Yeah, Silent Hill games are pretty famous for looking vast and open initially, but actually having half the map cut off and most of the doors just being painted on textures. "This door doesn't open" is basically a meme.

Also, the Evil Within 2 is _really_ good. The open-world segments are pretty limited in scope, acting as "overworld" areas that link together more focused locations. It also has some semi-hidden gags that are probably right up your alley.
