The Brotherhood of Steel as a group were actually loosely inspired by the book "A Canticle for Leibowitz". The book is about a group of catholic clergy in a post-nuclear society preserving pre-war scientific knowledge until the outside world is again ready for it. The Brotherhood of Steel is obviously not catholic, much less christian, if anything it is it's own religion, but anyone who has basic Cognitive Association skills can obviously see the inspiration from the book. I'm not sure if the writers behind the newer games are themselves aware of the BOS's inspiration, but if they are I'm taking this as a nod to the book that inspired them. So yeah, nice touch indeed.
