Hi Bruce, congratulations on your Scania 144-530. I have had several of them when they were new, the one you have there is the first model 144, you can see it on the front grill, it is not the same as the red one you have, it is with it (new muzzle), in a Scania 530 V8 you don't have to use all the gears, empty tractor you can start in 1 high and high split and switch to 3 high low split and then in high split, then you will find that it starts howling and out of the exhaust pipe, when you skid gear, when you can make it howl when you change gear you can drive Scania 530 V8, you can try searching here for Scania 144 530 v8 straight tube, then you will see and hear how a 530er should sound when can drive in them. you can check the serial style number on the left door, it's the long number you need to look at, it should say 530 or 460 in the middle of the number, you can see how many horses it has 530 hp or 460 if it's a 460 hp it doesn't howl when you change gear as it runs with a different turbo. so good luck with it and see if you can get it to howl when you shift gears.👍

Hopefully it'll be a fun trip and you can get parts. Yea, in Europe idling for long periods of time is banned in many places so the trucks usually have a separate heater.

A neat feature of the Scania you have, (i am an old Scania/Volvo/MAN driver from Denmark/Norway), is that when you get in you can leave your shoes on the steps, and when you close the door the way the door is made your shoes are secure on the steps. Like leaving your shoes on the porch when you walk into your house. I saw a guy who had run his AC/heater vent down there so you could have nice warm/dry shoes to step into when you get out of your truck to do loading whatever. A "fun" detail here is that the MAN trucks don't cover the bottom step, so if you are used to driving Scania and swap to a MAN you loose the shoe on the bottom step.....

Hey man! Getting stressed out about your shifting 😅 you don´t have to start on C all the time, that´s only for when you pull heavy loads, or start in a steep hill or stuff like that. Now, when your split is functional, start on 1H, skip to 3L and then go to 4 L/H and then up. Or, you can start on 2L and jump to 4L if you want to rev it a bit more on the low gears. And, you don´t need to slip the clutch when starting, just release the clutch slowly and let the tourqe do the job. And also, go slow when shifting. Wait 1 sec in neutral between the gears and you won´t bust those sync.rings. Optimal shifting range is about 1400-1700rpm. Keep up the good work! looking forward to see what you get up to with that old bad boy!

You want to keep or return the under hood appearance of it, I would suggest you get a product called Gibbs. You spray everything under the cab, preferably while the engine is running and you soak it down and you let it sit a couple of days and you spray it off. The accoutrements will look considerably better. Salt also will not cut through gibbs, but Gibbs cannot cut salt so you have to make sure everything is clean before you apply it. You can apply it to every square inch of the framework. Will soak into a millionth of an inch. And you can also wipe it with a rag and spray paint over it and the paint will stick. But I once owned a Dodge Caravan and I sold it with 254000 Mi on it and I would do that once a year just to treat the engine. Before I sold it I sprayed it off it looked like the vehicle was less than a week old under the hood. And I bought it with 46,000 Mi on it. It is a great tool for keeping the vehicle looking nice especially in those nether regions underneath it and under the hood. It also keeps all of the rubber from deteriorating quite a bit. On my caravan, my son had borrowed it to go to school in texas, and he changed the original plug wires at 241 thousand miles, along with the original radiator hoses because he had to replace the radiator. Now it could have been that it was originally an FBI package vehicle. It was a vehicle that was specifically made for the federal Marshal Service the DEA and the FBI in 1998. The first 200 of them made in the 1998 model year. It even had a custom paint color on it that only was on Chrysler products, not dodges. But it also allowed me to know when I was near any federal agents for several years. I also was able to get quite decent fuel mileage out of it I was able to get about 31 1/2 Mi to gallon out of it and it would run along at 130 mph all day long comfortable as could be and that wasn't topped out and still getting 20 miles a gallon. That was on a trip back up in 2003 from my mother's funeral in South Carolina back up to the Detroit area. I went through West Virginia at an average speed of 118 mph. I did slow down when I got into Ohio though. Another thing you can do, is any rubber that you add to the truck or even some of it is still on the truck that looks serviceable, clean it up and spray it down fairly wet with 303 protectant and let it soak for about 12 hours. Put it on all of the Rubber products even the serpentine belts, you can even put it on the Treads of the tires about every 3 to 4 months, and get twice to as much as three times the mileage out of the tires. It's one of the best products you can buy off the shelf bar none. You might want to even get a couple of gallons of it and put it in a spray bottle.

The gray Deutsch plug at 22:33 for the aircon should have a neoprene gasket and an insert to lock the contacts in place. I'm guessing moisture got in at some point and caused problems, quite common for Deutsch connectors.

Hi bruce im a euro truck driver from belgium, i drive a next gen scania 530 s v8, when nothing attached you can leave in 2nd gear and go straight to 4th and then high gear than 6th and so on. We use only first gear when you are fully loaded even then it choses 2nd gear most of the time. With the new trucks you can even start in 5th gear

@ajidamarjati

With 25 years import rule, it's hard to get a nicer truck though. The youngest Scania 4 Series rolled out the production line in 2004, it has 16 liter V8 instead of the older 14 liter V8, have power output up to 580 hp & 2700 nm of torque (almost 2050 ft lb). But that truck would be too young to be imported to the US.

Here in Sweden lot's of the show trucks have beutiful airbrushed paintworks on the cab. I think you should comission a piece with the theme of Swedish setlers coming to the US in the 1800:s. Swedish and American flag, American eagle and all that. Considering this is just one of many Swedes making the journey to America. A bit of sweden is in the US legacy.

You should make a giant Swiss Army knife to lay on the trailer and a big pan of Swedish meatballs with IKEA down the side of the pan. Maybe some kind of snap together finiture. You could have some fun with it.

Im unsure, what type of trailer-hitch you have in the U.S so i dont know, if its the same that you can use on the european trailerhitch. unless you're gonna change it. But.. theres a saying here in nordics, the older the truck is the more pain it can be but you can do more by yourself, then you can on the newer ones due too the all electrics on the truck. So i do hope everythings goes well for you. Make us proud :)

Where the Scania logo is in the front, thats a hatch you can open by pulling it towards you and down. When the big front hatch i closed so you easier can fill coolant.

"Sentral smøring" the grease system , you can fill it with an old fashion grease pump or gun or what you call it. Make sure to power wash the whole engine before dismantling. but where is the paper in the "syclone filter" or sentrifuge filter ? Back in the day it was a paper in it so you could pull all the slugde in one pull. Man this video brings me back to my mechanic days . Nice video guys

Scania also makes amarican style trucks that drive around in europe, but they are rare. It is wierd if you are not used to shift with the clutch that it does not have a cluth activation button on the shifter. Most of the manual ones i have been in have that option. That are the normal road versions of these stile of trucks, they sit pretty low compaired to the stuff that speced from factory to go offroad.

Be aware the liners tend to move around in the block a common problem with single head engines, you can get over size liners. But they do leak coolant when the liner moves around and breaks the top liner oring....

29:00 - Just the look from this angle, it looks so much more comfortable and ergonomic than most trucks. Everything is in easy reach, views out the window look like they’d be good as well… to me this appears like it would have the feel you’d get from driving a car - I mean just from the drivers seat to how you interact with it. I’m NOT a semi-truck driver at all, but it’s always seemed like you had to reach far for most things in a big rig. I’m probably not exploring this right, but hopefully some will understand what I mean. And unless you’ve got some great sound deadening mic’s, it sounds super quiet while driving, yes??
