If you cut the wires at different lengths it doesn't bulge so much and there's also less risk of short circuit :)
@TonyBarr992 жыл бұрын
That is a great idea (i.e. not dodgy at all)! I'll try to remember that one.
@lauraiss10272 жыл бұрын
Also it's bulging less if wires are twisted and soldered together one facing the other, not bending like here making wires twice as thick.
@jmr2 жыл бұрын
I do that sometimes.

I worked as a technician in a pro audio workshop when I was young and I had to make literally thousands of XLR and Phone patchcables. And I always used my teeth to strip the small inner wires of the shielded Cables. After half a year I had a dentist appointment and he 'admired' a one and a half millimeter deep notch in one of my front teeth. After that I used my Jokari strippers all the time. Luckily the tooth enamel grew back and the notch disappeared after one year.
@djthdinsessions2 жыл бұрын
Haha that was a truly top notch method 😂

I had no idea your teeth would recover, that’s amazing
@RaduTek2 жыл бұрын
Hmm, after reading this I also noticed that I also have a tiny notch in one my front teeth, the rightmost one, the one I use to strip wires. Nobody learnt me to do it with my fingers, in fact my parents kept telling me to stop using my teeth, I just seemed to have grown it on instinct or smth.
@pabloyesid2 жыл бұрын
I used to do the same until my mom said (very angry): don't do that or you'll damage your teeth... :V
@AlexanderBukh2 жыл бұрын
i did that in teenage but not much and very carefully so that wire does not drag about the teeth, i hated it. later i started tinkering with more types of wire and the method wasn't useful anymore my teeth were worn with sunflower seeds tho

What I sometimes do is cut a piece of hot glue and stick it inside the heatshrink ends before heating it. You also have heatshrink that has something similar or maybe even the same kind of glue inside, but as I wrote, a small bit of hot glue works too.
@joefish60912 жыл бұрын
Double heatshrink, a short piece (and PVC tape if need to build up the diameter) inside a longer piece, then you have a sealed and tapered repair which helps with aesthetics and physical. it looks professional too.

I might have taken the keyboard apart and soldered on an old USB cable with the end cut off directly to the keyboard. It depends on how difficult assembly and disassembly was. 🤣
@richclips2 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I do too, stagger them so it's a slimmer repair and also less chance of a short if it gets distressed in the future.... Of course replacing the whole cable is preferable if you have a donor cable handy 😋 Love the videos, thanks as always 😄

Teeth are a terrible idea! I used to use my teeth when I was young. Until that one time I failed to release the pressure on the cable once the insulation ripped. I pulled the cable with the copper strands "sliding" between my front teeth. Holy sh*t! The friction heat went straight into the nerve endings of my front teeth. Not even my dentist ever caused that kind of pain :-)
@Debraj19782 жыл бұрын
And the heavy metal that you could possibly ingest over time.
@zenvir16802 жыл бұрын
Or buy extra teeth ^_^ Just Kidding!! wire strippers or cutter wil be better idea. I lost some of enamel on my front teeth in childhood because of using them as scissors for everything
@tudomerda2 жыл бұрын
I stagger the joining of the wires, start joining a splice close to one end and then splice the second further along etc. this reduces the diameter of the bulge in the center and also prevents clumping of all joints in one area.

If soldering is a pain, I've found a good alternative is to crimp mini bootlace ferrules over the twisted wires. Of course use the uninsulated ones! They seem to give a nice secure joint and of course prevents any damage due to heat or solder splashes.
@martinsvendsen84526 ай бұрын
Also recommended, especially for beginngers; double check and test that all connections are working before closing and finishing up! :) (First time I was doing it I had to re-do everything because of some of the cables weren't connected well enough, hehe)
@arduinoatolyem21212 жыл бұрын
You can also a lighter for shrinking the heat-shrink tubes :) But be careful with the lighter and soldering iron.
@justaguy4real5 ай бұрын
8:30 alternating the folds of the soldered wires would've let the blue heat shrink fit over it... or of course cut the wires at dif lengths. but many people dont think of that right away. so folding them alternating different directions helps.

if I do this I cut the wire pairs different lengths to prevent a big bulge in one place, which could end up shorting if crushed I would recommend a 'linemans splice' for a job like that as not only is is it neater but is stronger if cable is likely to get tugged - glad it worked out for you and love your content

Two flies in one smack in Norway as well. Heat shrink can be such a pain if you forget it, or there isn't room for it without it shrinking from just soldering.
@mariushmedias2 жыл бұрын
I would have suggested making adding a small board with a microUSB connector on the back of the keyboard and then you can use a cheap USB - microUSB cable and replace cables as they get damaged in the future. It would have looked more professional if you had liquid flux on the wires, tin them, and then solder the ends together without twisting them. Even better idea would have been to offset each wire by a cm or so, because that way you don't have a big thick bulge on the cable.

I chipped one of my top front teeth when stripping teflon coated wire when I worked at Intel. That wasn't so bad, but to even it out they ground down my front teeth a bit. What a horrible burning stench affair that scenario was, omg. The smell of rosin flux is a dream compared to burning teeth.

@isoslow2 жыл бұрын
WOW, that's a horrible job. You should've pre tinned each wire and then soldered them opposing to each other. The way you did it and then twisted the wires 180 degrees puts a lot of mechanical stress and the wire can break near the joint.
@robinvince6162 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'd twist and tin each wire, then just overlap each pair side-by-side (opposing), and solder them. It makes a perfectly strong slimmer joint and there is no tendency for it to untwist or tear if tugged. As each joint is thinner, the heatshrink bulges less too, which makes for a neater job.
@tushar6733532 жыл бұрын
for better safety dont do parallel joint in multicore cable ...always joint in multi step so it doesnt get shorted whenever insulation gets broken and NEVER EVER use insulation electrical tape.
