In the spring of 1978 I was a sophomore at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, majoring in graphic design, and a Bruce Springsteen fan since 1975’s “Born To Run,” when I heard a song on the radio (set to the Boston FM rock station, WBCN) in the RISD darkroom, where I was developing photographs, that stopped me in my stop bath. ⁠ It was merely the sound of its opening piano notes that froze me where I stood, an hypnotic, repetitive four-note hook that was as mesmerizing as it was distinctive, so immediately recognizable (to me, at least) as the unmistakable work of only one songwriter...do I have to say his name? Even the title of this incredible song had his name all over it: “Because The Night.” ⁠ Like the opening bass guitar chords of Bruce’s other great outtake from his 1978 masterpiece Darkness on the Edge of Town, “Fire,” the introductory piano of “Because the Night” is as memorable as anything Bruce has ever written, though unlike “Fire,” “Because” reached its zenith not in the demo version outtake given to Patti Smith lyrically unfinished, or in Smith’s own excellent Top 10 single (produced by Bruce’s sound engineer, Jimmy Iovine), but in Bruce’s incendiary Darkness tour performances--the most definitive being from THIS live radio broadcast from the Capitol Theater in Passaic, New Jersey on September 19, 1978. The guitar solo there ranks as one of Bruce’s greatest, the song perhaps his greatest love song: ⁠ “Because the night...belongs to lovers.”

I am blown away not just by Bruce’s intensity and guitar, which are at the Darkness peak, but the incredible tightness of the whole band and how everyone’s manic playing works perfectly together. The sum even greater than its parts.

Actually, you own something that is priceless. A video of Bruce Springsteen performing the greatest rock & roll that has ever been or ever will be. There are dozens of covers of Because the Night. Most people don't even know it's a Springsteen song. Every version is good because the song is so great it's hard to screw up. But before saying that any version is better than Bruce's own, which is certainly their right, they should see this.

@@frederickpando9444 I was at that show, mid way back at the Capitol, opening night. I think that's great then I hear people say they were there all 3 nights. WNEW FM announced out of the blue, tickets on sale now 4 or 5 places in the state, mostly small record stores, rushed to one and there were already 20 people in line. 2 ticket limit per person, cash only.

JIMMY IOVINE THE ENGINEER ON DARKNESS, WAS PRODUCING PATTI SMITH AT THE RECORD PLANT IN NYC 1977-78,AND PERSUADED BRUCE TO LET HIM HAVE BECAUSE THE NIGHT FOR HER ALBUM! WHAT A MISTAKE, WOULD HAVE FIT PERFECTLY AFTER CANDYS ROOM ON DARKNESS! BRUCE ALWAYS LEAVES HISBEST TRACKS IN THE CAN FOR SOME STRANGE REASON!
