antisyle is and has always been fire. it may look childish or "purposefully bad" but the truth is that if you were to try to replicate the style you would not be able to. It is always clear when a piece is antistyle, versus when it is simply done by someone inexperienced. That in my opinion justifies its existence as a worthy style. Treats or eatcops are both some examples of super talented writers who do antistyle. Jtea also crushes with a mix of traditional straight letters and antistlye pieces. Baltimore is full of tasteful antistyle. You just gotta look at it from a different perspective.

Most of this stuff isn't even antistyle. Obese, Regae and Stole are classic, funky styles, similar to what's seen a lot in western europe, Berlin, Spain etc. The ICBM stuff is anti, but Wombat is one of the most up in NYC rn and has a crazy funky, acid, heavy metal style so deserves respect, all those kids like carl, dip etc, put in more work then the salty people hating. The style may have popped up recently in NYC but people like Clint149, NUG, Renks etc have been painting like this outside of America for 20+ years. Spy33 in the video aka Rambo went hard in NYC for a long time with anti style also, as did neck etc. The anti hate never made any sense to me, this stuff is closer to 70's/80's train graff then the stuff these mega traditional old heads do anyway, the people who do "real graff" make shit that looks nothing like old school stuff either, so in a way this is more authentic.

A mix between writers wanting a unique style and not wanting the general public to enjoy it and this is what you get. I dig the dollar can, stock cap style.

Not even close. I smell a non-new Yorker with opinions. Anti style is a cope for people who refuse to develop style but believe they need it. Graff has absolutely nothing to do with style. It is about getting up, not style. Dudes that think they have to cope with being non-artist writers by calling their shit antistyle are mostly weirdos that never understood graff to begin with. Beleiving you need style to be up is something boys from random places who grew up on the nerd fantasies sold in "style wars" beleive, not the people who came up being schooled by other writers.

I appreciate your commentary. I literally laughed out loud when you said “if I was to actually paint something like this I’d be mad at myself at the end of the day” I can appreciate all graffiti styles I’m just definitely too particular to what my mind’s eye sees, my geometry obsession, and growing up in the 90’s with hip hop and graff. a lot of this stuff on these walls remind me of the stuff out of the Bay and the Pacific Northwest. as an older head who started painting around the late 90's, i HATED anti-style stuff until quite recently. it's way harder to accomplish that sense of 'not giving a fuck' than i initially realized. guys like Cancer Carl etc. RIP

Portland Oregon has a big abandoned building like that called Louis Dreyfus Co grain silos on the waterfront. Lots of graffiti. Julia Louis Dreyfus of Seinfeld's family used to own it. It's right across from where the Portland Trail Blazers play.

I mean Style is Style. Style is subjective. But Graffiti is not merely Art. There is an undeniable element of Craft involved. That's what makes someone a toy... level of Can Control, Understanding of Traditional Graphic Design, Typography & familiarity with Media. You can be Left Field all day. Some of the best Writes always have been. But if you don't understand the basics of Geometry as it applies to letters, the basics of Color Theory & I suppose, most importantly... the Culture & the History, you're a toy.

It’s interesting to note that ‘Antistyle’ isn’t a particularly new thing. Starting in the Scandinavian countries in the 90’s and progressing into what we see today. I find it fascinating that it’s actually really hard to do an anti style piece after conditioning myself for the last 30 odd years to paint perfect straight lines and vector style pieces. In this age of ‘Graffiti Industry’ guys are still seeking out doing pieces with stolen hardware paint and stock caps from oven cleaner and avoiding the graffiti store completely. The general public probably would never commission an antistyle writer to create an artwork on their building or whatever so in that case these guys are retaining the essence of what graffiti or writing was all about in the late 60’s. No frills style. There’s a few guys that stand out for me most notably ‘saeio megawizard’ from Paris rest in peace. Wombat from New York also has an interesting style and she’s up a lot. Interesting you can tell the anti style guys that are really good at art and retain some hidden style versus toys doing antistyle which is a paradox. I think Picasso said it took him 50 years to learn to paint like a child again and strangely it’s not easy.

4:45 i mean it def exploded around then, but antistyle type shit has been around for a while. bunch of crews from san francisco have been on this style for over a decade (BKF & DRUGS crews), and europe has had some nasty stuff for a while now. its always been around, but its definitely a younger persons style, so i def think the pandemic opened up an opportunity for some of the new generation to try graff out

It amazes its even called anything but toy due to how it looks like the work of someone who is inexperienced. Much of this comes from those trying to pursue a retro style or throwback style from the 60's and 70's, however due to social media, those who aren't as successful at it, get the exposure that ordinarily wouldnt have. Back in days in NYC, much of this would have been gone over by more experienced people without hesitation. Indeed its a matter of opinion, but no self-respecting writer would dub themselves an anti style writer because what you do is write, you do style Writing. Anti style originally breaks from stylistic norms like an abstract but many of these arent that. The controversy is the exposure of those who document or thrist for likes on IG and elsewhere share these things over those who are displaying some really innovating can control or style writing. You can't be a certain age doing something like this. By age 20 is when your style if kept at it, reaches a level of development where your lines are getting clean and what you're doing is well define, unfortunately many of these who are doing this are in their late 20s and mid 30s

Well, it takes some art mindset to create anti style stuff, it might seem like kid can do it but if you dont have talent then you cant. it evolved, to more art thing. tbh, i dont think creating 3d is end game.. i think if youre capable of create good antistyle piece thats some high end art.

@@rosjasssI hear this all the time and people say writers who do anti style can actually piece and have a clean handstyle but they choose to do anti style but I can’t think of one writer that does anti style that can also do proper graffiti. Idk maybe I’m wrong and they are secretly talented but when I see anti style all I see is a failed attempt at abstract art by someone who clearly doesn’t know the fundamentals.

First, imo one should do graff purely for themselves and their own gratification. But from a purely aesthetic skill oriented standpoint.... In an an age where dissent/disagreement is being widely suppressed alot of bs can fly that would not have been able to previously. The result is that views become skewed. Social media -> ppl have a platform who otherwise wouldn't -> less disagreement -> more "positive" feedback -> more people onboard with a skewed ideology -> cycle is fed repeats and gets more vicious. That said, with some of these works one can see the can control is there, but shit is just unnerving overall to look at imo. Regarding platforms, that of the old was trains, walls, rolldowns, trucks, outside canvas etc(not social media at all) where as if shit was wack it got gone over by some thing better, or just ragged. Things used to be very very different, things change with the times; the world in most facets is on an accelerated swirl down the shitter, so yea there you have it.
