Nah. Brownie has been around since 1946. Browns fans love Brownie more than the Dawg Pound. The Dawgs were the identity of the 1980s team which the fans latched onto and made it a thing. But Brownie is OG.

Being from Paul Browns hometown of Massillon OH, I can help with the confusion. The team isn’t named after a color. It’s named after the legendary and founding head coach Paul Brown. Local Cleveland area media would report about the forming of the still unnamed team as “Browns’ team” and the name stuck. Brown chose orange and brown in homage to his beloved high school team the Massillon Tigers. He was talked out of going with orange and black in fear of alienating other northeast Ohio towns. The Cincinnati Bengals, the other team Brown founded, were named Bengals in homage to the Massillon Tigers. The elf is really a brownie, a mischievous elf like mythical creature. Brown was tasked to come up with some kind of mascot for publication advertising and, playing on the name Brown, was inspired by the mascot of the Brownie Soda root beer logo. This dog logo isn’t the official team logo, it’s still the orange helmet. This is just an alternative logo. The dawg thing started in the 80s. The defensive players would bark and call each other dogs after big plays and hits during preseason practices and the attending crowds carried it over into the games. There was a particular cheap seat section in the end zone of the old stadium that was loud and rambunctious and took the dog thing to another level-and the “Dawgpound” was born.
