I use a Bobbi Brown pencil which is a similar shape to the Tom Ford as I like the lighter finish. I top it off with the Benefit 24Hr Brow Setter. A couple of years ago I previously used a brush and a dark brown powder eyeshadow colour to fill in my brows but I find this a heavier finish, most likely due to my technique.

I can never get the tiny pencils to make strokes that look like hairs either. I only ever use a pencil then a clear gel. I have tried using tinted gels, but they look messy on me. I get the tint above my brows. I’m not sure I’ve used one with an applicator that thin, though! As always, such a helpful video!!
