This reminds me of the endless 1980s night clubs dancing. Especially as a student. The smell of the dry ice 'smoke', the green lasers, the feeling of fear going to chat up a girl, the alcohol, the cigarette smoke, the level of loud music, and the way the dancing crowd would move en masse. Such an amazing time, we just never realised it, we thought it would last for ever....

I remember that video! That's when I was growing up. A lot of the bands from the 80s were gay or had gay members. We all knew what some of the songs "meant... We actually challenged each other to REALLY listen to not just the beat, but the "message". back then, people knew who was gay and who was straight. We just didn't make a big deal out if it and all treated each other the same. I sure do miss those days.

I grew up in the 1970's and 80's in a small town in the Canadian prairies. I knew gay people, but no one could ever reveal that aspect of their life. I had an older brother who was autistic and everyone was so cruel to him, bullying him constantly. The one person who stook up for him was the principal of the elementary school. My parents knew the principal was gay, and he was allowed to be himself in our home. He could empathize with my brother. Neither was considered normal. Both were hated. Neither did anything to deserve it. Neither understood the hatred they faced. They felt it every day. The principal's partner died suddenly one day, and that poor man had to grieve in silence and without showing emotion. Eventually he left our town, never to return, his heart broken in half. This song always reminds me of him.

@@Lotusfan11it’s not a big deal for the people that are gay, bi, etc. but saying “it’s not a big deal” when people literally tense up or cringe at a gay person is an understatement. Majority of people in the lgbtq community are just here, they just want to be. Yet, people who can’t even be a decent human being and just bypass it are the ones who make it such a big deal. Going as far as to harm/harass the person simply for who they like. I’m happy that there are people like you that don’t care, but trust and believe there are many people out there who aren’t as carefree as you and go to the extreme.

When this song came out there was no Internet or anything, I didnt know the video was a young guy on a train. But I remember listening to this song on my Sony Walkman, on the train to London, on my own for the first time to go and see if I coukd find any other gay people, go to a gay bar for the first time and discover myself. I was terrified but excited. Songs like this helped me believe, and cope. It was the beginning of my gay life and an amazing adventure. Hearing this song still takes me back to thst train journey to London, I even remember which seat I had. Now I feel my journey is coming to an end. And I'm so sad about it. I wish I could do it all again. Now living with hiv, fighting cancer, still afraid of being alone, I still love this song and the memories it evokes.

This was such an important song at the time and should never be forgotten. I play an acoustic guitar version at my own gigs and it's one of my favourites to perform.

Going from left to right but not sitting in moving direction. From the first seconds, this video makes the history. Incredibly well done. I saw it at 14 without paying attention. Now, I am 52 ans I realize how it was visionary.

This song the melody and the way it sounds just always does something to me like the feeling of nostalgia years gone by,or the feeling i shud be on a journey somewhere of life travelling on a train or plane or a faraway place or just watching the sunset pondering life and what it will bring xx anyone else feel this when this song is playing or is it just me xx🎶😌🤔🎵

This song that saw me leaving my small town and heading for the big city in the 80s - It was probably the most important song in my life for it still makes me very emotional - It was a call to arms for so many as it inspired them to become whoever they needed to be in a world that could be very cruel. Jimmy is the only member of Bronski Beat still alive as the other two band members are longer with us as both their lives were cut short through illness.

I really hope times have changed, I'd be distraught if i ever thought my son had to leave home just because he was gay. I know I don't have an issue with it at all. I really like this song but blimey does it make me sad.
