Dan released this song in the middle of my divorce in 1985. It was very sad for me at that time. It got me through it. I was in the US Army at the time. My kids and I made it out the other side..... two years later, I was sent to South Korea for 19 months. Thank God for dad and mama, I had to watch them grow up in pictures. Mama let my kids call me twice each month and sent me pictures. It was a difficult time for my kids and I. I suppose you could say we were successful, my son is an IT professional and manages IT for Winn/Encore Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. My daughter is a cardiologist at Banner- University Medical Center In Tucson Arizona. I'm so proud of my kids.🎉

@@rexoates4484 You hit the nail on the head, Rex. Soul is desperately needed and sorely missed these days. I also miss Harmony singing in both Country and Pop. The 60s and 70s had countless artists/ bands with excellent three/four part harmonies. Whatever happened to Harmony singing? Surely the record companies understands that and its a crowd pleaser too. Maybe there ain't artists out there today CAPABLE of singing tight harmonies? I love the warm Harmonic blend of England Dan and John Ford Coley. Midland is a blast of fresh air and their music is a mix of The Eagles and George Strait. Nice too see real talent finding massive success. The 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s had a well of superb artists but Country lost its sound in the 90s and don't get me started when discussing the Country music of 2000-2021.....I was born in 1980 and got introduced to the fine Pop music of the 1960s through my father. In the late 90s I discovered Country music and consider myself a massive fan and a serious record collector and I've been studying the entire American Country music history, from the late 1920s to the current times. I'm a Norwegian and a songwriter. My favourite pop bands include The Beatles, Beach Boys and Gilbert OSullivan and my favourite Country artists include Don Williams, Paul Overstreet, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and The Everly Brothers. Oh...and my All Time Gospel act is The Louvin Brothers!

Apparently, the reason Dan Seals is not in the Country Music Hall of Fame is because he was always considered a cross-over artist from his pop years with England Dan and John Ford Coley. He has a ton of hit records, but did not get the votes from the Country Music establishment. Willie Nelson, Chrystal Gale, Glenn Cambell, Ronnie MIllsap, Waylen Jennings, were only a few of the headliners who were sitting-in on that show. Pretty impressive company.

I don't know...there was quite a lot of success all gathered together in that one room. The thing about music is: IT WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE COMPETITIVE. It was mean to be enjoyed together not to be a contest. It was the business people, the lawyers and the sales people who made the competition angle to try to push sales and make more money. Ask any of the artists and they'll all tell you they hate the idea of saying their song is better than someone else's song. While you may LIKE or PREFER one artist over all others, it doesn't necessarily make them better, just more to your taste. Whereas another may have a completely diffferent view. So to say any one in that room was better than all the rest is only a subjective view and probably none of the people there would agree with that. They're all different and their musical output is different - as it should be. In order to have any kind of fair competition, you have to remove all of the differences and make all exactly the same.
@thomasmarthinussen89782 жыл бұрын
@@Rx_Bluegrass I wholeheartedly agree with you. Thats why I don't like music contests. It's not based on quality its based on popularity. The most popular song will always win and just like you I don't judge music that way. But there IS a case to be made for calling a particular artist greater than another. I mean, you HAVE to call Elton John greater than say, Justin Bieber in terms of musical quality! The same with the charts. It's just a popularity thing and that's fair enough but I've never thought of music like that. I miss music shows where they simply let musical artists appear and sing their songs without judges making their so called expert comments. No scores, no points, just let the music speak for itself! I'm definitely on your side but none of my friends who are into music agrees with me. I used to watch Eurovision Song Contest but I had to give it up because I knew there was no way to decide which song is "better" or " worse". It all comes to down to individual taste. The thing is, there are ballads, rockers, Jazz inflected songs, and other kinds of music in these contest and its useless to put these up against eachother. Of course saying Dan Seals probably was the greatest of them all is my subjective view. Trouble is, for many people they would call that absolutely objective! Ive talked to several people regarding music and how were judging artists and musical genres and they honestly believe THEIR favourite artist or song IS the best and how dare I even question their stand!😁
@Rx_Bluegrass2 жыл бұрын
@@thomasmarthinussen8978 There is not doubt that as far as musical knowledge or instrument prowess there are going to be vast differences among different people. Case In Point: In the movie Amedeus, Court Composer Salieri (played by F. Murray Abraham) is always comparing his talent to Mozart's and can't quite hold up to the genius. So if it were a contest of who could write more songs, or who could pick more notes in a minute, there would be lesser and greater all across the board. But that's not the same as saying "this song is better". Just like you can't say that "Moonlight Sonata" is better than "Hey Jude". They're not in the same genre, not in the same century and not in the same country....but there will always be people who say: "Hey Jude" is the best of all time....or "There'll never be another song like "Layla". It's just human nature. What they really mean is THEY LIKE IT BETTER. But it's a character flaw just like when they say: "You make me so very angry" when in fact, it is they who make themselves angry because they don't like what you do.

I was traveling all over the country, just a grind of doing installations 100% travel and 15 hour days, but I loved it. I was Superman. my girlfriend was pregnant and I had no idea what to do. This song came up on the radio, I knew the answer after I heard it. I called girlfriend and said “honey, I’m leaving the road behind for good.” It’ll be 5 years come September. I still dream of the road and have the urge to go back on it, but I look at my kids now and realize I never missed a single moment.

I had the pleasure of having dinner with Dan Seals back in the early 90's when he came to play our county fair. The fair manager invited me to the home-cooked dinner his wife put on. Dan was a genuine down to earth guy. What a gentleman, and what a show he put on for our little county fair in Waterville Washington. Rest in peace Dan, many folk miss you dearly.
