This is a great episode because we are starting to gauge the drug letter feedback and the interview is a crystalline example that while BL may have indulged in the vices of celebrity, his originality and vision were incorruptible. His humanity, like the example of Coburn and McQueen, could encompass both to an extent, to form a totality. A rightfully sophisticated review with a great ending, “I thank you man”. Thx Sifu, Dre.

Terrific episode. Steve and Bruce both had HUGE egos, but Lee admired McQueen's toughness and work ethic. Bruce was not a great teacher, but he was able to take several of his students (e.g., Joe Lewis, Ted Wong, Bob Bremer) to another level. It's interesting to note that a stuntman on the set of Fists Of Fury challenged the Little Dragon to a fight, and Bruce told him that he had to go through Bob Baker before accepting that challenge. Baker apparently destroyed this challenger in a matter of seconds. According to Baker, Bruce told James Yimm Lee that he had 3 good fighters (e.g., Bob Bremer, Larry Hartsell, Dan Lee) in Los Angeles whereas his Oakland school/James Yimm Lee's garage was, "full of good fighters." Baker was not only Lee's drug supplier, he was also a legitimate tough guy.

PhilC, Bruce alway had the Ego & if history is accurate, Bruce been an actor since birth. I don't know McQueen's history, but, vice-versa Steve is facing the same problems in Hong Kong Bruce faced in Hollywood.

On a Bruce related sidenote... I saw some really cool info from another one of Bruce's Seattle era students named Joe Cowles; Mr. Cowles went on to found his system (Wu Wei Kungfu) based on his time as a student of Bruce. Mr. Cowles passed away in 2014, but one of his top students teaches Israeli military units (he was featured in Frank Grillo's "Fightworld" Netflix series back in 2018).

hello chaps - it's me again, Yes, answering another older post offered by KZbin but I'm assuming a comment contribution helps with the algorithm (smile). I think one of the interesting aspects around this posting is the expectations of others that Bruce should be further down the road of life then perhaps the rest of us would be. Remembering that he is still a young man at the time he was developing his own style of martial art and building his philosophy whilst at the same time attempting to deal with his human flaws. He was clearly aware of and open about the emotional issues he has with his temper. Many angry people don't even get to this point. In many ways, he was a young man learning to become a whole man and aimed to become the best version of himself as he moved through a maturing life. I use the word "maturing" in recognition that Bruce felt that "maturity" would suggest an end to growth rather than continued development. Another aspect to think about around his temper particularly with people suggesting it became worse later on in his life is that the temper could be an indication of underlying brain injury or changes that led to the brain haemorrhage he experienced. Just like any head injury brain tumour, a persons underlying personality especially anger can become a core feature. I know Bruce did not have a tumour but he obviously had an increasingly worsening brain health that led to the haemorrhage. Have a restful Easter everyone.

There was a Bruce Lee magazine back in the late 70's I think it was called "His Privacy and Antidotes" There was a story about a sparring match he had on the set of "The Big Boss with a local Chinese guy who studied Thai Boxing and he and Bruce had a friendly match then they became fast friends afterwards ,Later Bruce talked this guy into introducing him to the Thai Boxing champion of that time who went by the nickname Perforating Hands and Unchallengeable Legs. Another great episode. Good point about the critique on the gossip/gong sao habit of many classical martial arts schools/tribes/assoc. Nowadays the training culture seems more liberal so people can train, share and cross reference to make personal experiences. Bruce Lee certainly was ahead of his time in that aspect. Agree also on your observation that Lee had a gap between theory and actual application of his theories and approach from a psychlogical point of view. Still amazing martial arts icon.

Ted Thomas (original name Ted Juson) was a British broadcast journalist and writer working in Hong Kong in the 1960s. He was on the sports and entertainment beat and interviewed the Beatles when they visited Hong Kong in June 1964. Later, Ted also started one of the first English film dubbing companies in Asia called Axis International. The company dubbed many of the Japanese Godzilla movies, as well as Mandarin and Cantonese films. Ted Thomas ended up doing a lot of the voices himself, and became known as 'Man of a thousand voices' throughout Asian cinema. Ted also originally dubbed Bruce's voice in Big Boss Fist of Fury and Way of the Dragon. This interview for Radio Hong Kong (now RTHK) took place in late 1971 (Nov or Dec) when Bruce first became a sensation and was doing press for Big Boss That's why it sounds so similar to the Pierre Berton interview using the same talking points. Ted did a total of 4 interviews with Bruce between 1971 and 1973, but this is the only interview that survived for some reason. Ted Thomas later appeared in several movies as an actor (under the name Theodore Thomas). I believe he is still alive, which would make him about 92 now.

Thank you for taking some ancient interviews! and bits, and pieces, and making them feel Brand New and relevant as if Bruce is still around. That’s fantastic. Rolling Stone magazine once did that with a John lennon interview from late 1980 right before he passed, That I had never read before, as he was talking about new wave music and punk rock and for a second I felt that he was still alive and they had his picture on the cover and it felt like it was totally new. It was issued in maybe 2011? If only you could find an undiscovered movie in the vault somewhere, they came close with the game of death, the lost footage. They should’ve waited and got the best producer and Director, And filled in the missing dialogue, instead of using subtitles that would’ve been a much better movie than the original game of death. Exactly, “styles” were at one point the idea and interpretations of what that person person learned. Many likely did not set out to create a system, per se. Great episode Sifu Alex. My thoughts: 1) Liked the insight on the idea of the "humble martial artist." There's nuance in that idea. The quiet martial artist isn't always the best. Sometimes it is the martial artist with the biggest mouth. It isn't bragging if you can back it up. Still, I side with those who are humble. Eventually, you'll get called out and can't back up the talk. I think of Connor McGregor who's lost his last few matches. 2) Good call on Chinese martial artists engaging in empty talk or spewing gossip to one another. I respect my sifu. He even told me to be open to other styles. But I winced when he'd talk ill about other sifus or lineages, whether in Hong Kong or Mainland. That evoked images of a bunch of old, out of shape Chinese men arguing over meaningless, outdated beef. As you mentioned, while they argue and gossip, other arts, like Karate, Muay Thai, or Jiujitsu get tested, get better, and become more popular. 3) Always wondered if the boasting/lying quote was true. Thank you for verifying it. 4) Shout out to Dre this episode! His story about the dog and the mushroom was one of the best "WTF" moments in the podcast, in a good way. Definitely gave me a nice chuckle. Thank you for another excellent episode!

Is it likely that Bruce Lee bought the significant amount of life insurance just before his death as a result of his own self-awareness? By that I mean, maybe he could see he was living fast: The (in no specific order)- drugs, physical training (in the heat), handling atleast 1 woman on the side, raising a family, little sleep, drinking and film making all at the same time. As Polly equated, he was like Charlie Sheen. Or maybe he had wanted to buy life insurance all along but just never had the money until ‘73?

Thank you, Kung Fu Genius…I can now die a happy man knowing where that random potato chip bag came from in Big Boss. As for Bruce’s teaching ability, Adam Chan has a good take on that: Martial artists can't be both great fighters and great teachers because of the time and effort required to excel as either one. Bruce was a fighter. Therefore, he focused more on bettering himself than he did his students. Now was he persuasive and inspirational? Absolutely. Could he break things down step by step and work patiently with everyone in class so they got it? Uhhh, not as much. That’s where someone like Inosanto, a certified school teacher, came in. It makes me think of my acting school where I worked with Paul Sills, one of the founders of Second City, the improv franchise a number of SCTV and old-school SNL cast members came from. Mr. Sills was the guru of improv comedy and philosophical like Bruce, if Bruce had been a blunt, abrasive, short-tempered New Yorker who yelled things like “Get out of your fucking head!” Which was easier said than done. And like many things he said, it was followed by, “But what do I know? I can’t teach you this shit.” Fortunately, Paul was replaced in the second year by a wonderfully patient and talented husband/wife team who actually COULD teach, and when he returned at year’s end to develop and direct a show with us, he went, “Hey…you guys are actually good now,” lol. Like Bruce, Paul was the finger pointing the way to the moon. Also like Bruce, he probably wasn’t the greatest at showing you how to get there, lol. Great segment.

A person who is a perfectionist or is a high level player/athlete has a drive to train and get better, the same way a good athlete who is a bit insecure and doesn't want to be beaten, so he trains incessantly. BL was probably a bit of both. A bit insecure especially after seeing how much bigger Americans were when he first got here, and the urge not to be embarrassed by losing due to not being prepared enough. It's a thin line between a great player/athlete and the obcessive-compulsive person.

Hey sifu Alex! I had a couple questions that I thought maybe you could talk about on KFG! I apologize if you’ve already answered them as I’m not caught up yet. I’m only on like, episode 5. But anyway: 1: are you ever going to write a book on how to run/start a school? I would like to get instructorship under my sifu and would eventually like to have a school/gym and I already have experience in coaching and teaching parkour, but I’m definitely not a qualified business owner or a well seasoned instructor. 2: Bruce Lee referred to some Kung fu artists as “bullshit artists”. But the fact remains that Yip Man wing chun flourished in Hong Kong. So my question is this: if Yip Man had fled to say, Thailand or somewhere else that had a denser population of presumably more hardcore street fighters, would it’s evolution be wildly different and what do you think that would like like? Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and please keep up the good work. Cheers!

Great questions. 1. There are many resources for Martial Arts school owners to learn how to improve the way they do business. I basically just took these things and applied it to my art. But I’m far from a guru in martial arts business. 2. The second question is a great one for the podcast. I’ll try to get to it in a future episode. But very short context is that the “bullshit artists“ that Bruce was referring to were people like Wong Jack Man and Lau Dai Chuen. He did not say that as a general comment on all Chinese martial arts practitioners.

@@TheKungFuGenius this is more of the age of MMA ...... so you have to admit - he might be the last of his kind, pure martial arts - all out combat - " street fighter' whatever name you want to give it... he did it. really do wish you do one with him as a must .thx

Without style, no form, without form, no foundation. When Bruce Lee say no style it’s not literal. Mr Lee glows of creativity, innovation, n visionary. Bruce Lee never claim he was the best instead he is the best version of himself. In reality, Bruce greatness only manifested when his acting skills n martial art skills r intricately woven on to the silver screen. So to those that say Bruce Lee was just a great fighter only or just a great actor only would not pass the eye test, needless to say is a idiot.

Sifu Alex I don't think Bruce a very good teacher, but, a great fighter. It's plain to C his home classes with James Cuban & the TV 📺 Long Street starring James Francisco . Bruce had Cuban do the laziness kicks any walking stick can ever do. In long street Bruce tried to teach a blind man 👨🦯, ( Francisco) how to kick like him. I 💙 Bruce & probably respect him like he's my father but, U can't teach a blind man to do with U can do
