Bruce Conner Artist Filmmaker on Tea With Tosh

Along with my father Wallace Berman, Bruce Conner is one of the great artists to come out of 20th mid-Century America. I have known Bruce throughout my life, and one day, out of the blue, he called me to ask if he can be on "Tea With Tosh." I remember being nervous interviewing him, due to his nature, but also my appreciation for him as an artist and filmmaker. Ironic that Conner called you to ask to be interviewed and then made remarks like "they told me this was going to be a low key interview." Kind of an asshole. It's a valuable document at any rate, thanks again for sharing.

Bruce Conner! Yo he conocido su magnifica obra en el 2017, en el Museo Reina Sofia de Madrid Yo estaba trabajando allí, temporalmente, de auxiliar de sala Cuándo atravesaba las primeras salas hasta llegar a la sala que me habían asignado me pareció una obra complicada y dificil de entender, incluso algo morbosa e inquietante, pero cuando llegué a mi puesto y realicé la revisión de las obras, empezó a interesarme, a atraerme y a sentirme feliz, rodeada de una obra que acaparaba mi atención y pensé: "este hombre es muy interesante y en su vida ha vivido muchas vidas y sus manos estan dotadas de una gran habilidad, sus manos son las manos de un gran artista" Conforme iba pasando la tarde, yo estaba cada vez mas atraída por la obra y por este "ser" tan especial, tan diverso, tan lleno de espiritualidad. Pensé: Dios mío cómo me gustaria haberlo conocido, mirar a sus intensos ojos azules y preguntarle muchas cosas. Apenas entendia su obra pero cada vez me interesaba más. Al día siguiente estaba totalmente atrapada por ella. Su espíritu estaba allí, llenandolo todo. Creo que tanto los que conocían su obra cómo los que no, pasaban por delante de ella imbuidos por una gran curiosidad y admiración. Era como si observaras la obra de distintos autores Fue una experiencia fascinante La exposición se presentaba con el nombre de: "Bruce Conner, es todo cierto" Yo la renombre con el título de: "Bruce conner, todo es posible" Tan posible, cómo que él paseara por las salas, observando a los visitantes y a todos los que estabamos allí Porque para él, su obra no es importante, lo importante son las personas y los acontecimientos, o tal vez su obra es importante y él es anónimo, puesto que en vez de ser él, podría ser otro el autor Como todo puede ser... Y como todo es cierto Una tarde, un señor mayor, alto y delgado de barba suave, muy suave, se dirigió a mí sonriendo y por escrito y en español me hizo una pregunta Yo le contesté y él, siempre sonriente y por escrito, me pregunta cuál es mi nombre - María del Carmen, le digo, y añado: -Y usted? El me sonrie con mas fuerza escribe y se marcha Cuando puedo leer había puesto "El autor no firma su obra" Mire hacia el pasillo pero ya no lo vi, y no podía dejar mi puesto Sentí algo especial entre confusión y sopresa Pero también sentí una especie de melancólica añoranza que todavía no me ha abandonado María del Carmen Hernández Rodrigo

The trouble with spaghetti art is that pasta that sticks to the wall is invariably overcooked. Not so the work of Conner who is *al dente* on all seven mystic levels. Nor are you as host (overcooked, that is), who manage to contain Conner’s snarky ego identification problems in a homespun and low-key manner. Unfortunate that the film could not be seen (and a brief search failed to find it elsewhere). But another delightful tea all the same. Thanks.

Yikes. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I’m grateful Tosh uploaded the only video of Conner available for public consumption. In his book he explains how his childhood was largely watching his father work. He is the expert.
