Brother MFC-J4510DW Unboxing & Setup

We un-box and set-up Brother's latest generation of inkjet All-in-Ones, the MFC.J4510dw Business Smart Inkjet All-in-One ($199.99). It is sleek and compact and offers up an attractive feature set but we found build quality to be marginal in our tests. One big feature (pun intended) is its ability to print onto US Ledger-size (11"x17")/A3 media. However, anything larger than US Letter/A4 (including US Legal [8.5"x14"]) must be fed a single sheet at-a-time through the rear-mounted manual feed slot. You also need extra space behind the unit to access this media source and you must exercise care in order for media to feed straight.
Nevertheless, it has good overall image quality (albeit that varies depending on media type), a sweet suite of software and is more photo-centric than other business-class AiOs out there today.

We are unboxing the unit in order to test it. The ad hoc videos are not presentations, we record them in order to document the installation procedures. We then post the videos in hopes that they may be helpful to someone else. We know as much beforehand about it as any other consumer. Once we complete the test, we know more about it than just about anybody. Visit our Web site, check out the test reports and you'll find that the printer is the real toothache, not me. That is called research.

The chips need to be either reset or most likely changed. Most likely, this has to be done by somebody with the proper knowledge and equipment. Keep in mind that the Cost Per Page of this printer is half that of printers from only 5 years ago so it is not as big an issue. Also, Brother sells Hi-Capacity ink cartridges for this model that you should consider purchasing if you hate changing ink (who doesn't). Keep in mind that it will cost you more out of pocket so it's a touch decision to make.

Hey I have a question to ask you. Whenever you install newer cartridges is when they will have new set of green chips that I don't have to worry about taking right off of them, right? What is the purpose of replacing the green chips then?? Is it to manually refill the cartridges with a special liquid formula of some sort? Please help. Thanks.

+Andrew Addison - The chips are there to prevent you from refilling the cartridges yourself and you will never need to keep the old ones because they are useless. However, it is a different story altogether is you want to refill the cartridges yourself and I don't want to go there. Thankfully, the newer the printer the cheaper the ink.

I have that one but i can't connect through WiFi with notebook, two devices are connected in a router-modem Netgear DGN2200, i've installed everything in the notebook (Windows 7) and set-up the printer, but i can't print, what's wrong?

Christian, The easiest thing to do is run the Installation Diagnostics software that is installed on your PC. If that doesn't work, try hooking the printer up to the router with a network cable and running the Installation Diagnostics software again. If that doesn't work, try hooking to the printer from your notebook following the instructions for using a WiFi Direct connection to the printer. This will bypass the router and network altogether. Google "brother mfc-j4510DW wifi direct" for more details.

I just got this printer today, during printing, the printer is very loud. It sounds like the paper is jammed but it's not. Is this normal?

No it is not. It's a bit noisy but not that loud. Make sure that you have all the packing removed and that look carefully to make sure that some paper jam is not buried deep inside.

No. It has one media tray that holds up to 150 sheets and a rear-mounted single-sheet tray for media larger than US Letter/A4.

I use this printer for a while already. The problem is if I click on power off to move to other place then it will not able to turn on again :( Any suggestion to be able to turn on again ( after click on power on bottom few time it just not ON ) , HELP !

Hello. I have no experience with the ink pad in this model but it resides under where (1 the ink carrier parks or 2) reverses direction. Beware that some disassembly will be required IF you can purchase a replacement item.

Did you remove all of the packaging? It is unlikely that all four ink cartridges are not installed properly, and since none of them print it sounds like the print head is not installed correctly or defective. Also, try running the print-quality maintenance utilities. Maybe the ink has not primed properly.

Primary Painting Maybe the ink colors were/are installed in the wrong slots? If so, you'll either have to run several cleanings or keep printing until the wrong color ink is flushed out.

Switch the paper trays in the print driver before you print. Plus, if you are trying to print anything larger than 8.5"x14" you can only do it a single sheet at a time.
