The thing people forget about Bruce is he absorbed so many different things because he exposed himself to any art that came his way. Bruce was very lucky to have guys like Jesse Glover (Judo) and James Demille (Boxing/Street Fighting). Bruce was still a teenager when he met those 2 guys who were bigger and tougher than him. Not to mention training with Gene Lebell, Chuck Norris, Mike Stone, and Joe Lewis. Bruce had some tough and great martial artists that were his friends at different stages of life.

48:21 -- Yep, I had one of those super philosophical teachers. The problem was I watched him destroy some other teachers who tried to challenge him. I have a funny story I'm waiting to share about a Small Circle Jujitsu instructor who tried a bunch of pressure point nonsense and left the workshop with his tail tucked between his legs. Problem was my former teacher was just good enough to humiliate people who probably weren't good teachers themselves, but he either lost students who were tired of being confused, or kept students around who hoped to reach his level. I finally realized what was happening when another senior instructor corrected something via a 10-character text message that my teacher had spent 2 years trying to teach me.

I'm wondering if we can count Bruce Lee's acting in the episode "Love Chinese Style" from the TV comedy western "Here Come The Brides" as a "period" piece, since that is supposed to be the 1800's (and by coincidence, the setting was Seattle, Washington.) Granted, it was a TV show and not a movie (you were talking about his films), and the setting was a US territory as opposed to Imperial China, and Bruce did not wear the shaved head braided queue and was dressed in western clothing, but 1800's Seattle was contemporaneous with late Ching Dynasty China.😁

Oddly enough, while in Shenzhen in 2018 I made the acquaintance of an American guy who lives in the Philippines and when he found out I trained martial arts told me that Mike Stone was his neighbor. You’ve spoken a bit about using heavy bags for training, but I was wondering if you could give some specific ideas for how to incorporate heavy bag training into Wing Tsun training. Could you offer a few common drills? I’m most curious about how to properly train on the Muay Thai bag and the teardrop bag. I’d also love to hear your thoughts on when and when not to use gloves and or wrist wraps. Cheers!

Loving this!👍 I believe you know this already, but I'm going to yap away anyway "just because" (well mostly because there are new KZbin videos on other channels that promote the mythology that you rightly refute.) I believe the philosophical "it's not about fighting" publicity for traditional martial arts can be traced to the early 20th Century Tai Chi instructor Sun Lu Tang, who had a personal interest in Taoism, but who also had an agenda (along with the Central Guo Shu Institute) in making Chinese martial arts more palatable to the Chinese middle-class, who had associated the martial arts of China with street performers, professional soldiers and security firms, criminals(!), and "secret" societies, such as "The Boxers" (I won't pretend to render their actual name in Mandarin), all of whom were held in low regard to the Chinese middle-class. But by remarketing (and standardizing) Chinese martial arts, and mixing in philosophy, well, that's much more "acceptable."😁 I believe the Central Guo Shu Institute took inspiration in that regard from the "Budo" movement in Japan during The Meiji Restoration. It also explains why the so-called "18 weapons of Kung Fu." Obviously, from a historian's standpoint, China had way more weapons than just the official "18." And among those weapons invented by the Chinese were the very first firearms (but again, we can't say that guns were a martial arts weapon, even though "martial" means "military," hence "warfare," when we promote "spirituality," can we?) Again, digging your podcast and I'm sharing it👍

In my early days my friend had a "big screen" tv as we called them, and I would do exactly that against Segal and a few other DVD's. I had to be careful because "Go Forward" resulted in hitting the screen. The randomness of new video was great, as you mentioned, when UFC came around. Boxing was great, random, and free on cable. I also like to just imitate video as if it is my mirror, good video of the greats or my own Si-Fu and I try to copy exactly.

I’m thinking in the streets the fighting styles, martial arts or self defense that some say don’t work in real combat, I think do work against someone that is not a martial artist, or someone that has no experience in fighting or is not an aggressive fighter or if you can’t be aggressive, So if you can get aggressive if needed, if you’re attacker is not experienced in fighting or martial arts or just wants your money but not get in a fight or get hit, then karate, Taekwondo, Kung Fu or others can work, If the two opponents in a street are martial artists then you shouldn’t be fighting because you should try to avoid the fight and martial arts should teach you not to get in fights, But unfortunately ego and pride, misunderstandings or people with bad intentions are also learning martial arts

Great podcast Sifu Alex as usual. Every week I look forward to hearing what you have to say about WC and martial arts in general. I was born and raised in Red Bank NJ in the 70s and 80s and have been into Martial Arts since I was about 8. Long story short I always wanted to get into WC but couldn’t find a local school so I got into other styles. I attended Martins Karate Studio, Buddy Amatos Karate Academy (he claimed to teach kung fu and ninjutsu but that turned to be false). Never really felt comfortable in those styles so I started training with a couple of local kids who claimed they new Praying Mantis kung fu. Anyway…I am now 53 living in Florida and I want to get back into martial arts specifically WC but the closest school is an hr and a 1/2 away. I enrolled in a distant course with Sifu Sam Chan of the IWCMAA and now I have a few questions. How much of a difference is there between the WT lineage and Sifu Chan’s? The other question…is it possible to learn the system in a distant course and last why does WT have 116 wooden dummy moves while others have 108? Keep the information coming.
@TheKungFuGenius2 жыл бұрын
Great comment! Such a coincidence - I grew up in Lincroft and practiced Karate in Ref Bank! I also went to Martins Studio once for a seminar or belt promotion! My family used to eat at Hunan Mandarin right next door to an Amatos. What a small world! In general I don’t comment on other Wing Chun instructors, but usually there are differences across the various lineages.

You might have answered this question before, but I have to ask again: Despite his limited knowledge of Wing Chun and having no black belts, would you still consider Bruce Lee a Martial Arts Master and why?

Not to disparage a Black Belt ( it’s a great accomplishment when truly earned) but a black belt does not signify mastery ( hence 1st Dan). I have known plenty who really were not a master of any regard. Any black belt worth anything will tell you that it is the first step towards proficiency because you have learned enough fundamentals. You might gain a level of mastery but never fully. You never arrive. Lee never said he was a master. In the end, it comes down the person. If they train hard, they will be good regardless of belt. Most people I have know do not train that hard. I have been in multiple schools and have know martial artists. Lee obviously trained hard. There is not enough Hollywood magic to make anyone look that good.

Thinking & fighting like Bruce Lee isn't as easy as it seems. Even he had to learn from someone or somewhere. I believe Bruce required skills from other martial arts to compensate the Wing Chun studies he missed while here in THE USA 🇺🇸 ! If a novice doesn't have the knowledge to achieve better skills than the school he or she is part of it doesn't matter incomplete a fighter that is. Hello hello! My question is based off the knuckles we use in Wing Tsun, I’ve heard you mention we utilize the bottom 3 knuckles for the straight punch, why do other lineages only use 2? Or even in other martial arts like boxing where they try to utilize the top two. Thanks for reading!

Great question, I’ll get to it on a future episode. The quick answer is that it has more to do with your wrist alignment than the actual knuckles that you’re landing with. Check out Jack Dempsey‘s book “championship fighting“ for details.
