I used to work as a mechanic at a taxi depo and we did the trans service every 30,000 kms. I think once (maybe twice) i did a service with out spilling a drop on the ground haha. A tip for reduced oil spillage is if you have a rectangle container larger then the oil pan. Have it sideways for the first bit then rotate it for when you take the pan off. It seems stupidly simple but it does catch most of it bar a few drops here and there. And a magnet handy to catch the dropped bolts .

Haha, glad to hear even pros can make a mess on this one. Thanks for sharing though, crazy they got done that often! To be honest I was going to get a larger rectangle pan as you say, but I cheaped out and went with the 'she'll be right' approach - and as we saw I was very wrong! At least the ATF cleans up off the floor ok 😂

Hi all a good tip for doing the flush is disconnect the cooler line from the radiator or external oil cooler first and fit a hose ,have somebody start the car have the hose going into a bucket or container, drain around 4 litres or when the fluid starts to splutter and spit turn off the car ,your trans pan is now empty and easy to remove without covering everything in oil ,remove the pan and clean it replace the filter and gasket ps add some more magnets the more the better , now you can run a piece of clear hose (bunnings has multiple sizes) into the gearbox from the door mirror add a funnel then cable tie to the mirror put the window down first so you can access the key to start it ,now add 4lt start the car run through another 4 litres etc until clean fluid comes out now refit cooler lines and with the engine running and a pump bottle top up until fluid comes out the fill hole put the plug in before switching off as once switched off fluid will pour out . now if you are debating weather a flush is necessary these gearboxes hold over 10lt dry fill so when you replace 4lt you are leaving 6lt of filthy oil in the gearbox and that is insane like changing less than half your engine oil and leaving the rest of the dirty stuff in there . Good video Browney keep up the good work.

For the avg person, you don't need to flush the fluid if the car doesn't have an issue requiring you to look at the fluid in the first place. But you can do a normal fluid service when you change your oil, and then when you change it again in Eg. 10k or every 2nd oil change, like an increased service interval till the fluid clears up to your liking. You can use an OBD scanner and check the trans temp when checking the final level. Warm = transmission temp > 50°C and box is warm to the touch but not hot, eg if you just drove it to the shop and if your engine cooling fans are on, you would wait for 2hrs but not longer than 4hrs to be in that range normally, or if the engine is cold, drive 3.5-4.5kms @ < 2500RPM.

Ok, I worked at a Ford dealership when the AU was new. We serviced these BTR autos in different circumstances. Police cars and Taxis were definitely serviced every 50,000 kms in conjunction with the 50,000 kms major service schedule. These vehicles were fitted with a factory fitted external cooler in front of the radiator and were known as police pack or taxi pack optioned. These commercial vehicles would have come with a supplementary service booklet along with the log books. This stated trans schedules of every 50,000kms and had a record section to stamp and sign. On other private owned commercial such as the utility and the 1 tonner it was an option known as towing pack and came with the same trans cooler, these had the same supplementary service book. The cooler was an indication to us as techs the trans required servicing every 50,000 kms. All other servicing requirements was purely up to the owner and was only a suggestion on the 50,000 kms service. It was purely a ploy to up sell or keep service costs down. My recommendation would be to service every 50k regardless. They are a good box despite some theories, but they do not like getting hot. So i would recommend also to fit the biggest cooler you can fit in the front to keep it cool also. It seemed as though Ford did somewhat keep it secret or not well known about service schedules of the trans. I will never know why.
@BrowneysGarage
@BrowneysGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Greg, thanks very much for sharing this, awesome to hear experiences from guys like yourself. Already have bigger trans cooler up front and it doesn't get driven too much so we'll be a long time off 50k kms!.. yeah I should probably do it sooner with it seeing drags at least once or twice. I agree, I think they're a fine box overall, especially when they can be had for cheap if there is serious neglect and it needs replacing.

hey greg, thanks for your ford dealer insight. Looking at installing an external cooler on my btr. I live in north qld and hot days are a regular thing. The heat exchanger is removed altogether, the heater pipe joined together and replacement (rubber) trans oil lines fit directly into the g'box (where the heat exchanger was) with supplied adapters and run all the way to the new trans cooler. The factory steel lines are bypassed all together.

The 4 speed btr auto box is just a 3 speed Borg Warner with an extra gear and has been used in fords since the mid sixties and was known as the Borg Warner 35, the 6 speed auto fitted from the BF onwards is built by ZF in Germany, that's why the cooler is on the block and not in the radiator and I think they use a different type of fluid

Doesn't apply to all BFs though. My BF wagon had the heat exchanger on the block (stupid idea IMHO) and it was only the four-speed flavour. Worst part was using an OBD2 scanner to reveal that "Solenoid E" had gone faulty but the Ford workshop manual not cross-referencing Solenoid E to what is ultimately Solenoid 6 in the rest of the literature. I had to call DSI (Chinese company that bought out Borg Warner a little while ago) and talk to their tech to find that out and tell my auto guy which solenoid to change for me. Yeah, I have a love-hate relationship with Ford when it comes to my secondary vehicle (aka shitbox). :P

I asked the Service manager what type of oil goes in to the Auto Transmission ... He told me... One day I went back to the Dealer's parts department and asked for a Trans-Oil-Filter kit. I was the told ...there is no such filter ...He showed me on the Computer Screen... and also told me that he never issued one to the workshop. ... Well I ended up getting a Filter-Gasket kit on Ebay. Still eagerly waiting more turbo updates Browney! Here's an idea...you talked about moving the transmission cooler for the intercooler, how about mounting the intercooler in front of the tranny cooler and running two flexible ducting hoses from the fog light cutouts, and then curving 90 degrees and running behind the intercooler and feeding air to the transmission cooler? Maybe not enough space for intercooler, oil cooler, and radiator. An old BMW I had (E36 328i M-Sport) had factory plastic air ducts running from the bumper ducts (beside fog lights) and directing air into the back of the front brakes, obviously to cool the brakes. Might be worth making something similar? Keep the updates coming!
@BrowneysGarage
@BrowneysGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Hoping to mount the intercooler in front on the trans cooler but space wise I don't think it will work on the bracket provided for the trans cooler, it's going to be tight. That's ok, I still have a plan to mount it in this spot that will hopefully work just the same and then everything should have plenty of airflow. Ducting isn't a bad idea, not sure how much airflow it would add with the foglights still in for the hassle of sorting and mounting them but definitely a good one to keep in mind, thanks mate! Also, hell yeah on the E36 328i M-Sport, would have been a great car!

@@BrowneysGarage it was a great car yes. That was back in Ireland before I moved out here, and before E36's started to cost crazy money. The E36 was fun but they don't have anywhere near the torque of the XR6. I've done mountain passes and scenic highways in 4th gear without ever having to change gear, E36 wouldn't stand a chance at that! I'll be following your build closely as my XR6 feels incredibly sluggish with that long first gear, it actually reminds me of a 4wd when you accelerate in first lol. Good choice on keeping the BTR, I've seen so many arguments for and against them, but with a high stall, larger oil pump from an AU or ED, and the solenoid bypass mod these boxes are actually supposed to handle decent power! I know you probably don’t want to do it again but it will run much better with it and it lasts much longer then any other trans oil 😊 If you read the tq 95 fluid specs you will understand why ford is so vague

Hi Browney, Thanks for the video. I have a 98 EL Falcon and wonder if it would be feasible to install a drain plug on the oil try for easier servicing. I live 2 hours away from a Ford Service Centre so used to do much of the service myself but after my accident I don't have strength in my shoulders and arms. Thus having a drain plug on the auto pan will be easier for me. Could you please give me your option on this matter. Thanking you in advance.👍👍

That`s a nice tutorial! Yes, we have this ugly oil cooler AKA heat exhchanger system on our Ford BF. This cooler finally broke and both liquids are mixed together... Apart from the entire cooling system must be flushed off the pinkish "cappuccino", the transmission must be fully cleaned too. But as I see, that`s nearly impossible to flush it completely, an amount of this mix will remain in a transformer... Can your technique help with full flushing or it needs for 4-5-7 or more oil/filter replacing in a row to reduce this cappuccino concentration only? Some people told me that this gearbox is already in a big doubt and can`t last for a long time. Is that really correct?

I had one that was super tight & nearly rounded the hex off with a bar on the end of the socket , my last ditch effort involved drilling out the socket where the hole for the retainer is , to the size of a large screwdriver shank ( cutting the end off an old crappy one) it gets the levering force closer to the head of the bolt & worked well . I then ditched the plug & bought a new one .

Hopefully it's a little different take on a few things at least, not sure I'd seen the full job done like this at very least. For me , I didn’t have a good experience with Penrite atf . Box started slipping and died soon after . The 1-2 band was toast . No other scientific method to prove that it was the oil . But with my new built turbo box , I’m sticking with Castrol . Just wondering if anyone else has had the same happened to them ? Or was my old box going to die with the torque from the turbo and 12 to 14 psi ?

Maybe because Castrol TQ95 was developed in conjunction with BTR over a five year period when developing the box & is specifically recommended by ford as the ONLY fluid to use in a 4 speed BTR . Some mechanical workshops are getting the customer to sign a waiver if the car has over 100000klm that if they service the auto & it plays up after it , then the problem is not on them . These same workshops continue to use other brands/grades of oil including full synthetic & the problem keeps happening . I keep using TQ95 on our au & bf wagons with high klm & regular towing & have not had this issue.

Great video! Just a question. When refilling the ATF, is it best to check the level while the engine is idling? The Transdoctor has on their webiste: "With T-bar in Park start engine, remove plug and fill till fluid trickles out of hole moderately then re-fit plug and tighten but not too tight a small nip up is enough..and your all done". Other mechanics say to check with the engine turned off and the oil at 40-50 degree. What do you reccomend? I appreciate your comments! Cheers

Oh and on the 'servicing a gearbox will cause it to slip' issue - again I'm no expert but the logic I've heard behind this is if you have a particularly abused or old auto, much of the friction material from the clutch plates can be worn off and washed into the oil. The oil then carries this friction material and helps stop the clutch packs slipping, but when serviced/flushed it's lost and the extra friction it added is lost, giving issues that were bound to pop up at some point anyway. Not sure whether I believe that or not but it's a theory I've heard and seems plausible.
