Fortunately for Mr. Hornsby and the rest of us, he has in fact mellowed like a finely made violin. Richer, more vibrant and so uplifting. An American treasure.

Late summer, late 1980s. Driving south on Highway 95 from Coeur d’Alene to college in Moscow, Idaho, windows rolled down on my 1968 Firebird. The rolling hills of the Palouse with the not-yet-harvested wheat standing tall in the fields and “Look Out Any Window” blaring on the stereo - it was an utterly sublime experience. Thank you for that and the musical journey ever since!

I got to play a few songs with him on drums at the Holiday Inn Scope in Norfolk VA in 1978 when I hung out with his band at some local venues. I used to bring my Panasonic cassette player when I would go hear him locally so I have it on tape. It helps to be able to back up a story like that with proof. 😊 He is the real deal. The first time i heard him I thought if he didn't have success in the music business there was something seriously wrong with the music business.

I was about to see Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers play at the Neptune Festival in VA Beach but alas, the concert was canceled. The rain and storms during the day damaged the equipment. After being told the sad news I was walking away from the stage when suddenly a few members of the band came out of his tour bus! I couldn't believe it! They were just so chill and shared in our disappointment with us about the show. After a few exchanges and some laughs we continued walking back to our car. We made it only a few feet before Bruce Hornsby himself starts coming down the sidewalk! I didn't hesitate a second and immediately turned around to walk after him. As I got within earshot I called out to him. He turned around with a big smile on his face and greeted me. We fist bumped (I guess he doesn't do handshakes) and then talked for maybe 30 seconds. It was a brief interaction since he was in a hurry to get back to the bus and another lady shoved her way in to gush to him as well. Nevertheless, I was satisfied that night. I would've loved to hear his band play but meeting one of my idols certainly made up for it. Thank you Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers for being there for your fans despite a difficult situation. You tried your best to play for us that night and we appreciate that. Maybe next time.

Back in the 80s before The Way It Is, he entered a contest. I cannot remember the name of the contest but Kim Carnes won it the first year, and Hornsby won it the next year. It was a songwriting contest. I entered both years and of course, I lost, and found out just how good I was NOT! This guy is great. At the time, I had no idea what he sounded like, until the release of The Way It Is and I was completely humbled. Wonderful artist.

There are a few songs in modern popular music that have great intros and powerful "turn it up" qualities. Boston's "Long Time", Chuck Mangione's "Feels So Good" are a couple off the top of my head. The full orchestral arrival are goose bump inducing. This is one of those songs. I saw Bruce and The Range in Boise, Idaho in '88. The second album had just come out and they were touring. Such a great show.
