One cool thing is that Aaron Ehasz, the writer for the series said that in the planned season 4, when Azula got redeemed, she'd be overly apologetic and overly friendly like she was over compensating for her cold personality earlier. It would have been interesting to watch.

I think a redemption arc for Azula could start, if she had realised that Ozai had been manipulating her from the start. I feel like she was so close when Ozai crowned himself Phoenix king. She wanted to be with him, but he treated her like Zuko. What a wasted moment I think.
@Lex_Luthor7774 жыл бұрын
She should’ve killed Ozai that would’ve been a good plot twist
@morrisonscott11394 жыл бұрын
It's most likely that in that moment Ozai smoothly gives promises to Azula that once he's finished with the earth kingdom he'd return and they'd rule together as fire lord and phoenix king. so she was worried she was being treated like Zuko but Ozai eases her worries by assuring her that he wasn't but in reality he was planning too the whole time.
@witchrich23653 жыл бұрын
I'm actually thinking of Book 3 showing how she lies about Zuko being the one to kill Aang. However, Ozai seems to be pushing her buttons, as if he knows she's lying. Little did everyone know, Combustion Man was actually working with Ozai. This culminates in the Invasion where she looks at Zuko leaving the Fire Nation to pursue the Gaang. She doesn't shed tears, but we see that the last of her soul disappears.

My perspective of Azula really changed over the years. Since they don't mention it in the show, it's easy to forget she's only 14. She was an abuse victim by her father, but in a different way than Zuko. While Zuko received nothing but hate and coldness from Ozai, I think Azula learned her behavior as a way to avoid being treated like Zuko. She is his younger sister by two years, so there would already be an established relationship that she would see between Zuko & Ursa and Ozai. She learned early on that to avoid punishment and pain, she had to change her worldview to see love and compassion as weakness and that power and fear were what made you strong and accepted. In the first part of Sozin's Comet, when Azula gets upset that Ozai doesn't want her to come with him, she says "You can't treat me like Zuko!" She knows how Ozai treats Zuko and when she thinks that his actions towards her mirror how he treats Zuko in any way, she gets scared that she may become abused like he was. She spoke out of turn and Ozai snapped at her and said "Silence yourself!" For a split second, she shows genuine fear on her face. Deep down, she knows who her father is. She's juts developed this personality of fear and loathing as a shield to protect herself. When she gets betrayed by Mai and Ty Lee because of their love for someone else (Mai loves Zuko, and Ty Lee loves her friend), Azula's worldview gets exposed as a lie. She crumbles as a result and has no way to cope. Her history and where her character was left off in the show (and comics thus far) show that she was abused and molded to be the way she was. I think she is the most tragic character in the whole of ATLA.
@morrisonscott11395 жыл бұрын
It's highly possible that Ozai's the one who made Azula think that Ursa feared and despised Azula and it's possible that during Azula's crazy ideas from smoke and shadow actually came from Ozai and he instructed her to do these things while speaking to each other privately during the search. so her issues in both comic trilogies is because she still believes and trusts in Ozai. This highlights the ultimate difference between Ozai and Azula: Azula thinks she can be like her father and emulates him, his cruelty, and his philosophies...but never realizes why his ideas work for him and not her. Ozai's mentality only works because he has no friends, no love for his family at all (not even Azula) and thus, no problems eradicating people at the blink of an eye or dealing with a traitor in his ranks. Betrayal means nothing but a swift death for the traitor. Azula, on the other hand, cannot stomach betrayal at all and becomes unhinged quickly at being betrayed by anyone. In turn, this leads her to a life of paranoia, constantly thinking there's a knife to her back or an arrow aimed at her head. Azula's (admittedly twisted) love for her brother and (at the time) trust in her friends makes her a complete contradiction to what she professed she wants. the only person she loves and trusts is now just Ozai. There needs to be a comic trilogy (two if necessary) where these possibilities are true and Ozai destroys that trust. This would cause Azula to go further down in her madness as Aaron Ehasz wanted but Ozai's reasons for betraying Azula would contrast greatly to the reasons why Mai, Ty lee and Zuko decide to betray Azula. In there case, the reasons why Zuko betrays her is because Iroh showed him truths that Zuko couldn't see before and that spreading fear and hate are not the way to do things, why Mai then betrays Azula is because she trusts and loves Zuko more then she fears Azula and finally why Ty lee backstabbs Azula (kinda close to being literally) is that Azula threatened to kill Mai (that and maybe Mai inspired Ty lee to rely more on love then hate) Ozai does leave Azula behind and made the title "fire-lord" look obsolete but he still manipulates her into trusting in his wisdom (probably even gave the "we can rule together" speech at some point off screen) so when Ozai betrays her for real, it could be because she failed to kill Ursa while she had the chance, failing to keep the homeland safe from Zuko and Katara, confesses that Ozai lied about Ursa not loving Azula and thought of her as a monster, after Ozai escapes and plans to overthrow the world into chaos along side Zhi Bao, (Ergo creating the red lotus) and doesn't need Azula anymore, and tries to kill Azula as a result or all of the above. This betrayals would utterly destroy her, be conflicted with herself and truly reaches the bottom of her abyss but then Zuko comes in and puts everything he learned from Iroh to the test and he tells her that no matter how bad and messed up their family is, he'll never turn his back on her and would always be wise and loving to Azula alongside Ursa. And I think Aang would be the first to forgive her due to his belief that everyone deserves a second chance.
@morrisonscott11395 жыл бұрын
Here's how I think the redemtion arc would start: When Zuko visits Azula in the asylum, she taunts and mocks him for how weak he and the Avatar have become and predicts that Ozai will escape, help her escape and together they will have her revenge and finish what Sozin has started. Zuko calmly responds with the question, if Zuko and Aang were so weak, how come they manage to defeat them both? He also states that Ozai doesn't even care about Azula or anyone of his family that even if he does escape, He'll destroy whatever dignity Azula has left and leave her to die in the asylum. Azula scoffs at the ordeal. Later, Ozai manages to escape as Azula predicted. Ozai stands in front of Azula. She gloats as she knew he'd find away and says let's out of this dump. Ozai hestates and asks why should he. Confused, Azula told him so that she thought they'd finish what Sozin started and take vengeance on those who binded us. Ozai scowls and says he'll carry on that plan alone as he scorns her about how she had one job to do. just one. by failing it, she has brought disgrace and disrespect and will never gain honor and for that Ozai leaves her just as Zuko predicted. Desperate and devastated, Azula was blubbering like a baby as she begs him not to reject her like her mother and prove Zuko right. Ozai laughs at her squirming and up and leaves her to suffer and die. At that point, she has another episode, far worse then in agni kai with her screaming at the top of her lungs and a mix of fear, rage and sadness at there apex. Next week after no longer screaming, Azula is motivated with only rage, curses Ozai's name and vows to gain revenge on him only. I picture him getting stuff like Amon gets, creating gadgets to battle benders, has an army of chi blockers lus the new Ozai society thing. I'm still working on everything in between the beginning and the end but afterwards Aang becomes a guru and helps Azula open her chakaras, She and Zuko would go to the fire temple ruins and learn the real ways of fire bending and even speak to avatar roku and learn that there related and the real demise of Sozin, Azula, Suki, Katara and sokka aiding hakoda and the keyoshi warriors in battle and reconquer everything the firenation took and prevent the new ozai society from doing it again. Azula's cunning skills can prove very useful for the gaang. Azula teaching lightning bending, all that cool stuff. How I pictured a redeemed Azula is her at first having anger issues that are much worse then Zuko's and be as vengeful but now having tranquil fury like Kratos and her having reformed comedic personalities like Deadpool and Harley Quinn and funnier then both sokka and zuko.

Azula's redemption in season 4 could work since it be likely to be similar to that of Zuko's redemption during season 2. Several differences would be that Azula would probably appear in every episode, have the most screen time and every Azula appearance would involve her redemption and it would be the primary arc of each episode while whatever arcs introduced in book 4 would be more secondary. Azula's "crossroads of destiny" moment would probably come earlier but her path in the dark side would be shorter lived. In book 3 before his change of heart. he appeared in seven episodes: 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10 and 11. each one involved his character development. Azula may have shorter episode appearances. probably down to three or four episodes but with Azula being the primary focus as I said before, those episodes with her appearance would be next to one another (If you know what I mean and if that makes any sense) and each would involve her character development. Now during post redeemed Zuko, he had appearances up to six episodes before the 4-part finale, each with him making amends to team avatar for his atrocities against him. Post-redeemed Azula would have the same amount of episodes, maybe even a few more extra episodes, like with Zuko, they'd all be about Azula making amends to team avatar for her atrocities against them. This task would harder on Azula then it has for Zuko since it's well known that Azula has done a lot worse then Zuko but like Zuko, Azula won't give up on proving herself. While it may take longer for team avatar to forgive Azula then they have Zuko, they'd at least acknowledge the case of Zuko. How he'd fought tooth and nail to regain the trust of the gaang and he'd eventually succeeded and proven how much he'd changed. Post-redeemed Azula may struggle on how to be the new her due to the fact her entire life she's used machiavellian tendencies to gain companions up to the point her machiavelli persona was her primary identity. Remember how she struggled at the beach? her situation would be like that but would be up to eleven. How I imagine post-redeemed Azula is while she may keep her ruthless, cynical, and down right insane tendencies, she be like Bumi #1, Bumi #2, Asami and Varrick.

I've come up with some interesting storytelling starting point in the next comic trilogy focusing on Azula after her appearance in smoke and shadow, sorry it goes all over the place: After learning the location of Azula and that back when Azula was institutionalized and she was speaking to Ozai in private. It's revealed that Ozai was behind the Kemurikage attacks all along. Ozai told Azula that her destiny was to mold Zuko into a ruthless and fearmongering Fire Lord and that Ozai showed Azula way to get back to power was trough Zuko. Zuko decides to take up the mantle of the blue spirit once again and secretly journeys to ember islands where Azula was surprisingly residing all along. He brought with him the scroll that was delivered to him by Iroh somehow. Zuko gave Azula the scroll. Azula demanded to know who he is and what this is for, but the blue spirit said nothing left the scene without a trace. She reads: "You need to know the story of your great-grandfather's demise. It will reveal your own destiny. The fire sages keep the secret history in the Dragonbone Catacombs." Unable to make sense of the meaning of the message, a confused and annoyed Azula decided to investigate his great-grandfather's death and ventured down the Dragonbone Catacombs. He found and read the final testament of Fire Lord Sozin which details about his youth, errors, and regrets. In particular, he wrote about his friend, Avatar Roku, he expanded upon their childhood friendship, their separation, later quarrels, and eventually Roku's death. When Azula read the part where Sozin left Roku to die, it reminded her of the time Mai and Ty lee left her but Sozin's reasons for doing the same contract to why Mai and Ty lee left her and this began to eat at her once again. Sozin continued with how he started the century-long war by decimating the air nomads in hopes the avatar would die with them. However, at the end of his memoirs, Sozin was still alive and in the end he kept searching for the avatar. Confused again, Azula snuck into Zuko's bed chambers and confronted Zuko, outraged, and accusing him of sending Azula messages telling her that the scroll told her little more than what she already knew. Zuko calmly stated that he was referring to there mother's grandfather, Avatar Roku. Azula is over come with shock and horror, even more so then Zuko after he learned about Roku. Zuko told Azula good and evil were always fighting inside Azula for it was her nature just like his. But he said that the bright side was that he and Azula could restore honor to the Fire Nation and bring about peace together and that she did not need to manipulate him into being a better ruler. Zuko went back to bed, speechless and in awe, Azula begins to depart from his room and Zuko said. "Sleep well Azula."

She is redeemed canonically. I got Avatar cookbook which is written in universe. Azula does have an entry, and the book does show Azula and Mai being friends, which does show that Azula and Mai reconciled at some point, and from this logically it is obvious with team avatar. Otherwise she would not have an entry in the cookbook. The book canonically takes place after the comic imbalance. It is just not known when exactly. I have a sense it takes place sometime between 105 AG and 110 AG. Somehow it feels the cookbook was written before team Avatar start having kids. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Only now what is missing is how Azula became better person. Hopefully we will get the story soon.
@th3azscorpio5 жыл бұрын
The best part about Azula, is that while she can be redeemed, she chooses not to redeem herself; instead, clinging to her pride. It's better that Azula wasn't redeemed in the context of the story. Azula is like Cersei. Even if stripped of everything, she would learn nothing from her plight. She would instead blame others, and her insanity and rage would only burn stronger. However unlike Cersei, The only reason I believe she can be redeemed is because she's still young enough to have her mind reprogrammed.
@morrisonscott11395 жыл бұрын
Her redemption rejection could be due to that she still believes and trusts and her father Ozai and thinks that Ozai cares about her, She would still have to learn the hard way that is not true and Ozai only cares for himself. At this point there would have to be a scene where Ozai (along with the entire new Ozai society including her new female partners) truly and brutally betrays and forsaken Azula and leaves her alone to die This betrayal would destroy her and would reach her lowest point but is also conflicted on what's right and wrong because the reasons for this new betrayal differs greatly on why Mai, Ty Lee and Zuko decide to betray her. but even then Zuko still comes in and gives her unconditional compassion like Aaron Ehasz wanted and later Ursa does the same thing but this time Azula actually takes that to heart.

I love the Cersei parallel and I agree
@sorcerersapprentice4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. I think it makes more sense for her not to be redeemed. She made her choices, and is too far gone to really see the error of her ways, being like Cersei in that regard. Yes, it's tragic since she's a kid, but that's the whole point of tragedies. They make you long for what could of been, and when the character has their downfall due to their tragic flaw, it really hits you. Unfortunately, in a lot of real life abuse situations like that, one sibling might put another sibling under the bus to get better treatment. She just works better as Zuko's foil and what he could've became if he never had Iroh in his life. Plus, I _really_ don't like the idea that Zuko, who is someone who Azula tormented for years is forced to become her therapist in that situation. Iroh helping out Zuko is one thing, but doing that to someone who hurt you is another thing completely.

I believe Azula and Sokka get together. The chemistry is there (DoBS) and there's potential. She would tease him and poke fun cuz it was funny, but I believe she would also respect and value his strategic and battle skills since she could relate and vice versa. Sokka would grow on her, but I feel like it would be a slowburn from enemies to friends to lovers. Some fics make her Zuko's advisor and if this arc was executed correctly, then she would really redeem herself by helping lead her country. In The Search, she gets everyone to let their guard down a little bit and then turns on them. A huge part of Zuko's arc is that he was kind hearted as a child, but hardened by his circumstances. Azula’s redemption arc for a proposed season 4 Assume length is about 21 episodes Episodes 1-3 is Zuko (other characters perhaps but mainly Zuko) reaching out to her in her cell but she is unreceptive. Episode 4 Zuko tries talking to her about some big private stuff and she has a big breakdown. Zuko considers giving up but talks to Iroh. Iroh finds a key feature in her breakdown to suggest guilt/understanding her psychosis. Episode 5 Zuko and Iroh approach her and manage to hold a conversation and she begins to heal. They begin to start taking small chances with her and gradually allowing her freedom. Episode 6-8 Azula is granted a room in the palace and begins to return to normal life. She’s showing improvement but also reasserting negative parts of her personality again. As she has highs, she also experiences lows. Episode 9 Azula has a key confrontation with Zuko that leads to her seeking out Ozai without their knowledge. She seems receptive to his ideas but shows key hesitation and reluctance. Episode 10 Azula meets her mother at Zuko’s behest and the meeting goes relatively smooth until her mother expresses her love. Azula snaps and runs away. Ozai’s plan with his loyalist society bears fruit and a coup is launched. Azula has the option to join or halt them and joins them harming her mother. Two options here: 1. Ozai’s plan succeeds for a few episodes where Azula spends time with him but finds she can’t return to her previous nature and soon confronts him or runs away. 2. Ozai’s plan fails and Azula begs forgiveness from both Ozai and the good guys but receives none. She hits rock bottom and has her most devastating breakdown and runs away. Episode 11 (or later depending on option) has Azula on the run amongst the ‘commoners’ and she gradually learns humility from these people. Zuko finds her at the request of Iroh and helps her crisis. Episodes 12-15 has her learning and gradually reforming. Perhaps in 15 she makes a key good decision. Episodes 16-20 have her earning the good guys trust and learning valuable lessons. Functions like Zukos day trips in book 3. Episode 21 (Finale) brings all her development to light as she battles the new Ozai society and decides the outcome. She sides with good despite being made a good offer. She also gets to confront Ozai about his abuse and gets closure with Zuko (he joins her in her confrontation at her invitation). Alternative proposal is once Azula goes n the run, she adopts a new identity. She gets taken in by a ‘rescue parent’ and learns from them. She then starts helping out key good guys without them knowing her true identity.

Personally If I were going to write a redemption arc for Azula after season 3, I'd have to go with a dark redemption or sacrificial architype only because of just how far she has fallen thematically. This basically means that for Azula to be redeemed, she may have to sacrifice her life for a greater good. I haven't read any of the comics, so I can't really comment on them or build on them. In classical storytelling, characters aren't defined as being good or bad, and transitions between those extremes can occur frequently by circumstance, or by will. Generally the fall to the dark side is based on the character being unable to free themselves from their own darker nature. For Azula, I'd largely attribute this to be her sadism. Her delight in other's ( even animals ) suffering is the catalyst that ends up causing Azula to see herself as a monster, and monsters of course are to be feared. The strive for perfectionism helps to make her a formidable antagonist, but also could be seen as Azula's attempt to capture the approval of her father. We do see other signs that Azula wants to find love, but these fail.. again largely due to her being unable to free herself from her own darker nature. The path from dark to light is always based on love. Since the show is heavily influenced by eastern philosophy even going so far as teaching the audience about opening Chakras, it can be used as template to how Azula's redemption might take place. This would mean that we'd see Azula having to admit and confront her fears, guilt, shame, and grief at the very least in order to allow her to be open to love. That's a lot of ground to cover. Zuko's redemption arc took 3 seasons for it to feel natural and weighted, and I think that you'd need the same or more to tell a redemption story for Azula.

Azula, an anxious 14 year old. Ah, yes, what anxious 14 year old doesn't have hallucinations of the mother, who abandoned her, and her family?
