Many many years ago I used to sing folk songs and wishy washy pop songs. I played harmonica usually folk or pop. I started playing harmonica at 7years of age simple pop music etc, then I discovered a singer and harp player, Sonny Terry and Brownie Mc Gee, I also discovered Sonny Boy Williamson 2nd. From then on I was hooked on The Blues and no matter who else I have heard since I still get my inspiration from these guys, what a quirk of fate Sonny and Brownie getting together, had they not ther

You see it in his eyes, hear it in his voice, the wear on his face - pure conviction mind, heart and soul. He not only believes the words ... he done lived every verse.

@howlingsandy - Thanks so much for posting, love it!! As far as your comment on Brownie playin both "bass & melody", it's a GREAT talent to perform it like it's second nature, & something I envy! It's a terrific song and one, I'll work on learning!! There's so much great stuff out there to be had, thanks again for making my life a bit richer by making it available to watch!! :)

Lately I have been listening very closely to this guy from a guitar standpoint, but It's mainly his great expressive voice and the spirit behind it that does it for me. This is more than straight up 12 bar stuff. He has some great changes here.....A7 Bb F C etc....He does the same kind of moves in Rainy Day. The version of that song in the 1989 movie Angel Heart I think is nicer then the more produced single that came out.

Saw him several times alone and with Mark Hummel's bands ably backing him up. Maybe my favorite was at the old Freight and Salvage with Berkeley's own Triumph riding harmonica slinger Will Scarlet on harp. Brownie made a simple song meaningful because as he sang; Blues is Truth.

Yep, this particular concert tour (there were many acts, and WD played with just about all performers) . My prior answer, it seems, was while I was looking at a different video when the reply I wrote to someone was thought to refer to the one I was watching at the time it came to my email, as he's obviously here in this one. I was probably sleep deprived or something :) and rush to answer, so I stand corrected. or sit. correcting. Cheers. SGS (by the way I finally located the barbecue photos)

i don't see or hear Willie Dixon on this and it would be MOST unusual if he had been. Brownie played his own bass lines and melody same time. I used to sit in on drums at times with them. Learned some harp from Sonny (more from Howlin' Wolf) and I'll post a video story sometime about the Easter Bar B Que at Brownie's place in Oakland that is really funny.

@natsway Seems my original comment (re: WIllie Dixon) was aimed at a different video but got sent to this, I hadn't noticed YT new "queue" had shifted the window to this video, which I only just saw, Willie Dixon visible near the end of the tape. Still, what I said about Brownie is so. Mike Wilhelm, who sings/plays guitar on this referred vid: "triple dub dot" + kzbin.info/www/bejne/bISUmHqvd5aSbqM studied w/ Brownie for years. I'm playing harp. (4 AM Hyde St Studios SF 1985 budget for only 1-take)

+Duke OfTheDamned I think he is using the key of A harp. Guitar cords to this song are F# G# A B C# Eflat E Sonny seems to be accenting the major cords mostly.

All hail the great Brownie McGhee, prodige of Blind Boy Fuller, greatest blues singer who ever lived, etc.etc., everybody hooray. And as an after tought, where exactly is Brownie's mic?Ok, i just noticed something hanging under his chin.
