Aikidoflow, my LEGENDARY legend is my grandfather. A World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War and Contra War. Drafted into the World War II. A real survivor of how to stay alive. A Native American. And I love his quote. At his retirement party. "I'm not a warrior." All those of wars. And he's not a warrior. I love my grandfather.

Yes me too, I started way back about '80 taking TKD(Korean Art of self-defense) for about 5 years til it started to get more expensive(I could buy books on the Art for $20 ea. . Later around '96, I started in Aikido, went several times, got some good techniques down(free),I did get to test but since I haven't paid....I didn't advance. I feel I got almost enough to put with my TKD then read several books on JKD(the 4 books on BL's fighting techniques). I got "Tao of Jeet Kune Do", "Entering,to trapping,to grappling" among others, even some Ninjitsu with Stephen K. Hayes and his Sifu Dr. Masaki Hatsumi. Some books on TKD to learn a few up coming forms(just for yucks).

Actually wing chun stems from White crane Plum blossom and snake style from a monk named Ng Mui and Chin, Na was a joint manipulation technique which was around as long as the shoalin temple or longer. Aikido is a very young art created by Morihei Ueshiba in the early 1900s. So much of Aikido will show up in other martial arts as it was developed from many other martial arts, he was also a soldier in the Japanese Army.

And all these techniques you mention here can be found in Hapkido too (which is not a surprise since Aïkido and Hapkido share the same Aïkijujutsu roots). I was referred by a Friend and immediately began realization that Aikido and other styles were somehow connected. There was an energy there. If it hasn't already been mentioned, an "underground" fighter from the 90's used a lot of Aikido techniques (throws and lock-throws). He obviously was a master of other types of martial arts, also. It was a short-lived 90's PPV-style no-holds-barred style show called "Fight Zone." His nickname was "Badd Karma" and he claimed he was undefeated in underground fighting. This guy showed incredibly advanced Aikido-type of throws. Choreographed or not, it's well worth the look. No opponent could even land an attack due to his incredible defense. And he reminds you that you don't have to be a big heavyweight to do MMA like this.

Bruce Lee did not learn all of his kicking techniques from Jhoon Rhee. Infact Jhoon denies in a article from "Bruce Lee Conversations" book that he never claim he taught Lee how to kick. Before Bruce came to train in Wing Chun he had study other Chinese martial styles including Hung Gar, Pa Kua Chang, Wu and Yang style Tai Chi Chuan which he learned from his father. Chin Na the art of seizing-locking-grappling as well as fencing which his got from his brother, he knew several sets in tam toy springy leg, praying mantis, and he knew a number of techniques from Choy Li Fut. These are all styles containing high kicks and all of which he learned before he encounter taekwondo master Jhoon Rhee. He also knew a bit of Mi Zong Quan which he is seen demonstrating the Chinese Connection also know as Fist of Fury in the USA. There even exist old documented photos of Lee doing high kicks as a young man in Hong Kong before ever meeting Rhee that debunks this myth. Even Chuck Norris and famed hapkido grandmaster Ji Han Jae lay claim to having taught Bruce high kicks and grappling techniques. All of which have been proven as false. What many still do not realize is that both northern and southern styles have kicks of all kinds including high kicks in them especially the northern systems of kungfu have a vast amount of kicking in them like the high side, round, spinning, back, hook, and crescent kicks in them. Even the style(s) of Wing Chun itself contains high kicks that many do not know of or make the statement that the Chinese practice kicking high but aim the kicks low in a real fighting scenario which only partially true. Truth of the matter is Chinese believe in kicking anywhere only the body as well as using every part of the body to attack or defend with. It has proven that kicking the to the mid part or lower areas of the body are harder to defend against, generate the most power and are more practical in a real type fight. There also exist a style of kungfu in the China. One form in this style is said to have more flashy-elaborate kicks in it than all of taekwondo combine. Known as Jeet Kune Dao virtually similar in spelling to Bruce Lee's non-classical Jeet Kune Do. Now whether Jhoon Rhee exchange with Lee his philosophy and approach on kicking the Korean way is a more valid debate aside from this.

The ancient Shaolin Temple monks do this and Grand Master Yip Man was extremely good at using his energy in balance. There are a few recent movies somewhat based on Yip Man. ..and they show how chi is very important to exercises like the wing chun practice Pac Sao watch it and you will see how the transfer of light or soft is balanced wight heavy or heard strenghts..great post and am glad you can appreciate the Chinese chi energy in martial arts. I myself ?? enjoy wing chun cause you don't have to be big in strength or size...great post though and again thanks.

I think Aikido is very compatible with Wing chuan kung fu. Both are suitable for close combat and do not use great power. That is, they agree with each other in terms of softly controlling stiffness. Bruce Lee was a well-known Seattle dojo in the United States, and Judo was practiced, but it was surprising that Aikido was incorporated into the this movie, Enter the dragon. Because it was accomplished in 1973, 15 years before Steven Seagal came out. Thanks a lot for posted.

It's very evident that Bruce lee studied these arts from his tremendous library of book and film but its also written that he got a lot of his grappling skills from Judo Gene Lebell, Fred Sato Hayward Nishioka and Small Circle Jiu Jutsu from Wally Jay.

This was a great video. It shows the intense passion and technical innovation Bruce Lee continually developed. Intrigued by why some of his grappling moves were labeled Aikido? Aikido is an absolutely beautiful and elegant martial art where the practitioners blend into and manipulate their opponent's energy. However, couldn't his techniques be labeled as Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Hapkido, Aiki Jitsu, or Sambo methods? Or couldn't his techniques be related to the multiplicity of wrestling styles emanating throughout history from Africa, ancient Egypt, the Philippines, Mongolia, India, Indonesian Silat, and English country wrestling among others world-wide. Isn't the aim of all grappling arts to blend with and utilize their opponent's energy to the advantage of the grappling practitioner? I know O Sensei Uyeshiba's Aikido was awesome! But I bet if we could time travel to 300 B.C. and show this video to some Indian warriors I bet ya someone would say wow that dude fights like my cousin!

What my Sensei told me was that Jeet Kune Do roughly translates to "what ever works." When I was a kid I had always heard that Bruce Lee was a 10th degree black belt. According to my Sensei he never went past 3rd degree or Dan depending on the style. He did this, however, in several different styles (some of which are mentioned in the video). Bruce Lee took from all of this and used "what ever works."If any of this is in error; I will not be offended by corrections.

Of course you can say that these are aikido techniques but they also resemble grappling techniques used in many oriental martial arts.Similar techniques can also be found in martial arts manuals published in europe during the middle ages and the renaissance.Just shows that people come up with similar solutions to similar problems and use what works.

I thought the move at 8:15 was a move from wrestling, a double leg take down,so many similarities between the different fighting styles. I never knew it was from aikido

I strongly suspect Bruce learned most of his Aikido moves from Hapkido grandmaster Ji Han Jae. As the master himself explains, he showed Bruce movements during a demonstration of his Hapkido at a military base.

Bruce Lee pick up grappling from his first student Jesse Glover who taught him Judo, he also pick up Jujitsu from Wally Jay which he has a black belt in. And Hapkido Ji Han Jae who founded Sin Moo Hapkido. Of course if you look at *Enter The Dragon* , he used a broaden range of martial arts in his film. Hapkido takedowns he favored the most. But from a certain point of view he also a interest in *Aikido* as well.

Brilliant analysis. Forms of Aikido are often used without people even realising. Take Floyd Mayweather and look at hes defensive style... punches beimg gently redirected away, totally different than blocking. He basically blends with the energy and redirects and it worked very well. There is always something to learn

Wow, what a great informative video! I saw Bruce Lee's name in the title and thought the video would deviate away on some other path. This connected extremely well with those "Enter the Dragon" movie clips; and frankly, gave me a clear understanding of what was going on. Live and learn.

Bruce was king. He uses Tae Kwon Do in his many kicks, Kung Fu in weapon and strikes and Aikido in redirecting. One thing that made him so effective was with that many tools in use you don't have to decide what method you are going to use the method happens all it's on depending on what the opponent does. You win when you don't have to stick to one method and it becomes second nature.

Bruce Lee DID do Aikido, and everything ELSE. Jeet Kune Do is like modern mma. Also, he didn't just get his kicking styles from Korean arts, he was really big into French Savate.
@Outrider747 жыл бұрын
It is interesting to note that, while obviously the techniques are exaggerated and stylized for movie purposes, Lee often drew from what he would theoretically do in that actual situation for his responses. BTW, I believe one of those attackers is a young Jackie Chan.
