20 years of Conrail’s split between Norfolk Southern and CSX is/was on June 1st, 1999. Here is our final part of a 3 part series. Trains in Charlton & Spencer, MA dominate the action. While some of this footage made it to our line of commercial programs, lots of trains are seen for the first time in this presentation. With little to no graffiti, even into 1999, many trains are shown in their entirety.
The show starts with a “lost footage” look at a train filmed in 1992. The train was seen as a “fixed position” shot in part one of this series. Apparently I was using two video cameras at the time, although I don’t remember the details! The shot in this part of the series is quite different, although it’s the same train.
Beyond that we move right into the mid 1990’s with a wide variety of power, including the C30-7A’s, SD40-2’s, B23-7’s, the new SD80MAC’s and much more.
Getting to the end of the Conrail era, the power stays quite varied. A bunch of trains filmed in Charlton & Spencer in March of 1999 would have never made it to this presentation as the Hi8 material had already reached the end of its life (I hated that format). Fortunately with some effort and a bit of dubbed audio, I was able to revive it.
Please subscribe to our channel if you haven’t already. There is plenty more to come from Conrail and other railroads throughout North America! Visit the BKVP website and see the 56 programs that we have produced in over 30 years! www.bkvp.com

Conrail did what it was designed to do, which was create a viable rail system out of the wreckage. They fixed the tracks, cultivated new customers, worked to get back some of the old, bought good, new locomotives ( they had 167 SD40-2s, not to mention old SD40s from Penn Central. ) We had Southern Railway and Seaboard System in Atlanta. I don't recall seeing Conrail engines down this way, or Chessie System until CSX was created. That intermodal train around 22:00 was bookin' it through there!
