Actually, it’s speculated that he got 542. However, it is confirmed to be at 505. If I remember, there had to be an officer and another eye witness along with the sniper to confirm the kill. I may be wrong, but my memory isn’t the best.

Conformed is 512 but it is also possible that he got another 250 unconfirmed kills with a sub machine gun. But either way a truly deadly and humble man.

Bolt actions are the easiest to get in Europe (If I remember correctly Britain's gun laws are horrendous, but I still think they can get bolt action rifles). The mountain clips are not from Finland. You can also see the difference of the troops on the mountains: they are in their grey or green outfits, whereas the Finns used their white camouflage. And sturdier winter hats than just the peaked caps.

Excellent observation I believe the mountains are most likely from Norway. Finland on the other hand is very flat with few mountains but lots of evergreen forest (ie perfect for snipers since the enemy must cross vast stretches of open terrain surrounded by thick evergreen trees)

The Soviets did actually win the Winter War, just it was a Pyrrhic victory. Meaning they lost a lot of soldiers, and even equip. Death ratio was about 10:1 - mainly because the Soviets used an old military doctrine originating from before the machine gun age: so a full frontal attack to machine guns moving them down by the dozins in every attack. Some cover came from the tanks, but once the infantry was shred to pieces, the isolated tanks bacame victims of Finnish tank destroyer teams. The Soviet artillery was a big killer of the Finnish soldiers - not sure if they caused Finnish casualties the most. But so many battles the Soviets lost that after the war Finland had more heavy equipment and infantry firearms than before it. So lots of Finnish arms were Made in USSR. Well, even the standard rifle of the Finnish soldiers even before the Winter War was a modified Mosin-Nagant from WWI time, some made in the late 19th century even. Improved sights, maybe the barrel too. The resulting gun was more accurate than the original. Not all of those surplus weapons are likely from the Winter war of 1939-1940: Finland fought against the Soviets a second war in 1941-1944. It's called Continuation war, because it's just ending the seize fire of the spring 1940 - no peace treaty existed. So the war continued. That time Finland did attack, mainly to gain back the lost territories. It was done alongside with Germany attacking Soviet Union. Well, once again the Soviets won, and Finland lost additional ground. So yeah, as an afterthought: should have left undone. Just in 1941 it looked like Stalin was planning a new attack on Finland, so Finns thought better take the initiative. In that sense the attack was understandable: 'Let's hit first, of they're gonna come again'.
