We've got Sick Seconds 2.0, the world's quickest street car, at the PRO Superstar Shootout Presented By SCAG Power Equipment at Bradenton Motorsports Park. We were going to match race Brett LaSala but unfortunately that didn't pan out so we were on our own...but somehow we found a way to lose our own match race! The motor dropped a valve mid-track and it was carnage inside. After Sick Week didn't go to plan and now this it sucks...just when we were getting somewhere...

Having been the cylinder head guy on a nitro car I can tell you the only thing that prevents the type of failure you experienced is constant service. If the valves had been removed and checked regularly they would have told you prior to this happening. The easiest way is to check over all height. If the valve is getting longer the head is being stretched. A visual of the backside of the valve may give you an indication but an increase in length tells you the head of the valve is going to come off. It is up to you to determine the amount of growth you will accept prior to replacement. I once threw away four brand new inconel exhaust valves that had one pass on them. The boss wanted to try a little more seat pressure and the swirl on the backside of the valve was visually straighter. If my memory serves me, those valves had stretched 0.100 to 0.125", and that was from one pass. Don't get me started on head droop on the exhaust valves that remained open when the engine stopped turning.

@@PennyTrayshun-u8u My observation as a couch potato is that there is a bit of a difference in maintenance schedules between the guys running SMX on these drag and drives and guys running similar HP engines. At a certain level teams seem to start considering much of the valvetrain as consumables. I think Steve would be doing himself a big favor if he pushed similar maintenance schedules for these SMX engines. Valves, springs, retainers after every drag week event seems like cheap insurance and would almost certainly prevent a lot of the failures we've seen.

@@PennyTrayshun-u8u a proline hemi needs the rods changed after 26 passes. If you put it on the chip, you change all the valves, springs, retainers, and rods. It's not the fault of the SMX that Tom put it on the chip multiple times and kept sending it. If everyone running the SMX maintained them like a proline, you wouldn't be having these issues. Even the prolines can grenade for no reason. If you take the amount of miles these go on the street and still make that hp and how many of them live for the entire week, it's pretty damn amazing. What a bummer! Sorry for your misfortune. Dig the positive attitude throughout. Hell, it ain't nothing that money won't fix. LoL! Steve will make it alk better again, I'm sure of it. Starting line between fuel cars is insane! It feels like your organs are getting scrambled. 😁

Steve literally said your valves are due to have new retainers as well right before that happened in his last video.. I was hoping you made it without any problems to whenever you decided to get it freshened again... now we got to listen to everybody with out a race car that knows nothing about it tell us why because they saw a video on KZbin and now are experts .. one thing's for sure you could tell it didn't sound happy from the minute you let off the brake

They run street miles and race passes. Figuring out when things “time out” is different than an engine that is drag race only. Unfortunately, it cost to do what others haven’t done yet.

I've dropped a valve with 300 horsepower in my autocross car and it was not pretty either! Biggest difference is probably the 175,000 miles since rebuilding the heads. I had piston glitter coming out of my tailpipe. 🤣

Well, that's true R&D, Cleetus style. Run what ya Brung, turn it up, then... Fix it and try till it holds. Preventative maintenance. Look at Top Fuel ⛽ it's a rebuild after every run pretty much.

It’s time to start tip welding the retainers together around the valve. Not too the valve. Just tac them on both sides making it impossible to float and loosing retention. Take it apart with the tip as well😮

How to say "I've never disassembled valvetrain before" you don't even know the difference between a retainer and keepers, or the fact there's grooves in the top of the valve stem that the keepers lock into, if you weld the keepers, you ain't taking the valve out.
