jim u summed it up perfectly as an old magic player, we used to have great answers and control was a real thing, but the modern trend in magic now is to make the threats better than the removal, and i think that is actually the way you make the game more fun because it rewards players for being proactive which lead to more interesting games than "opp does nothing for 12 turns except kill all my stuff then they kill me wtih 1/1 tokens" or whatever
@James-ov8pg8 ай бұрын
As someone who started around Shadows of Innistrad and is a huge fan of control, I see what you're saying. However, control when I started playing is afaik, very engaging and different from old school, "draw, go" style control. I actually lost interest in Magic for a while because it was all about casting the biggest bomb or most broken card and not so much of the mental game that I love about playing control (and poker). Trying to figure out what your op is doing (or trying to hide what you're doing) without it just being in your face, smacking you down with ETBs and haste is a beautiful and necessary aspect of magic imo. Different play styles and radically different deck building should be encouraged and supported.

hell yeah let's go I think it's worth paying attention to how many Detectives you incidentally pick up. Thinking Cap is extremely good if you have a 1 mana equip target, and there's a LOT of dudes that happen to be detectives. Jim completely ignored like three of them in the draft and I think one was absolutely playable here.
@FlourescentPotato8 ай бұрын
Right, felt like Jim was railroading / dismissing a lot of this draft out of hand with some quick decisions.
@DrCat-vq6yo8 ай бұрын
The reason I wanted him to pick up one or two of the Thinking Caps he kept passing without discussion is that he picked up an Agency Outfitter which he immediately put in the sideboard - and then passed EVERY Magnifying Glass and eveny Thinking Cap without any consideration at all. He easily could have had the set of three, which seems like it could quite easily make Agency Outfitter a solid playable. And he could have used VERY late picks and not given up much of anything to get them.
@MarvelOfRain8 ай бұрын
@@DrCat-vq6yo I think the Outfitter wasn't what the deck needed given the curve, power level and number of detectives. But I agree he should have taken at least one Glass to have the option. They were free picks. In the end the Outfiter probably still is too slow for this. He fits better as a top end of an aggressive deck IMO.
@MarvelOfRain8 ай бұрын
21:00 - note that this is only partially correct. The rule only makes it so you cannot beat a 2/2 before 5 mana, but there are several x/2 cards that can trade with a 3/3 in combat. There is also a chance their card will get them some extra value on top of the trade. Notable examples are: Dog Walker, Gadget Technician, Museum Nightwatch and Shady Informant. All of these can kill a 3/3 and trading your morph for them can be a blowout. I would say unless your creature is awful (for example a disguise creature you can't flip for several turns) it is still not worth blocking their disguise creature if they swing into you.

Branch of Vitu-Ghazi, if it's face down as a 2/2, in combat (let's say it blocks), before damage is dealt you flip it over and it becomes a land. That must take it out of combat right? It would not suffer the damage from the attacking creature it blocked as a land right?
@SimplySimonLP8 ай бұрын
Even if it receieved the damage, it's now a land - nothing would happen to it, it can't get dealt more damage than its toughness because it doesn't have a toughness anymore

Having watched the episode now, I think Jim is a bit stuck on always getting the absolute maximum value out of cards, especially Steamcore Scholar. He almost didn't take it despite it being a ridiculous bomb because "oh what if I don't want to discard two cards". Like, think about it this way: if you really have absolutely nothing in your hand you want to discard AND draw two insane spells, then it's basically like a 3 mana 2/2 vigilance mill two and you just happened to mill two great cards. Bad luck but it happens, and this is in a format where you don't mind having high-cost spells in your GY, so it might even be beneficial down the line. However, that's not what it says, it says, absolute baseline, etb LOOT two (not mill). You cannot tell me that ever time you cast it, you have two completely unbelievably insane spells in your hand that you NEVER want to lose and you'll ALWAYS draw two cards that you ALSO want to cast. In fact, there's good evidence against that: in pretty much every game except the super long last one, Jim ended the game with a bunch of spells in hand. You literally cannot cast every spell in modern Limited if you deck works well because you just win or lose before that happens. Especially in a format where you might just end up pumping 8 mana into a morph + flip and not, in fact, cast two spells instead of the flip. So once again, just discard the stuff you don't need right now. It's fine. And finally, it doesn't say loot two, it says draw two and discard a spell or flier. Jim has done it twice already, discarded a whatever combat trick that didn't help him. His opp showed him that it was better for them to discard the 3/3 flier and keep two other spells. Jim said "oh they discarded that, their hand must be insane" like yeah, they just drew two cards that, together, were more valuable than said flier. Of course the hand is insane, the Scholar made it that way. Basically what I'm saying is, in that one game where Jim couldn't cast the Vein Ripper but had a Scholar in hand, and also the 2/1 artifact creature, just slam the Scholar, draw towards the Swamp you need, and discard WHATEVER else you draw (hell, it might be an Island!) and that useless 2/1. Jim was so afraid of having to discard spells that he didn't want to add an amazing creature to the board + set up his instantly game winning bomb.
