Relatable episode. This happens to everyone sometimes
@davidwitt5585Ай бұрын
I do think it was a tougher pool than usual but I also feel like we have subpar assessments early on in packs. It's frequently felt like the drafts have been "off the rails" like 5 picks in....and then we are lamenting that "there just aren't any good cards". I guess I'll chalk that up to these drafts being several weeks ago by the time they hit KZbin...but I think some of the generic bread and butter commons in each color get shrugged off as "not being high picks" such as Helpful Hunter, Burglar Rats, Strix Lookout, etc.
@thelifedragon2156Ай бұрын
yeah, tough seat and better card assessments would help a bit, but i think this one was more a case not following good drafting heuristics. not committing to your colors/game plan/picks and pivoting way too late in the draft/pivoting multiple times/pivoting into too many colors. just basic drafting fundamentals not being followed really killed this one.
@bjg678Ай бұрын

@garrettbaringer3722Ай бұрын
yeah tough draft. white was the lane in pack 1 but it wasn't an obviously open lane. just 1 card to choose each pick.
@moocowp4970Ай бұрын
I sort of agree it wasn't super obviously open (although the rallier wheeling was a good sign), but I also think the white card was the best card in each pick too (with Kiora being an exception and black being the occasional second best), so it didn't make much sense for him to be thinking sultai or picking the green or black cards when there were better white cards to take.
@BobCain2006Ай бұрын
Jim this is separates you from everybody else. You show the good and the bad. I don't think, given the packs you were given, there was a "good" deck to be had. Glad to this happens to other people and not just me. Keep up the good work!
@RococoricoАй бұрын
Let's shake it off and pull it together. No one expects expert drafting and plays while streaming live but this felt like some sort of tunnel vision. The packs weren't even that bad, with good cards repeatedly tabling even, but the picks got progressively worse. We can still hit the under!

After this series I'd be so interested in your opinion on draft now with Play boosters compared to drafts with the old draft boosters. We're basically one year (four sets + a core set) into the new "format" and it seems like significantly different experience.
@johnblue2270Ай бұрын
Hindsight is hindsight, but there was a nasty Boros deck in there. Tons of prideful parents, claws out, 1 heroic reinforcement.
@RococoricoАй бұрын
Pack 1 already had Parents and Claws Out tabling, which was surprising since White is supposedly over drafted. I would've leaned towards Blue White, probably, and cry at the late Reinforcements.

Nonbeliever, mostly because you said it was rough. I have had drafts where I am still floundering in pack 2 and I never come back from that.
@grimey217Ай бұрын
Rough packs. I'm with you. My biggest beef with the set so far in draft, is way too often you get mediocre or BAD packs, then you get paired against people with bomb rares and damn near precon decks, and you just get crushed. The wide range of the power levels in cards is REALLY obvious on this set. Just a huge spread of low power and high power cards. Really wish we could have pods on arena
@deadNdivine12Ай бұрын
Non-believer damn those were rough even I have no clue what you should have pivoted to... Damn 2-3 kinda deck.... Got to the end man that was very rough.

The only success I’ve had with blue/green was a deck that had two elvish retriever and two run away together
@JazzKaioshinАй бұрын
It's reassuring to know that even pros have drafts like this sometimes, hard luck Jim. IMO the better P1P2 was Strix Lookout, drawing and filtering is so important in this format, plus it helps enable threshold for Kiora. You can then look to move into one of the Ux decks, probably UB control based on the other potential picks in P1. Elvish Archdruid was a trap 😅
@EmptyShadowАй бұрын
This feels like how all my drafts go, lol. It's good to know that even a pro level player has the same thing happen to them on occasion. Watched this one live on stream and as soon as he made the guarantee I was like "uh oh." My heart goes out to you on this one Jim. Glad you didn't go 0-3 at least. You've earned my like and follow the hard way.

Pausing last pick pack 1. White was solid the entire time. Taking the elf with so little elves in the set seemed worse than taking any white card. Plus, blue white is a solid color pairing. Edit. Then the pack 2 rare!

Hey Jim! Loving the content. I'm a beginner programmer, and I was wondering if you'd be interested in an overlay that blocks all the green cards in foundations packs. Lemme know if you'd be interested! \s In all seriousness, these drafts just suck to participate in. Wish you best of luck for the games but... definitely a nonbeliever here.

Archdruid is not a good card and maybe not a good plan. But it was a plan (at least to have fun). But then pick the random b/g land makes no sense with Giant in the same pack, which fits perfectly to the Archdruid plan... Of course picking Helpful Hunter and stay w/u or w/x was the best plan I think
@moocowp4970Ай бұрын
After pack 1 I would have been pretty much into White-Black, considering whether to splash Blue. I don't know what you're thinking considering any of those shitty green cards over Helpful Hunter, Llanowar Elves is a decent card sure but Helpful Hunter is just great in every variation of that card ever (and I think it's like top 50-60 cards in the set right?) . The rest of the pack you then get decent enough white and black cards.
@moocowp4970Ай бұрын
But I guess Jim promised Diamond THIS EPISODE so it must be a good deck and I just don't understand it
@FrankDTank16Ай бұрын
When you third picked eaten alive over two decent blue cards I instantly became a non-believer. Just because a color is the "worst" of a set doesn't mean you can't get wins with it. You could've had a few brineborn cutthroats and this deck would've been great.
@dice_dragon23Ай бұрын
Non-believer. I think Archdruid and the lands picks so early over other speculative cards was a mistake, since I’d rather speculate on playable rather than lands that might not end up even being the colours I’m in, and archdruid in a set with limited elves is bad - which you said! The lookout perfectly matches your first pick to enable threshold as a second pick. Yeah, some draft pods can have bad packs. But I think you need to commit earlier and force a direction rather than seeing how things unfold - act, don’t react.
@salomar77Ай бұрын
P1P2 helpful hunter? And you would have a great P2P1 with Kykar? White seemed very open in pack 1 and it seemed you completely ignored it. No idea why. Blue/white is also a strong combination...

Nonbeliever. Avoiding a bunch of good white in pack 1 to pick up middling stuff in other colors, then avoiding good black and green in pack 2 to pick up miscellaneous white cards... definitely not the route to success. This is, admittedly, one reason I don't like Foundations - lots of garbage or filler cards. That said, I think there were several solid decks available here, but they required finding a bit of focus and going with a game plan. The Helpful Hunter would have been a totally fine pick 2 and then you can lean into some variety of Esper ETB/sacrifice deck. Or go all-in on the elf deck, or the mill/zombify theme. I do also think this draft had a lot of moments of taking shiny rares that didn't offer all that much over really solid playables that were also much more versatile. Decks with Helpful Hunters and Infernal Vessels will basically always find those cards useful. The elf druid, Kykar, the arcane epiphany - they all have stricter mana costs and pretty specific decks they want to be in, and taking a bunch of picks like that, you either end up not playing them, or end up cramming a bunch of non-synergistic cards together and seeing what happens.

@thelifedragon2156Ай бұрын
ok, this was a tough seat but boy did you not help the situation. you were trying way to hard to make a mountain out of a mole hill. you should have either pivoted to white way earlier or just stick to your guns with the sultai pile. (ive seen you do this way too much. you panic when you end up in bad color pairs, then just jump around colors like crazy) if your 3 colors you will find some power to play with eventually, so its not that bad. you were 3 colors and pivoted to a fourth only slightly, then when full on by the end of pack 2. way to late. then pivoted again to WB just put the final nail in the coffen. you are so short on playbles for WB that now you have to either plash filler cards or just run a ton of filler in your main colors. worst draft ive seen from you in a while. maybe ever? you were just all over the place this draft. you need to not panic so much when things don't go well. and commit to your colors more. you just cant pivot that much and that late into a draft.
