This reminds me of the endless 1980s night clubs dancing. Especially as a student. The smell of the dry ice 'smoke', the green lasers, the feeling of fear going to chat up a girl, the alcohol, the cigarette smoke, the level of loud music, and the way the dancing crowd would move en masse. Such an amazing time, we just never realised it, we thought it would last for ever....

I grew up in the 1970's and 80's in a small town in the Canadian prairies. I knew gay people, but no one could ever reveal that aspect of their life. I had an older brother who was autistic and everyone was so cruel to him, bullying him constantly. The one person who stook up for him was the principal of the elementary school. My parents knew the principal was gay, and he was allowed to be himself in our home. He could empathize with my brother. Neither was considered normal. Both were hated. Neither did anything to deserve it. Neither understood the hatred they faced. They felt it every day. The principal's partner died suddenly one day, and that poor man had to grieve in silence and without showing emotion. Eventually he left our town, never to return, his heart broken in half. This song always reminds me of him.

@@Lotusfan11it’s not a big deal for the people that are gay, bi, etc. but saying “it’s not a big deal” when people literally tense up or cringe at a gay person is an understatement. Majority of people in the lgbtq community are just here, they just want to be. Yet, people who can’t even be a decent human being and just bypass it are the ones who make it such a big deal. Going as far as to harm/harass the person simply for who they like. I’m happy that there are people like you that don’t care, but trust and believe there are many people out there who aren’t as carefree as you and go to the extreme.

I remember that video! That's when I was growing up. A lot of the bands from the 80s were gay or had gay members. We all knew what some of the songs "meant... We actually challenged each other to REALLY listen to not just the beat, but the "message". back then, people knew who was gay and who was straight. We just didn't make a big deal out if it and all treated each other the same. I sure do miss those days.

I asked a special version, the staff member gave me a special 12” pressed vinyl record that is in the shape of the band name Bronski Beat.. But I remember listening to this song on my Sony Walkman, on the train to London, on my own for the first time to go and see if I coukd find any other gay people, go to a gay bar for the first time and discover myself. I was terrified but excited. Songs like this helped me believe, and cope. It was the beginning of my gay life and an amazing adventure. Hearing this song still takes me back to thst train journey to London, I even remember which seat I had. Now I feel my journey is coming to an end. And I'm so sad about it. I wish I could do it all again. Now living with hiv, fighting cancer, still afraid of being alone, I still love this song and the memories it evokes.

I used to be a tutor at a university. We had just two requirements, you had to complete each of the three assignments and get at least 30% in the exam in the paper I taught.. The 2nd assignment was due two weeks after first semester break. For some reason, students that were gay went home during the semester break, and many decided thats the time they would come out to parents. It invariably went really badly. I always remember collating those that had handed in the second assignment and 30% were missing. Some would apply for extension after student counseling. It was always nearly all the same reason - parents disowned them, cutting off money, and family support. Some parents had even bought a house close to university. In one case the girl was kicked out and the house sold. She was never to make contact with the family again. Student counseling couldn't get her back on track. I had to mark her DNC(did not complete). I wonder to this day, 20 years later, what happened to her. I think about that girl every time I see, or hear, this song.

Lyrics : You leave in the morning With everything you own In a little black case Alone on a platform The wind and the rain On a sad and lonely face Mother will never understand Why you had to leave But the answers you seek Will never be found at home The love that you need Will never be found at home Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away Pushed around and kicked around Always a lonely boy You were the one That they'd talk about around town As they put you down And as hard as they would try They'd hurt to make you cry But you never cried to them Just to your soul No you never cried to them Just to your soul Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away Cry, boy, cry You leave in the morning With everything you own In a little black case Alone on a platform The wind and the rain On a sad and lonely face Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away

As a young person, I didn’t appreciate how unique, brave & original Jimmy Somerville was. He was the countertenor of counterculture 80s club music & his songs had powerful messages behind them (like this one re: being different & rejected). I wish I’d understood this more in my teens but, as they say, “youth is wasted in the young.” A few more years, a lot more lines & life experience, unfortunately, are what we need to “get it.” If only we could be both cute & wise, alas, it seldom works that way.

"Smalltown Boy" is a popular song by the British synth-pop band Bronski Beat. It was released in 1984 as the lead single from their debut album "The Age of Consent." "Smalltown Boy" is characterized by its powerful and poignant lyrics, soulful vocals, and infectious synth melodies. The song addresses themes of alienation, identity, and the struggles faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in a small town environment. It conveys a sense of isolation and the longing for acceptance and understanding. The track's emotive vocals by lead singer Jimmy Somerville, coupled with the catchy synth-pop sound, struck a chord with listeners. The song's electronic beats and melodic hooks made it an instant hit, resonating with audiences across the globe. "Smalltown Boy" received critical acclaim for its honest portrayal of LGBTQ+ experiences and its ability to connect with a wide audience. It became an anthem for the gay community, shining a light on the challenges and triumphs of queer individuals. The song's music video, directed by Bernard Rose, added to its impact. The video tells the story of a young man grappling with his identity and his eventual escape from his small town. It became iconic for its powerful imagery and representation of LGBTQ+ struggles. "Smalltown Boy" remains a classic in the synth-pop genre and a standout song in Bronski Beat's discography. Its enduring popularity is a testament to its emotional resonance, catchy melodies, and its role in raising awareness of LGBTQ+ issues.

The song is captivating and eloquent, and describes the feeling of strong alienation, of being a foreign body in this world. And finally, you don't have to be gay to understand this great song, you just have to be an outlaw or an outsider

what a song... both lyrics and melody - sad and uplifting at the same time - they invoke an emotion but also tell a story. and the video totally fits and is also amazingly well done - down to earth visual language helps one to identify with characters, and it tells a whole (back)story in under 5 minutes. sometimes it all just comes together.

Every time I hear this song it reminds me of something from the past. His name was Joey and this is his story. Back in 1989 I met a man named Joey in an AIDS hospice where my girlfriend at the time worked. Over the course of time Joey's life became tragic. When with his family he was always "Uncle Joey" and his nieces and nephews adored him as he did them. His siblings always thought the best of him. Joey knew that he would probably never marry and children were definitely out of the question so being with his family was important to him and gave him something stable in his life. Joey was diagnosed with HIV in September of 1988. He might have been able to hide it but Joey decided that he had to be upfront with his brothers and sisters as to his condition. So one November evening he called them and arranged to have a Family meeting with them. Upon hearing the news, his siblings were initially sympathetic, supportive, and understanding and he thought things were going to be alright. Joey spent a great deal of time in the next month or so picking out Christmas gifts for all of his family members. About December 15th he phoned his sister to find out whos home they were going to for Christmas. There was a pregnant pause and then his sister told him that he was not to come around to anyone's home ever again. She explained they had had a meeting they all agreed that they didn't want a sick gay man around their children so he was persona non grata and he was no longer welcome with any one of them. Needless to say, Joey was heartbroken. In addition to being sick, his anchor in life had now been taken away. He was now adrift and rudderless. Even though the emotional trauma that he was experiencing was painful to say the least, Joey still made it a point to have all of the gifts he had bought and wrapped couriered to his brothers home. They were delivered back to his apartment the following day unopened, no note, no letter. In late January of 1989 joey's doctor informed him that he had gone to full blown AIDS. Although it was never confirmed many thought that the cause was how he felt emotionally after he had been crushed by the only people he cared about. Joey went downhill very fast after that. When I met him in August of 1989 he was nothing but skin and bones and he seldom left his room in the hospice. Joey and I would sit in his room in the dark and have conversations on every topic imaginable and he became a great friend to me. His views on life were a credit to him all things being considered. He bore his lot in life like a man and never complained. Joey died peacefully in his sleep just before Christmas that year. There were 11 people at his funeral and not one of them was a relative, just other people and patients who knew him from the AIDS Hospice. When ever I hear this song I always think back to that year and thank the powers that be for my good fortune in life. I don't believe in God and the afterlife. For me when you die all that is left is a carcass, a bunch of crap that no one wants, and the memories that those who knew you have. But I have to be a bit of a hypocrite when it comes to Joey. I sincerely hope that he went on to a better place where no one could ever hurt him again.

Very sad and poignant. As beautiful as the 80s may have been in retrospect, dealing with HIV and AIDS patients was cruel. Very tragic how his family treated him. Luckily he still had people around him who cared about him.
