Love watching! The combination planters are going to be beautiful. Lots of onions, I hope your plan works for your customers and they like smaller amounts of onions.

I am in the Pacific Northwest, Idaho and Washington Palouse. I thoroughly enjoy farming. Ive work with several farmers here as a mechanic. Everything here is non irrigation farming. Millions of acres of Wheat, Barley, peas, lentils, garbanzo, and canola. It’s awesome to see the different farms around the country. Do y’all have a Facebook page? Id love to send pictures from here as things begin growing.

You would sell more onions if you make smaller size that's a good idea

Love watching your videos. It’s like therapy! I’d love if you can show what soil/mix you’re using to start seeds. Thanks!

Thanks Logan! And since you asked: I think I'd try using the seeder with the plate to seed the onions. Either the 512 plate, or the new plate you ordered (397?) That would give you about 33 seeds per 12 hole tray section with the 397 plate, or about 42 seeds with a 512 plate. The 32 hole tray would be about 12 sets per pack (with the 397 plate) or about 16 sets per pack with the 512 plate. To defray costs, that 'half-pack' would normally cost more than its fraction of the larger pack (there's also more handling in the smaller packs, higher plastic costs, and you are reducing your minimum sale, so you don't want to under-price it) If any seeds land on the dividers, you could go through and flick them one left then one right, maybe with a pop-sickle stick, or just tilt the tray a little sideways and shake once or twice, if the other seeds stayed in place. If any seed lines in the plate kine up directly with the dividers, you might run a piece of sturdy narrow tape over that row of holes on the plate, and pull the tape off afterward. That might reduce the 512 count to what you give now per pack. Here are some advantages: Every pack has close to the same number of sets. Each set is set the most apart from the other sets as possible, so they don't grow together, and they are easier to separate for the customer, also allowing them to grow healthier overall, with no overcrowding. Also, each pack is uniform, so customers can see they get the same amount with each pack, so no time wasted trying get one with the most seeds. Also, a uniform product looks better usually, and more professional, and it controls for seed cost by giving you "portion control", for what that is worth. I would think it through and definitely give it a try just to see, whenever next time is! There are other details too space consuming to write. BTW 1/2" wide glass-strand reinforced shipping tape of old would come off in one piece from the plate most likely.I hope that helps! Thanks for sharing everything with us! BTW Does your mom make a sheet with all the different combinations of plants she tries in the hanging baskets? And maybe tracks them how well they sell (by counting the leftovers)

Try both and see what sells best. Then you can decide how to plant them in the years to come.

Looks like two small trays equal one big one so price accordingly. Or it was a camera illusion.

Your videos get better and better. You’re more comfortable on camera and are great at explaining things. Do you plant the rye grass to add nutrients to the soil?

We used to grow our retail onions in 801 trays and our field onions in 288 plug trays. You should be able to use your seeder to do the retail trays. If you use a 392 plate in your machine over a 1201 tray you will get approximately 32 seeds per cell, which is what you were shooting for by doing the hand seating anyway. And on combo baskets we got so we used multi-liners or Trixie liners or something comparable. Those come with multiple plant species per plug in a combination "recipe". You can look in the catalogs for the company selling them to see what the finished product looks like. So much faster and easier than the way your poor mother is doing it!

I think your parents should allow you to try your onion seeding idea as an experiment on the side and see how the sales go.

Do you have any system to help track greenhouse temps? This is my first year starting a nursery and i have a 10x24' greenhouse but the temperature is so unstable im afraid i might lose my plants. The heater i have only keeps it 10° warmer at night but in the day with the heater off it can go over 100° and i also work a full time job so its hard to fix it during the day. Is there anything you think might help me with this?

I would pet the cows and talk sweetly to them. It always seems a little harsh the way they are treated. Very little kindness. They are giving so much.

Old way , you need more than 5 or 6 onions 🧅 Sold in Australia in bigger tray like you have sold them in.😊 More work more labels etc😊 Glad Frank is doing good has a job hope he can help part time in the summer on weekends maybe if he’s not too tired…😊
