Every case and working style of every dentist is different. Some dentist made smaller size core to reduce crown cutting procedure and some do proper cutting after full core preparation. In some patient, crown build up done with composite, after that crown may not be needed. All depends on case to case.

Yes, it's mandatory to do crown cutting for cap. Crown preparation is the term for tooth cutting
