Great video. For future side by side comparisons, it would be better to alternate between 2 and 6 speed though as the 2 speed had been used by your cameraman for multiple runs, so started with a lower battery charge. This explains why the 2 speed level 2 outperformed level 3: it was recharged and not going flat!

Fascinating statistics. For power levels 1 & 3, the 6 speed was significantly faster, despite a lower average power from the rider. I didn't expect that the gearing would have such an impact on efficiency.

I don't understand why there isn't a 3-speed. I don't think I ever use the derailleur on my 6-speed electric. I have wondered about having it taken off.
@brilliantbikes
@brilliantbikes 3 жыл бұрын
Thats a great question The Brompton "3-speed" uses a narrow ratio 3 speed hub The 6 speed - like yours - uses a wide ratio 3 speed hub in conjunction with a 2 speed derailleur - this fills in the big "jumps" between the hub gear ratios The person behind the camera always ran his manual Brompton using a "6-speed" wheel but with the 3 speed setup brilliantbikes.co.uk/brompton-rear-sprockets-and-spacers/425-brompton-bwr3-13-stack.html Brompton actually make it ... but don't offer it as a standard option ... who knows why?

I have an electric 6. I’d still recommend the 6 over the 2, even on the flat, as I think I’d be constantly spinning out in top gear on the 2 speed. (The 6 speed extends the gear ranges in both directions compared to the 2 speed) kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6vFeJVjibqNd5I

Thanks for the kind comment We're still discussing the pro's and con's of 2 vs 6! The lack of low gearing on the steep hill with no battery was the deciding factor choosing 6 vs 2 - so if the battery never dies - 2 would be OK for the climb - but on the flats - the 2 speed spins out a bit quickly and can't keep up with the 6 Stay safe and Happy New Year

@ianjenkinson3585
@ianjenkinson3585 3 жыл бұрын
The heart rate counts also explains the difference that 'fresh legs' made on the following day. As an aside, allow me to suggest that you label No Power as '0' and add the units after each individual number, its tricky to count across columns (to compare the numbers) that don't line up vertically. But well done and thank you
@brilliantbikes
@brilliantbikes 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the great question! We "think" that the power put to the front wheel is based on torque AND cadence It's a very small difference - and the cadence is slightly higher on the level 3 power We're going to do more tests - and after updating the firmware, to try and make more sense And maybe try a less extreme hill where we can keep more constants (e.g.speed, cadence ... anything to try and make it more scientific!) @@brilliantbikes I look forward to the next review. During the summer I tried both electric 2-Speed and 6-Speed Bromptons (albeit several weeks apart) on the hills near your shop (Staple Hill and Longcross Road) because they are more representative of the roads that I regularly use on the edge of the Peak District. My conclusion was that the 2-speed was a bit "under-powered' but the 6 speed 'over-powered'. During the summer I cycled the North Wales cycle path (Chester to Holyhead and return) on my 3-speed Brompton. There are plenty of places that electric boost would have been valuable. Its unfortunate that Brompton doesn't offer a 3-speed option, if they did I'd stop prevaricating and buy it immediately !

Well done for that effort👍 I think you have adequately answered my query from the last vid on the usability and versatility front😃 Go 6-speed! The reality for me would be that I am most tired at the end of a ride, precisely when the battery could be most depleted too. I doubt I would have the will-power to not use the electric assistance except for on the hills. Easy speed is addictive after all, as indeed I found on your demo 6-speed in Jan 2020. Sounds like an extra set of lights would be a good thing to have in the back-pack for a day out if cycling in the dark was a possible too. Oh dear, more weight...

@@brilliantbikes - As an aside, I am really pleased to see the number of folk getting out on electric-assist bikes these days. And by and large, these are people I judge would not be riding a bike without electric assistance. The nonchalance with which they pedal and maintain a comfortable and safe speed says it all really. I got a particular joy recently when I saw a couple in the Lake District (Cumbria, UK) with electric Bromptons 😃 For me, the standard Brompton has a unique appeal already, and without doubt has been my absolute favourite go-to bike in 2020, having covered over 5,000 trouble-free miles in the year. Adding electric could elevate the appeal somewhat for where assistance is desirable, particularly on busy roads with any inclines. There are times when I would just like to get somewhere with minimal effort and without the usual bike drawbacks of slow speed on hilly terrain. Let’s face it, to be able to still pop the electric bike under the stairs or in the boot/trunk of a car takes the overall appeal of the Brompton to another level. And without the chunky volume and weight of the usual crop of electric bikes I see around which when not in use must just get in the way, not be out of the way... Perhaps I am being picky, but wouldn’t it be nice if the electric Brompton could have the front carrier block bag range available to use. Now that would extend the appeal a few notches too for days out or shopping errands.

Great test and you seemed to have fun with it. I'm wondering if there is more data available on battery performance? A measure of % battery used or remaining after each climb would be helpful. Was wind speed/direction or which rides had lights on measured? Thanks for this detailed test. I haven't been able to get my BE out into the hills yet. My wife and I are sharing the bike and very happy with it.

Why'd you change helmet? Two different days?

Love your Brompton videos. At almost 95 kg I would like to know what kind of range I could get with a 6 speed Electric Brompton. I would probably be on power level 3 most of the time so even if I got 15 miles on a full charge I would be happy with that. I'm retired so a daily ride of 10-15 miles would be perfect.

You could just ride in power level 2 and use 3 when you really need extra assistance in places. Don't have to be using max assistance/max speed on them all the time. If you look at the quoted range from Brompton, I imagine it would be the lower figure realistically. The higher figure is more on minimal assistance and maximum input pedalling.

I honestly think you deserve to keep both bikes with that effort. Was the black helmet worn because it was lighter?

The conclusion made no sense. Of course the 6 speed is preferable when on power level 0, and going up hill, that's so obvious. The question is, would it much difference if they were electric 🤦‍♂

Why didn't she do it in power level 1,2 then 3, this video is mixed up. in fact she should have done it on 2 speed first then the 6 speed afterwards. On 1st power or 2nd and 3rd power level. I wouldn't have known which bike she was on if she didn't put the writing within the video, she need to present this video clearly and in a consistent manner. I'm baffled why she thought she didn't need a 6 speed bike, why pay all that money for any bike and you cannot get up a hill or even one that has a slight incline with suitable gearing.
