I've never been very close to Bruce Springsteen songs, but in 2019 I went through one of the worst years of my life. And one day KZbin recommended this song to me, and I had an epiphany, and ran after the rest of the album. And my god, that piece helped me through one of the worst years of my life. I got to know more of Bruce's work. And I want to say that Western Stars was a breath of fresh air for my soul, I thank the Boss, for this masterpiece. Thank you Bruce for everything. Now I'm going to listen to that beautiful song one more time.
@justanothersciencenerd69073 жыл бұрын
I think you'll find a lot of his fans who had similar epiphanies at one time or another, brought on by all sorts of life experiences. I know I did. Once I made that discovery, and explored more of his work, I was amazed at how absolutely accurate his writing is at capturing the sorrows, frustrations, and ultimately the dogged hope that somehow gets people through life. I don't consider him so much a songwriter as an actor who uses a pen.

What can you say when you are left speechless. I had “Western Stars” for almost 2 months before listening to it. I never had the right amount of time to give it my full attention, I guess. But the other day a had long drive ahead of me and thought it would help pass the time - keep me company. I had the destination set on the GPS, headed off, and then after I reached the highway and settled into traffic, I pressed “play”. Halfway into “Hitch Hikin’”, I pulled off the road, and onto the shoulder. Sat there listening to the album, start to finish, smiles crossing my face as easily as tears welled up in my eyes. After the last notes of “Moonlight Motel” faded, I pulled back onto the road, late for something that wasn’t nearly as important or satisfying. Thank you, Bruce, for a moving and empowering collection of stories. And thank you for the company.

'I wake up in the morning just glad my boots are on' sounds exactly like something my father would have said. He was a cowboy. As he got older and became ill, well... If his boots were on, it was a good day. Eventually, the cancer put him flat on his back. I spent his last weeks trying to make him comfortable and listening as he told stories of his horse trading, trick-riding days from his hospice bed in the living room. Now his boots are empty, the cowboy is gone, and I miss him. This whole song feels like an homage to him. And yes, it brings the tears, but that's okay. Because tonight, the western stars are shining bright again. Thank you for this moving masterpiece of a song and album, Bruce.

Bruce Springsteen to me is America's best poet laureate, story teller, musician and rocker. He speaks to us in the language of our hearts. This newest album is a prime example of what and who he is...The Boss! (I know he does not like being called that but he is the boss!) In the world we live in it is good to have things you count on. I count on Bruce to keep the narrative of our lives moving forward. Bruce does this in such a beautiful, emotional and intelligent way. I grew up with man. He has never let me down. Springsteen can bring tears to my eyes with his haunting telling of what happens in our inner soul. He speaks directly to that secret passion in me so often I know it is not a fluke. His music touches me personally and I struggle to explain the connection. It is not fair to say his music gets better with age because his past music holds up so well, so instead I will say the Boss abides and follows the path of lonely cowboys past their prime, teenagers growing up and anxious to get away from their hometown, wrecked and wretched wrestlers who have squandered their lives, AIDS victims that faced certain death, secret gardens of those struggling to still believe and keep faith, powerful passions that almost cannot be controlled, rebuilding a crumbled life, city or heart, the struggle to be good and do the right things, standing up against those in power, being afraid of finding love, being ready to find love and so many other themes. Every single one of them is meaningful to me. Every single one of them speaks to me. If he only created for me he would have done something special but I know many others have similar experiences with his music. There is both breadth and depth in his narratives I find so consistently in few others. Thank you Bruce Springsteen for reaching down deep and having the strength of character to try and tell the world what it is like to feel deeply and live with the repercussions of our emotions, decisions and lives! I know this may not make a lot sense but to a few romantics, cynics and humanist it will all make sense. Or something like that!

The emotional undercurrent in this song is undeniable, and it affects me deeply. Who else has been brought to tears here? What is it, though? Weariness?...resilience? Most of the time in this space, we reserve our analysis and praise for songs that have stood the test of time. But certain songwriters/performers have the ability to craft something that feels timeless the moment it is released. Bruce Springsteen is just such an artist, and “Moonlight Motel,” is just such a song. Springsteen recently called into E Street Radio, the Sirius/XM radio station in his honor, to talk about how his fans indirectly give him the freedom and inspiration to attempt stylistic detours like Western Stars. “We worked hard over the years and we have built an audience that really follows me where I need to go, and that is something that is so deeply appreciated by me that it’s really something I’m proud of,” Springsteen said. “They aren’t stuck in a rut. They don’t only want to hear specific group of songs. They are really adventurous.” Part of the fun in listening to Western Stars is playing a little game of Spot The Influence; there’s a little Glen Campbell here, some Roy Orbison there, etc. But “Moonlight Motel” doesn’t feel beholden to much of anything. Other than the wistful acoustic guitar licks, all other instruments are lowered in the mix to seem like ghostly echoes. That allows the somber story of the motel, which seems at times to be more metaphorical and mystical than physical, to really take hold. Springsteen immediately lets us know that this place is pretty much deserted these days, “the musty smell of wilted flowers” wafting through the air. “Now the pool’s filled with empty, eight foot deep/ Got dandelions growin’ up through the cracks on the concrete,” he sings. But the memories are far more alive than any of the place’s tangible accoutrements: “Your lipstick taste and your whispered secret I promised I’d never tell/ A half-drunk beer and your breath in my ear at the Moonlight Motel.” What the song suggests is that there a fragility to ideal romance that daily life eradicates, just like time and weather have done away with the luster of the motel; “Well then, it’s bills and kids and kids and bills,” Springsteen sings. Nobody has made more use of dreams in his songwriting than Bruce, which is why the hairs on your arms might stand up when you hear him launch into the final verse with “Last night I dreamed of you, my lover.” He doesn’t reveal the contents of this dream, but he wakes hearing the lingering voice of his former love saying, “Better to have loved,” the rest of the adage going unsaid perhaps because he didn’t hear it, perhaps because he heard it but finds it too painful to repeat. His only recourse is to go out on a drive looking for the motel, the chilly air and falling leaves signifying the end of the summer and the end of a dream too good to be true. “She was boarded up and gone like an old summer song/ Nothing but an empty shell,” he notices when he arrives. Nothing else to do but: “I pulled a bottle of Jack out of the paper bag/ Poured one for me and one for you as well/ Then it was one more shot poured out onto the parking lot of the Moonlight Motel.” Bruce Springsteen’s catalog is so imposing that it feels almost blasphemous to suggest that a song he just wrote and recorded deserves a place among his best. And yet how else can you characterize “Moonlight Motel,” a song that doesn’t so much jerk tears as it does gently loose them as a courtesy to the listener? Instant classic sounds about right.

If I were to have a funeral (which I won't), I would like it to be nothing more than an open bar and the playing of this entire album. (Not for nothing, but I was listening to Bruce in Gainesville on an "underground" radio station in the '70s; who knew how much he would mean to me--and the world--over the years.)

Sitting here in the bar that I am in, this song is a testament to life. I can't believe that I can even comprehend this from an artist as clear and concise as Springsteen, what is wrong with me?

My dude, good american song writer. Makes you proud you grew up here, even coming from a African American male who has seen two sides of America, but I love her, and her values of liberty, and justice, for all. It moves my spirit. Which tells me it is truth. I grew up in the racists 80's, and I experience love from a good amount of my Caucasian brothers and sisters. I've had beautiful childhood friends, that help me to see that people, all people have the capacity to love, and then I grew up and found out that, all people have the capacity to hate also. Doesn't matter what you look like on the outside, but it does matter what you look like on the inside. One Love

Has Springsteen ever made a bad record? Every album blows me away. The production on this album stirs up this sensation of melancholy and beauty. It's as if The Boss has never felt more down and out yet at the same time never more free in his life. Astounding. 🤠🌟🇺🇲

@@malcolmf1381 Malcolm,,let me ask you,,I'm gonna go back a bit though. The string sections and horn sections on a lot of the stuff that Motown released back in the 60s,,you have any affinity for some of that Motown Sound? Just curious. My commenting on Springsteens latest release is,,a couple of things,,i,'ve been listening to the Boss since the late 70s, a young Bruce was a force of nature,,power,,drive,,passion. I believe he's nearing 70 years old,,,I for one appreciate the fact that he possesses a rare talent in songwriting,,,and he has the character to grow old with some grace,,,man if he was out there today trying to be that younger version of himself,,,like so many before him have,,,a parody really,,,I couldn't watch,,,,,,it be like Bob Dylan as a judge on the Voice.
@malcolmf13815 жыл бұрын
@@manage7383 ,Thanks for your comment. I am 75 and loved r and r as a teenager particularly Buddy.I dreaded where he was going even before he died as I felt strings etc were very Sinatra-ish. When R and R finished about 1960 I went back to Hank Williams and Johhny Cash and bluegrass. From that it is no surprise that I was not a Motown fan nor a fan of heavy metal techno dance hip hop rap etc,but would never criticise those who like it. My fave Bruce albums are Nebraska and Ghost of Tom Joad. All you need to know really.

Western Stars, the song and album are a Masterpiece. Amazing how Springsteen, like many of the best of his contemporaries, captures Americana, from the Jersey Shore to the Southwest and "here in the canyons above Sunset..." And he incorporates so many decades and styles of music into this album, it's epic. As a teen in the 80s, I liked his popular songs, but I appreciate the deeper meaning and resonance in his lyrics and music throughout the years so much more now. Thanks, Bruce, "shining bright again".
