March 11, 2022 - This adult male red-tailed hawk is one of the resident pair at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. I saw him swoop down and grab this squirrel that was sitting on the lawn.

I saw one today at the park trying to do the same thing, I thought I was trippin 'cause I never seen a hawk in the Bronx. I saw an owl a couple weeks ago too.

Now, more than ever there are red-tailed hawks all over the five boroughs. Parks are great places to see them hunting.

Wow it's really impressive how easily it ripped that limb off. That's insane.

Ive noticed with every predatory bird their legs are lenthy which I assume is to be able to snatch prey at odd angles and distances. These birds are such exceptional hunter killers.

Absolutely love it, just one less tree rat that can get in my attic, like before. Looked very yummy for the hawk - nothing beats fresh squirrel :)

#5👍🤔Knowing the censorship by KZbin the killing was edited out. Squirrel is a large rodent with a very nasty bite. This hawk must have had it's work cut out for it to catch and kill this rodent without injuries. Great pictures of a beautiful Red Tail!!

No ways. Never underestimate the power of raptors. Did you know that the Goshawk ( not the one in the picture) catches rabbits and hares, and they are much bigger than squirrels? What about the Golden eagle, catching coyotes and foxes? The Martial eagle catches rock monitor lizards, aka leguans. Eagles are bigger than hawks, but the Goshawk, the one I started with, is about the same size with the Bronx hawk, if not smaller.

Kirsten. Actually, the killing wasn't edited out. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get to the hawk at the moment of contact. I was walking down a path was off when it happened so there wasn't anything to edit out. I've never gotten a strike against me from KZbin for wildlife violence. lol! Yes, it is a beautiful red tail. This is one of the four adults that are currently calling the Botanical Garden their home.

The colors of the predator and prey are so much the same, one would mistake one as the continuation of the other. Maybe that shows they were meant to eventually end this way; one in the stomach of another.

I wonder why he started with the elbow? There are more tastier parts.

Maybe he prefers dark meat.
