Would this stitch work on a stretchy fabric? I mean, would it give at all if stretched or would the thread break?

Hi Barb this stitch is best on woven fabric however there is a version for stretchy fabrics. It has zig zags instead of straight stitches.

They don't need to be but if it works better for you then do it. :)
