance. Frankly, I find it refreshing that it's not just about cramming more notes into each measure.

@Samuel Nelson I think that shows with abstract concepts can be balanced out with music that flows and is satisfyingly written. Imo this year's and even last year's books are too disconnected and don't have enough conceptual justification to balance out the abstract writing. I believe that 2017 and 2018 had the best music, as it was unique but also satisfying and connected.

I know I say this a lot about BCP, (or maybe I don't but I think it a lot) I love how the pit is given a chance to shine: I always feel that the pit acts as an accompaniment to the drums in many ensembles, but here it feels like the opposite, not to mention the fact that their pit is insanely hype.
