Nice video. Good to see that beautiful A5 20 gauge. In a world where most gun shooters on KZbin know all there is to know about everything, it's refreshing to see self-deprecation.

I highly recommend that you purchase this book. It is THE go to book for the Browning Auto 5. You will not regret it as you will gain even more respect for Browning's design. It is a bit expensive (About $65) but once you read through it you will know you made a good investment. Good shooting. Love my Browning Auto 5 in 20ga. Browning Auto-5 Shotguns, The Belgian FN Production - Revised, Second Edition Hardcover - 2010 by Jr. H.M. Shirley (Author), Anthony Vanderlinden (Author)

Hey this looks really cool. I should have read it before making the video.... and nice, glad to hear from another A5 20ga fan.

Cool clay thrower, I might look into getting one of those. The ventilation on the rib is more for creating more surface area for cooling the lightweight barrel during long strings of shooting clays.
@4gauge106 жыл бұрын
The vent rib is to help with target accusation with a hot barrel that distorts the target image with heat.Another John Moses BrowninG first.

That makes perfect sense - ingenious - just didn't know what the heck I was talking about when making the video.
@4gauge106 жыл бұрын
Colehurst HAHAHA!!.That's ok.I wish Browning would go back to making these again,their newest A-5 is very anemic looking,very reliable like the original A-5,but the styling is lacking.
@4gauge106 жыл бұрын
Colehurst I will warn you on a HIDDEN mechanical issue with the original A-5 that you need to be aware of. After about 4,000-5,000 rounds the springs need to be replaced due to wear and tear.(springs tend to take a"SET"after awhile and need to be replaced) The way to check to see if your A-5(light,standard,magnum,skeet)is due for a overhaul,is to set the main recoil spring to the"HEAVY"setting and cycle some"low base"7/8's-ounce loads through it,if the gun is able to cycle them without issues(jamming on feed or ejection)its time to replace the 4 springs in your A-5.(the gun SHOULD JAM EVERY TIME ON THE"HEAVY LOAD"SETTING WHICH INICATES ITS FUNCTIONING NORMALLY ) You can buy a spring kit from Brownells firearm parts for about $12.00.I would personally buy a kit and put it away for a"rainy day"investment.It also comes with the needed bronze friction rings too.

I agree - the new ones remain A-5 with a half assed and underwhelming attempt to modernize the style ... The A-5 style is a bit old fashioned but it has a serious dose of plain solid elegance to it that takes the cake...
@Colehurst6 жыл бұрын
Hmm thanks for that - I'll keep that in mind, am probably at the 1500-2000 round mark on mine but i can see how after 5k rounds those springs would be hurting

when I heard your explanation for the ventilated rib on the barrel I bout spit my coffee all over my desk top. Hey, you don't know what chew don't know, right? What a wonderful browning A5. Just gorgeous. Also, if the magazine had a plug in it you would not have been able to load that 3rd shell. It should take a 4th one too.

The Browning A-5 is also the most reliable semi-auto in the world also,it even beats most pump actions,believe it or not.
@Colehurst6 жыл бұрын
I am not surprised, never have had a jam with that thing in thousands of shells put through it - and I believe its a gun from either 1969 or 1976 (cant remember the serial number) - which was forgotten in the closed and never oiled until i found it ... ants had crawled down the barrel and the bolt was fused/rusted to the barrel when i found it...
@4gauge106 жыл бұрын
Colehurst If you set the main recoil spring to the HEAVY setting and it cycles low-brass loads freely,but you don't replace the springs,you will PERMANENTLY DAMAGE the gun by the bolt SLAPPING the inside of the receiver and breach stop.

A rib is there to prevent barrel heat causing haze
@Colehurst7 жыл бұрын
Ah that makes sense
@j.michaelrogerson85414 жыл бұрын
The vent rib is to keep you from seeing heat waves when the barrel gets really hot.
@damont40917 жыл бұрын
Mannnn I want that Auto 5
@poseidon50034 жыл бұрын
LOL. THe vented barrel is to negate the shimmering effect coming off of the barrel due to heat which can effect regular bead sights. It just gives you a clearer aim.

/K/avalier I got one with 85% of the blueing original wood and no rust or pitting what so ever only detriment is a Polly choke(not that it's in bad shape they just take a little value off) mine was made between 1940-46 and I paid 515 with tax, shipping, and the transfer fee

Ventilated rib for wind resistance, that’s a new one for me. Whoever told you that, you should stay away from him. Ribs are to dissipate mirage from the hot barrel. Good shooting

Woh Woh Woh, You loaded a gun with about 4 cartridges and the placed it on a table and walked away, I have never seen something so dangerous in my 40 plus years of shooting, only last week an Olympic young shooter was killed by loading a gun and then for some reason put it down.............never ever load a gun and walk away
@MyersMonroe3 жыл бұрын
I’m afraid that was an unusual move for the purposes of keeping the video rolling. You’re right though I regret having that in the video - you’ll note my cameraman didn’t walk in front of it and the safety was on.

Colehurst here in Portugal it's two shots in a competition. I don't know how it is there in the Us but i'd be verry thankfull to know.
@Colehurst8 жыл бұрын
Well I'm afraid I dont know since I've never been to a professional range at home ! - I think we are allowed two shots when there are two disks being launched, but the only other difference I am aware of it that for the american version of the game we use clay disks that are a little thinner and easier to break than the international standard - (I'm in France now so if I go to a range soon I'll probably involved in a version of the sport much closer to that which you'd be familiar with in Portugal.)
