Brooklyn Secrets. How the Prospect Expressway and Robert Moses Displaced Countless Brooklyn People.

If there’s one thing most people attribute to Robert Moses it’s highways. The master planner built 13 expressways throughout New York, including the Prospect Expressway, Cross Bronx Expressway, Brooklyn Queens Expressway, the FDR Drive, and the West Side Highway. Love him or hate him, this was a pretty profound feat of urban planning. But had he been granted free rein, Moses would’ve constructed even more highways; so as was said in the classic Ten Commandments movie line from Charlton Heston "Are you a master builder or a master butcher." I'll leave you to decide, but I just think he was a power huingry guy; this is well noted who cared very little for working class people.

Thank you so much for your labor of love! My dad's family lived at 134 East 5th between Greenwood and Ft. Hamilton and I lived there from 1962 to 65. That part street was essentially an off ramp for the expressway! The city razed a whole block of houses directly across the street to build a playground adjacent to the expressway. My family lost family friends and who had been neighbors for decades. Robert Moses was a soulless monster.

They took my grandparent's house to build the Belt Parkway. I drive over the spot at the E.16th St. train. I think it is the Q & D line.

When they built the Prospect Expressway, someone didn't know what they were doing, they took half off our house, that didn't need to be taken off. They still had plenty of room left, that they could have left our house alone.

Thanks. You always hear about how the Cross Bronx destroyed neighborhoods - and it did! But you never hear about the damage the Prospect Expy did. They should cover it and rebuild the neighborhood above.

The Prospect Expressway is part of NY Route 27.

The Prospect Expressway should be demolished and replaced with a new Prospect Boulevard as a boulevard to Prospect Park with pedestrian access and bus lanes. Robert Moses destroyed Brooklyn.
