Mandy came to us recently but a colic lead to a sooner-than-planned medical evaluation. Previously damaged withers were not the only problems this poor girl was experiencing.
Hopi, meanwhile, decided to scratch her healing eyelid, making Dr Nancy evaluate it again.

This POOR baby girl. It's disgusting to me how cruel people can be to God's most beautiful creations. I'm happy she was surrounded by loving people that cared enough for her to do this last act of kindness. She's running free in the clouds.

I rescued an emaciated mare from auction one time, and she was so impacted that the vet thought the mass was cancer (she was a grey). He treated the colic anyway, but I wasn't ready to put her down, as I only had her 3 days. I walked her and walked her. Had a friend come over to help. She brought me an orange popcicle, but Mis Fortune wanted it. That's when I thought we had a chance. Kept walking her. I knew we had to get her to pass that mass. Gave her a warm, sloppy mash and she gobbled it up. Kept walking. At 11pm, she finally pooped! Huge mass of dry, hard poop. And full of worms. I took Mis to the vet a month later for follow-up, and he was shocked she was still alive. She was the sweetest girl, and I loved her so. Her early neglect finally caught up with her, and arthritis in her knees got her down and colicing. I had to let her go. We estimated her at 11-12 when I got her, and she lived to be about 22. I don't think she would have survived that colic if I had gotten her at 22.

One of the most important things I've learned over many years of animal care, is to let our animals go before they hit rock bottom. It never gets any easier, but letting them go on a good day is so much better than waiting until they are struggling just to breathe etc. Which they only do because of us, and because of their bond and love for us. It's the final act of love and most powerful last gift we can give. I lost two of my doggos in 2019. In my video of one of my dogs Pinky, she's full of pee & vinegar playing with me, being her bossy lil self in my backyard, on the day I let her go. She was happy and doesn't appear sick at all. Especially for an almost 19yr old dog. When my vet arrived to euthanize her, Pinky fell asleep quickly with a wee doggie smile on her face. I'm also a massive advocate for euthanizeing if at all possible, at home. There's a major difference in that our animals aren't scared or feeling anxious. It's literally just another day around the home with the people they care about and their favorite blanket, toys or dog bed. (As for cost, it's actually not much more.) So this is the second most important last gift we can give. For both my girls in 2019, I cut a piece of my hair off and tied it around their paws. Such a tiny thing to do, but it's a final thank you as well as continues the where you go, I go too. Now it's time for my 16yr old blind and deaf since birth, dachshund. His heart is failing. Yes, I could probably keep him going for another 6 months. But why do that to him when each day is harder and harder, and I know he's only doing it for me? So we are going to spend the next few days having fun together, lots of cuddles, then let him fly free with one paw wrapped with my hair. RIP Skeeter(Mosquito 🦟)😥🙏🏼🌈💜

The only thing worse than putting down a 25-year-old horse is keeping a 25-year-old horse alive to continue suffering from multiple issues when the outcome's going to be the same eventually anyway. Much better to give her a final day of treats and love and let her go gently than to make her endure the pain for a few more months or years with increasingly poor quality of life.

I think it's sad that so many people think that 25 is "old" for a horse. That should be retirement age, and not hospice age. I've got a 23 year old Belgian cross mare that looks, acts, drives, and rides like she's 10. She's semi-retired, but only because I've got other horses that need schooling, too, and don't have time to ride or drive her every day.

I am so glad you are part of this rescue. It is extremely important to me that horses don't have to suffer or suffer being hauled from auctions. You are doing God's work in the helping of these horses especially if they need the last act of kindness. I can hardly wrap my mind around they way people bring those that are at the end of life to an auction. All of mine I have kept into old age the oldest passing at 36 yrs of age, I don't get how people throw animals away like trash once they have got their "use" out of them be it horses dogs or what ever species it may be. Bless you for doing this. I know it's hard on you. You love horses like the rest of us. Do what you have to do knowing God looks upon you with a thank you.

I'm old enough to have gone through crises with animals, and hindsight is that I waited too long. That mare looks tired. She looks sad. She's painful. She's old and you can not fix her withers and make her pain free. There is only one logical choice. Why drag it out, allow her to suffer when you already know how this ends? Every euthanasia is sad but it is necessary. No domesticated animal should suffer. As humans it is our responsibility to do what's right.

I completely agree with the decision to put Mandy down. I have the same strategy in mind for my 30+ mare. She has had many minor colics, but if she has a severe one, I will take this same route. Once they colic, they're likely to colic again. She's already past her normal lifespan...if it comes down to it, I will opt to send her out on a high note, and not in an emergency.

We’ve always made quality of life decisions for our pets…we’ve never kept an animal alive because it was emotionally easier for us. Each time it broke our hearts, but we’ve never regretted the decision. Thank you for making that same decision. As someone in constant severe pain I know what that’s like. As a human I choose to go on for those I love and who love me…that love compensates for my limited life. Animals live entirely in the moment which means they live entirely in pain, without the compensation and distractions I enjoy. We are going to have to say goodbye to our much love elderly Boxer who has the canine version of ALS. We will soon have to say goodbye as he’s losing the use of his back legs. We are grieving. I’ve watched people protract the lives of pets with cancer, etc., and that hurts a lot more. I understand and try not to judge but it doesn’t feel like an ethical choice to me.

I am becoming disturbed by how many horses are being put down. I get how you are a rescue and some of the more heroic saves I see on other sites are impossible. But, it is hard to see so many being put down. It must be hard on you as well.

I think that is kind of unfair. They are rescuing the ones that nobody else is. And they do what can be done and that includes giving them a peaceful end if necessary. You can’t compare with heroic saves in other sites, they are not taking these horses.

When I did dachshund rescue,for ten years A shelter in Boston MA would call me to pick up dogs,dachshunds with serious behavior problems that needed the last act I finally stopped taking dogs from them,they didn't want to deal with humane euthanasia Our percentage rate of euthanasia was 4% not bad I helped place foster and transport almost 400 dachshunds in ten years Very rewarding!!!! That's my biggest fear. My mare is 30+ and has had a number of minor colic incidents, all of which have been caught, and she was fine after some banamine. I'm afraid if it happens in the middle of the night, it will be another story. I saw a horse in severe colic, and it's something you can never unsee. I'm sorry about your mare.

@Terry, my girl was between 30-35, and the colic was caused by the land owner. He knew nothing about horses or other animals except dogs. He bought a cow for butchering (not a steer), but when it was taken for butchering, he had some oats left over. Threw them out for the birds, and my girl got into them. She was an easy keeper since alfalfa wasn't needed. Couldn't put her on free grass hay bales cause, even that caused laminitis. Didn't know till after the fact that he threw out the oats. Two vet visits later she had to be put down.

@@susankoehler2883 Oh, how awful! My girl was also the victm of an ignorant keeper. You would think that people running a therapeutic riding program would have horse experience, but you would be wrong. I never even thought to ask that question when I boarded her there. The guy decided in winter that she was fat, and cut her feed drastically. She dropped about 100 lbs., got diarrhea, and colicked. He never even mentioned the feed change to me until afterward. I rescued a bunch of starved horses, but this girl was not one of those. i hated that she had to learn what hunger was, after a whole life without that info. I pitched a fit and they fixed the feed situation, though it took her the rest of the next year to gain it back.

I'm so sorry you and your girl had to go through that. I haven't replaced my girl, but we now have our own property, and hubby's medical horse is a short walk down our driveway to her. Even when we had them at someone else's property, we took care of their feedings and went every day. That's what was so devastating about it. We had just seen her about 8 hours before she went down. We got her back up, and I spent hours there walking her. Couldn't even get her regular vet to her since he was out of town. What hurt the most is that I couldn't even bury her. She had to go to the landfill. The landowner had no equipment and couldn't get anyone to do it.

I like this channel although this Organization seem to be criticized a lot for putting down horses.I'm wondering if the criticism is due to peoples experiences or seeing how other rescuer organizations does things. A friend invited me to watch a rescue organization in Egypt where abuse of horses is horrifying. A Vet and his Team drive around searching for horses that are being abused. When he can he treat the animals and educate the Owner to proper care. However in most cases the horses are severely emaciated, injured, over worked and often time abandoned. He rescuse these horses, bring them to his clinic and treat them. It was amazing to see those emaciated horses weeks and months later with weight on them happy and enjoying the fields. I enjoy the way this rescue organization love on and interact with the horses.

I know a horse with broken withers that is not in pain. They fused at one point and she can be ridden lightly. Her owner is a vet and I’ve seen her X-rays.

I rescued a couple mares years ago that were really bad off. They got a few months of being spoiled before being PTS when walking became a challenge. One was drugged and being sold as a child’s horse. The cruelty of people amazes me sometimes. Another rescue mare kept throwing people, I later found out she had been impaled on a T Post years before(so she had pain). I gave her away as a broodmare(not to be ridden), and those people put their kid on her. These were well known trainers… He got injured and she got sent to slaughter. They stopped all contact with me, I had to find out from another person what happened. She didn’t deserve it. Now I’m afraid to ever rehome a horse again.

I'm not even halfway through this one, and know what y'all are going to do with her. I can at least hope y'all keep her around long enough for her to understand that not all humans suck, like maybe a week or two. You know, just long enough to know that some of us are okay. My heart breaks just thinking about what her life was like. Now, break's over, so back to work with my latest rescue (who happens to be a mean little yit, but still didn't deserve what he carries with him).

Awwww poor Miss Mandy..... She has had a rough trot hasnt she the poor love.... The worms are always a worry but as you say Dr Nancy, not always the 'cause', huh? They certainly can be, but not always. Colic is a pain in the backside and NOT good, her withers are NOT good - I winced seeing those xrays, and her dental wave/hook - meh - can be sorted as you say. Im totally with you Dr Nancy - if you were to get her through the colic - she could go down with it later but she would still have all these other issues. She is going to have the kindest thing you can do for her - a lovely feed and sleep eternally. Hopi - she was really nervy initially wasnt she? So she was basically totally untouched apart from being put through a chute in the wild and branded then shoved in a truck to auction? Poor kid. Shes landed in a good spot with you guys and with Kody working with her training wise... that looks quite good doesnt it? and Kody - that will be awesome work for head handling! :D You guys are AWESOME - I keep saying it - I absolutely love what you do for the horses and the way you explain everything - not just in the HPV videos but all of the sections that get put out for HPHS. I ALWAYS wanted to be a vet - and having lived in the middle of nowhere (in Australia that is NOT difficult when your nearest vet can be thousands of km or more - the furthest Ive lived from my horse vet was 800km - I was lucky - there were others closer who were not horse vets - or would treat under sufferance but you had to talk them through what was wrong and what treatment they needed, and to throw a colicy or injured horse in a float/trailer to go to the states capital city for an operating room was a 13 hour trip to give them a nice ride, or 10 hours for a rough as guts ride - not practical). I can stitch, if I dont have suture kits, its a case of just sterilising fishing line, and depending on the wound just one or two little ones or a slice the edges off so they do knit back together and stitch wide past the edges and put in large flat buttons so that pressure necrosis doesnt slice the fishing line through - shark line gets used on those types though. Anyhow - I'd love to be a vet. I am nearly 50 (in September) - and I know you are never too old to learn - however my health won't allow now :( Cannot very well be a large animal vet (I really have no interest in small animal - while I love them and of course would treat them if I was qualified - there are plenty of those in the area) when I am in a powerchair. :/ I'd love to do an instructors course also - but theyve changed it all now here and you have to do a ridden component. ARGH... Being in a chair these days does NOT change the fact that I rode all my life til I couldnt and have always instructed and was good at getting, in particular youngsters and beginners going and then through to some basics in a lot of different activities with them.
