Six years later: this is still one of the very best live performances I know. I can't decide whether the final descending figure is best taken istesso tempo (as Runnicles does here, and notably Scrowaczewski does too), or slower, maybe mustering more finality. I once saw the score and it's ambiguous (to me anyway). Right now, I'm ecstatic about the whole thing!

As a Scot, living in Aberdeen, I've seen this orchestra a dozen times and was astonished they were going to attempt this Bruckner. I was so proud of them as I watched it on tv. They made a splendid go of it. Not so lush as my favourite interpretations and whipped along at perhaps too quick a tempo BUT really a very good performance.

The dotted rhythm of the strings in the finale is what gives the impression of the tempo rather than the huge columns of harmonic resonance from the brass in particular. Its a musical device that Bruckner used often. His finales are particularly enigmatic and hard to "pull off" in performance compared to other movements. Rarely can any conductor get a whole Bruckner symphony "right" either. Donald Runnicles comes mighty close - Bravo!!

When I read some of the comments here I was left wondering just what sort of crazy performance this might be... I listened anyway. I will listen again. Too fast? Even at the extreme, not as excessive as Celibidache is slow. The contrast between III and IV I find really exhilarating. It all hangs together pretty well in my opinion, and the orchestra does more than justice to the score. Nine horns, four Wagner tubas, three harps - what a sound! Thanks for posting this heroic performance of such a monumentally deep and satisfying work.
@Arglarglarg
@Arglarglarg 6 жыл бұрын
Being a Celibidache lover I find this too fast ... particularly the part before the very end ( 1:15:00 you can't even understand what trumpets are doing ), it sounds like a fanfare from a little village to me ... and what's the point to rush this part so much that you have to put an enormous rallentendo 5 bars after ... It's only my opinion after all but all tempi are subjective :) Ha and there isn't 9 horns + 4 tuben, the last 4 horns must play both instruments during the piece

The approx. 2 min at about 53 is probably the best use of Wagner's "Tuben in F." The 4 horn players are in excellent sync. The lower harmonies they project are awesome to me. Trombones and/or Fr, horns just wouldn't cut it.

Wonderful, especially the last movement. Mo. Runnicles conducts Bruckner's last Finale with a great sense of pacing--learned from his many performances of Wagner's Ring. The tempos never sag, but there is plenty of breathing room so that it does not feel rushed. The big moments arrive with a sense of inevitability and the ending is crisp, unifying the dotted rhythms from the first movement. You can't hear a Symphony in C minor that ends in C major without thinking of Beethoven's 5th. Bruckner references the previous movements in the finale like Beethoven, but he delays the conflict resolution until very near the end--more Romantic and very satisfying. An exhilerating performance!

I appreciate all the comments. I love classical music but am not schooled in it and was not even aware of Bruckner until he was in a package I bought through Seattle Symphony. I will get the opportunity to hear Bruckner's Fifth Symphony on April 22 at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, conducted by Ludovic Morlot. Our symphony is highly ranked now, winning a couple Grammys in the last few years, so I am anxious to hear and hope the performance turns up on KZbin some day so I could get such insightful and knowledgeable I see here.

The length of Bruckner's Fifth Symphony will test your patience but its Finale, a joyful blast, is worth waiting for and its second theme has the same distinctive rhythm as "Tiptoe Through the Tulips." Consider keeping in mind Gustav Mahler's description of Anton Bruckner: "Half-simpleton - half-God."
@anniedog34

Your comment took me to discovering an essay written in 1940 about these two composers. This excerpt might be one observation to understanding Mahler's description; regarding Bruckner: "Unless music was the topic he turned his conversation to the narrow vicissitudes and happenings of everyday existence. Nevertheless his personality must have been attractive, for almost all reports agree upon the peculiar fascination exerted by his naivete, piety, homely simplicity, and modesty, bordering at times on servility, as borne out by many of his letters. I explain this attractive power of his strange personality to myself as due to the radiance of his lofty, godly soul, the splendor of his musical genius glimmering through his unpretending homeliness. If his presence could hardly be felt as "interesting", it was heartwarming, yes, uplifting."

Yes, it seems the more one studies a composer's personality, the better one can appreciate their music. Bruckner was originally an excellent organist with a gift for improvisation. He transferred the tricks of his early trade to his symphonies: (1) Grand orchestral octave unisons resembling fortissimo organ pedal solos; (2) changing one group of orchestral color to another, for example, woodwinds to strings, resembling how an organist will change from one manual to another; (3) intuitive rather than logical development in his orchestral movements, similar to how an organist will freely improvise on the spot by quickly using the power of his imagination. Hence the description of his symphonies as "cathedrals in sound." Also, anniedog34, Bruckner had a loyal pug dog named Mops.
@anniedog34
@anniedog34 7 жыл бұрын
Might I bother with one more question? Would his improvising give his work an elusive quality that makes it a challenge for an orchestra and conductor? So many comments I have read refer to a conductor's ability to "get it right", when getting it right would have to have a measure of Bruckner's mind, so to speak. I realize the question itself is a little elusive! And I had a loyal Scottie named Annie.

Just now I came across this concert.... What a fantastic performance! Great tempi and natural flow. Can you imagine Runnicles 'doing' this symphony in the 1887 version? And the 3rd and 4th in their 1873 and 1874 version? And Bruckner 9 with Sébastian Letocart's completion? And this orchestra....!

Several folks have mentioned that they didn't like his tempos. I personally disagree. The tempos (in both the Nowak and Haas editions) are clearly indicated to be quicker than most conductors take them. I think there's great beauty in his 'faster' (yet, I believe to be intended by Bruckner) tempos.

People talk about the 3 Bs- Bach, Beethoven, Brahms- but I believe that it should be 4. Bruckner was a genius and it shows in his work. Besides, he probably had the hardest road to fame out of all of them. Every single symphony of his was severely criticized, and yet he kept going to make these amazing pieces that wouldn't have existed without him. I feel that he and Shostakovich really deserve hall of fame spots. E: I just noticed... 58:13 is that a 6 valve horn? WTF? E2: 1:14:40 why in the hell does he need three spit valves?

Are you referring to the Wagner tuben? An invention of Wagner himself for use in the Ring, essentially an intermediary between the trombone and French horn. Other than the Ring, they didn't really see widespread use outside of Bruckner and a few other pieces like The Rite.

It seems, judging by some of the comments, that not a lot of people understand the role of the Conductor. Look it up in Wikipedia. What you are hearing is his/her REHEARSED interpretation. A conductor might spend weeks rehearsing a piece. His job, on the performance day, is just to make sure the performers stick to the agreed rendition (his rendition, by the way).

The Wagner Tubas!.. the players sit behind the french horns..Everyone is aware of Bruckner's love of Wagner. In the awesome Adagio, he uses the Wagner Tubas to great effect. At 36:19 they are featured, as well as 43:25 (nice camera work to direct our attention). Then, in the absolutely wonderful Coda, which starts at 51:17, which the late conductor Georg Tintner called "one of the greatest inspirations in music"(I totally agree), enter first the four french horns at 51:42 (no Tubas yet). At 52:28 notice the tuba players getting ready... They come in at around 52:48, playing the low notes along with the horns.. then, at 53:54 the horns put down their instruments, then from there to the end of the movement, it is just the Wagner Tubas with the awesome string accompaniment to close it out. Fantastic!

There's no point in trying to compare Bruckner and Mahler. They were doing different things. Whereas Bruckner was trying to express his spiritual yearnings, Mahler was searching for the means to express the feelings of the individual struggling to come to terms with the difficulties of living. Bruckner was a 19th century artist, Mahler an artist of the 20th century. When Schoenberg, Berg and Webern started on their journey towards the modern world, it was Mahler's example they followed, not Bruckner's.
@socraticgadfly

And, they had totally different conceptions on how to use the orchestra. In my opinion, one must see Bruckner as like an organist, using things like the crescendo pedal and instruments as like banks of organ stops.

Unfortunately you are totally wrong about Bruckner. Anton's 9th symphony adagio is far away in the XXth century than Mahler's one. And why will we say about the finale ? Bruckner began breaking tonal world in his... 1st symphony ! (Slow mvmt) that Mahler never did. And yes, Schoenberg did obviously work with echoes of Bruckner's last works sounding in his ears, but he did so with Brahms' too...

'why is the crowd at the RAH always immediately so LOUD?' In this case, probably because Bruckner's music attracts people who are overly excited by loud noise, rather than propriety to context.

This is fandamtastic ---and didn't know this conductor --- Eugen Jochum or Nezet-Seguin were 2 of my 3 favs . And I agree about the adagio ... if 2nd to anything only adagio of Beethoven 9 . Also agree kick out Brahms, insert Bruckner...too bad he's Austrian, not German :)

5:26 - "cough cough..." "Oh, I did it, I made a noise. And it was excused!" Next Person: "Oh shit, I wanna cough too." 'cough, cough' Thus it spreads... "Oh, I'll just make myself known by pretending not to be noticed!"

Probably related to the woman who sat behind me at Snape Matings last weekend for the Vivaldi Gloria. She 'needed' to take a sip of water every five minutes. Had she brought one of those bottled with the seated cap that you can just leave and suck from? Did she just leave the bottle open between uses? Oh no. She'd brought a bottle with a metal screw cap that clanked every time she resealed the bottle (which she did every time). Ignorant moron.

Belle éxécution, même si les grupetti y sont un peu précipités. Il est seulement dommage qu'ait été retenue la version Nowak, notoirement défectueuse pour cette symphonie (pour des coupures injustifiables, notamment).

Celibidache is overrated. He kills the excitement with incredibly slow tempos. I think the last chords in this interpretation were explicitly great. Celibidache breaks the tension by conducting the last notes too slowly. This is the best ending I've heard so far.

Runnicles has clearly thought through what he wants in this symphony, and his conception is completely consistent. He wants to keep it moving at all times, with no relaxing and very little rubato. So he avoids both heaviness and dragging. But I get a feeling of impatience throughout this performance that just doesn't feel right for the music. To me, it doesn't breathe, and feels pushed.

The Adagio movement is surely one of the grandest moments of Western Civilization. The horns (Wagner's "Tuben in F") are spine tingling for several minutes at the end of the Adagio. I know Mahler used these horns too, but not like this display.

One more little note. I believe someone else called our attention to Bruckner's use of dotted quarter notes. I don't know what is so special about them--meuically speaking--but the effect on the listeners' appreciation and the deep impact is inestimable. It never seems to grow boring. 12-12-2022.

the audience were excited enougth to cheer and applaud at the end of this work. one thing they were not was so awed as to be knocked into a stunned silence having somehow tasted the overwhelming, holy presence of God Almighty Himself. they did not understand this symphony at all. none of them, IMO
