the rear turret is _HEAVY_ and that means the rear of the ship would ride high without balast

@@NemoGraynameA8 The USN also proposed reshaping the bow to a "Vanguard" style bow a few times. Nowadays, a "Burke" bow is probably more contemporary. That would massively increase buoyancy forward (as well as fuel economy and fuel storage), and would help to counter that turret removal. Also, installing a full internal hangar aft would add back some of that weight too, which was also usually in the proposed plans. I think the turret should stay tho. Do the reshaping and hangar anyways, and add a bunch more VLS in the middle with the added buoyancy.

I think an appropriate description for this scenario, would be "The USN's Christmas Wish List". 😆😆 The Iowa's configuration in this scenario, with where the VLS launchers are located, is rather close to what Drachinifel proposed in a recent Battleship New Jersey video - removing all of the remaining twin 5 inch/38 mounts, reworking the midships superstructure, and installing VLS launchers, along with more capable point defense, and modern medium caliber guns for engaging small surface targets - along with remodeling the forward superstructure to install Aegis-type phased array radars and electronics.

I want to build a few models of the Iowa for this game to include some of actually proposed refit designs (with a few updates), like the one where all of the remaining 5"/38s were removed to install 4x 5-inch/62 Mk 45 Mod 4 (lightweight gun), the bow to be reshaped to increase it's buoyancy, fuel capacity, and fuel efficency, the stern rebuilt into a full internal hangar for drones and helicopter operations, and a full suit of VLS launchers installed between and also just aft of the smokestacks. Plus, a second mast aft for more equipment and platforms for multiple AA systems like seasparrow.

There was a plan to fit the AEGIS system on one of the Virginia class missile cruisers along with VLS launchers. But ever since the fall of the USSR and the end of the Cold War, plus with military budget cuts, that plan only made it to the drawing board. Would have been cool though, a nuclear powered missile cruiser with AEGIS and VLS. Would have been a good competitor to the Kirov class battlecruiser.

Absolutely love the naval content. Thanks for the videos. Iowa definitely had the room for vls and or more ammo lol. I love seeing what if scenarios on American ships. Awesome

The Iowa depiction is incorrect. It should have 96 VLS cells, the two forward most 5 inch mounts should be replaced with octuple Sea Sparrow missile launchers (one per side), the 5”38 guns should be replaced with 5”54 guns (whether just the guns would be replaced and the gunhouses lengthened to accommodate them or the Mk 45 mount completely replacing them, I’ve seen conflicting reports), and new types of projectiles with different effects and longer range for the 16 inch guns. Also, at least two of the Iowas received 25mm Bushmaster auto cannons. I know the Wisconsin sported two for several months during the Gulf War but I can’t remember which other one received them

If there's a mod pack for the various proposed refits for the Iowa's, it should be called "Return of the Battleship" or "Not Obselete Yet" or something along those lines. There's a version of this specific Iowa w/ VLS armed with SM-2s, which would actually give them a flighting chance against a Kirov.

The idea of the "strike cruiser" was the successor of the Virginia class would have been cool as it bridges the gap to the real Tico CG-47.

My idea for a hypothetical ship would be taking the 4 WW2 Alaska battlecruisers that weren't built & instead of the guns, giving them 3x twin arm MK-26 launchers at each end of the ship and some russian missile boat style harpoon launchers on the sides.

I would love to see ship vs ships . Maybe like one strong American vls ship vs 2 base game strong soviet ships. Maybe for fun to see what would happen . Or a scenario where the soviets have to fight against one or 2 of the strong American ships. Maybe some of these vs kirovs with some escorts vs 2 strong American ships

man I wish I understood how to make mods like this. I've got some absolutely silly ideas like VLS Gearing and Galveston. Throw a single arm launcher of a C class DD would be funny as well as fitting a supertanker with ABLs for tomahawks.

There was talk at one time if replacing all six 5" mounts with Mk 13 launchers along with associated AN/SPG-51D FC RADARs for each one. Talk about point defence. Today's ESSM launchers would do well at each spot as well.
