I think that if Austin was exactly that, and he was an instrument of destruction for Vince, but eventually Austin would grow completely out of control and then Vince would have to go crawling back to The Rock to save him and the WWF from the tyranny of Austin setting up a huge rematch from Wrestlemania X-7 at SummerSlam that same year, I think that could have worked.

Steve being a heel is what turned him babyface in the first place. He WAS a cold blooded rattlesnake, and the fans ate it up. It would have been easier to turn Ricky Steamboat heel in the 80s. The alignment with Vince failed not because it was comedic, but because Austin was a babyface trying to pretend him getting hate from the fans was even remotely possible.

@@masamune28954 anything he did to get heat would have been loved. If you thought fans cheered heels today it’s nothing like it was then. He got over as a face the more he acted like a heel. If they tried to be more creative with it it would have backfired further
