I thank people who films things like this so future generations can see what things were once like in this fast changing world.

Liked it.Thanks for sharing.Travelled on these many times in early -mid eighties. As a train enthu at Stockport station these were very common.I liked them esp springy seats and heaters always on full and the fun winding down the door window to open the catch from the outside when you wanted to get off.Not these days, all too clinnical.Happy memories though.Enjoyed watching thanks.

The Class 304 electric multiple unit trains we see hear carry the no nonsense livery of blue and grey with full yellow ends and six digit set numbers.

The sound that you hear as the Class 304 electric multiple unit trains are making as they decelerate is the Westinghouse CM38 air compressor. It was used when the train stopped or the driver had to put the train in 1st gear.

The compressor kicked in when the Main air Reservoir dropped below a certain pressure. These units don't have gears they are electric.

Interesting comparison between the standard and non-standard Cl.304 units there. Nice little piece of nostalgia!

One set has large passenger windows and one has small passenger windows but the engine roar and the camshaft driven Westinghouse air compressor is the same.

Great, interesting video; looks far more interesting than the trams.

You hear the sound of the air compressor, motor growl and the clunky sound of the wheels.

Pretty sure this is July 1991 rather than 1990. The line was closed between Brooklands and Altrincham for two weeks to change the tracks and signalling between Deansgate Jn and Altrincham to permit the eventually downgrading to trams that eventually occurred - several months later than planned - in 1992.

We had 304 units on the LTS line but they were 4 car units.

That would have been in the early 1960s when older electric multiple unit trains were undergoing conversion.

Think your confusing the 304 with the class 308s that used to run on the LTS route

What year did the trains stop running and the trams take over? I like the rickety old slam door units. Crying shame not a single one of them got saved for preservation.

The last trains to Altrincham ran in early 1990, The trains then terminated at Brooklands station until late 1990. The trams started running in 1991 and basically knackered a very good transport line that went as far as Chester (Shrewsbury on occasion) and Crewe. To travel from Sale to Chester now, you have to travel to Manchester Piccadilly or Altrincham by tram and then catch the train - it's progress apparently! As a child, I remember travelling from Sale to Brighton and also from Sale to Blackpool on excursions.

soundseeker63, none of this class were preserved and the British Rail standard blue & grey livery seen here lasted on a number of sets right until the end in 1996.

A 304 was set aside for preservation, but unfortunately it got trashed beyond repair by vandals while stored in a siding somewhere. :(

Something I have never seen before. Is there any footage of the original 1931 electric stock?
