This is most of my work on Koda's mom, some of it I'm very proud of, some of it not so much.
I was incredibly lucky to have the amazing David Nethery do the clean-up animation for both Koda's Mom and Tug. David is, in my humble opinion, one of the top clean-up artists in the business, if not the BEST.
I mostly did just the bear and only a few of the humans, I did do most of the Kenai scenes when he's fighting the bear but there are especially 2 or 3 Kenai scenes at the end that are not mine, I only added them for continuity.

My favorite animation. There is something more lifelike about Koda's mother than any other character I've seen. The realism is spectacular.

I have always loved the weight and volume of both Koda's mother and Tug, and I could sit here and watch these reels again and again and again. Absolutely beautiful animation. Thank you for posting these!

I absolutely LOVE your character design work for Brother Bear! The animation on Koda's mom is gorgeous, and easily one of my favorite parts of the movie.

I love how Koda's mom doesn't look like a soft, stereotypical mother figure; she looks like a *bear*. A massive, powerful one, even as bears go.

That's an old question and maybe even a good one. Many people feel that if there is nothing "magical" or fantastical in the story, there is no reason to do it in animation, and it's a valid point,,, but, first of all, the animation here, is paid work, and as professional animators, we do what we are asked to. Secondly, animation in theory is not SUPPOSED to do anything, when it's not business it's art, and art can be whatever it wants to be.

In the storyboards of the scene where Koda's mom rises from the bushes, Kenai has obviously longer hair. For some reason I thought he could've kept his long hair. It suited him.

*That smooth animation blows me away every time... (qwq)* So brilliant and wonderful to look at! It must've taken ages to animate that many frames!

Lovely animation. I've always loved Disney's animations, ever since I was a child; watching Aladdin and The Lion King. So magical and whimsical. And Brother Bear was a truly fantastic film.

And finally, it's all subjective anyway, you think this is too realistic, someone else might think it's too cartoony, and another person thinks that anything that is literal or figurative is a waste of animation, considering that you can do ANYTHING you can imagine in animation and there are no limits. In the end, if you have a choice, do what makes you happy and what makes you grow and leave the supposed-to's for the teachers and critics.

Rune, this is a perfect summation of what sets your animation apart from standard-issue, run-of-the-mill animation. It's your attitude , the sincerity, the passion, doing something you feel is right , not what it's "supposed to be". (my comment 12 years late ! But I just noticed this comment because I was searching for examples of your animation to show to a student.)

@@david_t_nethery_animator Thank you, David!! It means the world to me that you think so. Always makes me a little sad that we didn’t get to build on the the work and relationship we did and had on Brother Bear. It felt like the beginning of something to me but turned out to be an end. Hugs!

@@runebennickeso you’re the one that worked on this. Just watched it on VHS, good film. One of the most effective parts is when when Koda’s mom, a realistic bear, speaks for the first time and it’s her sons name. It makes you see bears from a whole different perspective. At the end, Koda got to see her mom’s spirit which is more cartoonish. And that’s from a bear’s perspective, you did an amazing job at it. I’m also thinking about working for animation soon.

So far the best character in this film is kodas mother because they made her so realistic as if she was the main conflict or the main resource to this movie

So you're the famous animator of those two; were you the supervising animator? I always wondered was intentional to make Koda's Mom eyes darker and then make them appear more bright at the end of the movie?
