Man, this song. Study the words. If they don't move you, you are dead. He wrote it after surfacing from the depths of depression after his marriage to Julianne Phillips went south. He obviously suffered, and came back from the depths, with the help of Patty Scialfa. This song is a testament to his soulful reflection upon this journey, and his gratitude for his good fortune of love, family and redemption. This a lesson for all of us. You cannot know heaven until you have to been to Hell.

I think Bruce Springotten litterally SAW GOD not unlike the america poet Allen Ginsberg. Bruce Springsteen's lyrics right here, this happened to me too,.. I would describe my revelation that led to my faith in God and then knowing God, with almost these exact words, and then later on, I literally saw God! "You shot through my anger and rage To show me my prison was just an open cage There were no keys no guards Oh, just one frightened man and some old shadows for bars" I had this album on my X-box for like ever now, and I can't believe these words were part of a Springsteen song! wow Living Proof - Bruce Springsteen Well now on a summer night, oh in a dusky room Come a little piece of the Lord's undying light Crying like he swallowed the fiery moon In his mother's arms it was all the beauty I could take Like the missing words to some prayer that I could never make Oh, in a world so hard and dirty so fouled and confused Searching for a little bit of God's mercy I found living proof Well, I put my heart and soul, babe, I put 'em high upon a shelf Right next to the faith, the faith that I'd lost in myself I went down into the desert city Just tryin' so hard to shed my skin I crawled deep into some kind of darkness Lookin' to burn out every trace of who I'd been You do some sad, sad things baby When it's your you 're tryin' to lose You do some sad and hurtful things I've seen living proof You shot through my anger and rage To show me my prison was just an open cage There were no keys no guards Oh, just one frightened man and some old shadows for bars Well now all that's sure on the boulevard Is that life is just a house of cards As fragile as each and every breath Of this boy sleepin' in our bed Tonight let's lie beneath the eaves, babe Just a close band of happy thieves And when that train comes we'll get on board And steal what we can from the treasures, treasures of the Lord It's been along long drought baby Tonight the rain's pourin' down on our roof Oh, looking for a little bit of God's mercy I found living proof Oh living proof I found living proof Yeah, living proof I found living proof Oh living proof I found living proof Oh Yeah I found living proof I found living proof I found living proof Oh

I have translated this anthem into Russian because I can't help but sing it with Bruce. 😊 He is so happy here. ❤ Enjoy!

This song works so much better when Bruce is backed by the E Steeet Band. I'm glad he kept it as part of his set when he and E Street Reunited. He should've re recorded this song with the E Street Band back when Claranece and Danny were still alive.

David. I disagree. A LOT is better with the E-Street band and the amazing wall of sound but Living Proof is better with the smaller, guitar focused band. The guitar tone that they achieve is what everyone here is commenting on. That tone meets the soul and is only achievable through twangy guitars expertly driven.
